@@jerodast In the beginning of the commentary, it's briefly acknowledged that he's RDJ but he stays in the black guy persona for most of it. He still refers to Ben Stiller and Jack Black by their real names. So, actually plays Kirk Lazarus who critiques his own work as Osiris while still in-character while he still knows he's RDJ. And when the character goes back to Australian, RDJ switches to that, and then he goes to full RDJ near the end. Layers upon layers.

I consider this up there with Blazing Saddles as one of the all time great Parody/satire films. Blazing Saddles critiqued and shed a light on the Racism of old West and distinct lack of Black Cowboys despite history showing that black people were a major part of the old west. While Tropic Thunder Criticized the Hollywood industry on nearly every level. As a black person,I never want to hear about RDJ having to apologize for this role. Any smart black person with a sense of humor sees what his role is Satirizing in Hollywood today with how they go about casting race and the glory seeking Pretentious Actors trying to win awards all the time. Tugg Speedman is the Arnolds/Stallone of the industry. Let me tell you when me and my brothers watched this for the first time we hadn't seen a trailer for it/or a single ad outside of a poster of it at our local Theater. When we saw the booty sweat ad and the following commercials we immediately knew we were in for something good. This might be Tom Cruise's most underrated role. Despite how goofy Les grossman is as a character,the fact is he is the Bob Iger/Kevin Fieges/ the Producers of the Industry who oversee all the money and rewards of these films when they get made. And word is Tom is planning on doing a Les Grossman Spin off film.

"... distint lack of Black Cowboys despite history showing that black people were a major part of the old west." When it is said with genuine truth in a genuine context warranting it, no issue. But when it's slathered in disingenuous revisionism, that's when we dive into the cesspool of ESG/DEI cultist crap. The Old West? It's a tale of white folks bulldozing over Natives. All that revisionism about the "major role" of Chinese, Spanish, or other ethnicities having entertaining and inspiring tall tale to tell? Spare me. They were about as significant as a speck of dust on a horse's ass. Yeah, sure, there are a few scattered tales and they are worth telling - ought to be told, but don't stretch it to claim they were 'major' part of the Wild West. They were side acts at best, not the headline. Trying to cram them into the spotlight just to meet some diversity checklist? Ridiculous. They were there, but 99% of the time, they were background noise, not the main event. And guess what, Wild West movies, the ones that are loved and that are the most entertaining, are the ones involving Cowboys duels, gang wars, Natives vs White Skins, legendary quick-draws, because these are the predominant and most notorious narratives and reality of these times. And it will never change. Because history, real history, is set. For eternity.

@@JustChillin740 It's part of KZbin's comment formatting system. If you bookend a word or sentence with underscores, you get italics. If you do the same with asterisks, you get bold. If you wrap the words with both asterisks and underscores, you get bold italics. It's a little sensitive to adjacent characters, like it breaks if you put a period on the outside, touching either an underscore or asterisk, so you may have to go back and edit your comment to move the period to inside of the special characters to make the formatting look right, but play around with it and see how it works for you.

Method Actor Fact: When recording the audio commentary for the Unrated DVD and Blu-ray, Robert Downey, Jr. actually spends the entire commentary as the character that appears on the screen as the movie progresses. Historical Fact: The South East Asian gang Flaming Dragon, led by a pre-teen boy, was modeled after God's Army, a guerrilla army in Myanmar. The group was led by twin brothers Johnny Htoo and Luther Htoo, who were nine years old when it was founded in 1997. BTW the RDJ line "I don't drop character until I do the DVD commentary" which was a ad-lib by him... if you listen to the DVD commentary with him, Jack Black and Ben Stiller... well he showed up to the studio IN CHARACTER and did the ENTIRE thing in character. It's amazing and Black and Stiller had no idea he would do it and even at first thought he'd drop character, but he did not! LOL

I'm enjoying the fact that there are still people who appreciate irony. Tropic Thunder and Blazing Saddles are up there with Life of Brian. I like how Ricky Gervais said it "Irony is laughing at the 'wrong' thing because you know what the 'right' thing is".

If you ask me this is without a doubt one of the greatest comedies ever made. Probably the funniest and most rewatchable movie I've ever seen. There is so much I love about this movie but one of the things I find most remarkable about it is the performances of Tom Cruise and (obviously) Robert Downey Jr. Everybody who has seen the movie will tell you how hilarious both Tom Cruise and especially Robert Downey Jr were but I don't think that fully does it justice. You have 2 actors who are highly renowned and respected/lauded for being among the best DRAMATIC actors of their generation (I've always considered Tom Cruise extremely overrated and a relatively shitty actor but thats besides the point) but in my opinion they both give the greatest performance of their careers in Tropic Thunder. Critics and the film industry as a whole have never taken comedic performances or comedies in general seriously so you more than likely won't hear many people saying/agreeing with this but I genuinely believe they've never given a better performance. I certainly understand if you disagree but if you find my assertion inherently ridiculous or impossible because of the genre then I urge you to try your best to question that bias and look at it more objectively. I've always tried to fight it and remain hopeful that things might change but due to the film industrys long held biases towards comedic performances and the genre as a whole unfortunately some of the greatest movies and performances of all time have never received the respect, recognition, or level of prestige they actually deserve. Tropic Thunder and especially those 2 performances are among the best examples/evidence that prove this to be the case... I think I'll watch it again tonight with someone new actually and its a guarantee that I will still greatly enjoy it. Lol Now I'm excited its crazy how much replay value this movie has.

"That's a bit over the top" - Uhhh - you could say that statement throughout everyone scene in the movie and it would be accurate. This movie dialed up satire as high as possible while keeping the audience still connected. That's absolutely amazing and it makes a truly outrageously entertaining movie. The running gags throughout the movie, cinematography like when Nick Nolte is next to the window blinds in the all-hands meeting, blowing up the director, Flaming Dragon and their love of Simple Jack, RDJ refusing to drop character (even in the DVD/Blur-Ray commentary), the bogus trailers at the beginning of the movie, often overlooked lines like "Tropic Thunder: kind of like my Catcher in the Rye", etc. You just can't stop this movie. I must have seen this movie 30 times now... I think people either like Jack Black and his comedic style or don't and that has a big impact on how they view his role and performance in this movie as well. I'm not a big Jack Black fan and I would have preferred someone else in the role (can you imagine if Chris Farley was still alive and had been cast when this was made?).

I have a theory that the whole full rtard bit was a subtle shot at Leo. If you've seen What's Eating Gilbert Grape and you know his history with the Academy, you'll get it. It's very funny regardless of who finds it offensive, but I think it's even funnier to me than it is to most people.
@jerodast
@jerodast Жыл бұрын
Oh man I forgot about that. The thing is all the reviews I read about _WEGG_ talk about Leo doing a great job. I think more of _I Am Sam_ as just a recent movie shortly before _Tropic Thunder_ that just nobody had any respect for.

@christopherschreiber5805
@christopherschreiber5805 Жыл бұрын
The full rtard theory had already been well established in Hollywood. Sean Penn is a fantastic actor, but too well known to do that without it coming off as extremely offensive. A lot of people think Leo tried to sidestep that bc it was his breakout role, and the Academy has been making him pay for it ever since. Personally, I think he maybe got a little bit lost in the method lol. But he was amazing in Gilbert Grape. The only time I've ever been really blown away by him tbh.

It's one of those movies that gets funnier the more times you see it. And the stuff behind the scenes makes it even that much better. RDJ was still Hollywood's black sheep when they made this - and at the same time, a little indie movie called "Ironman" (I can't remember which was first). And he absolutely killed both roles. Probably shoulda got an award for both, but the academy and Film Actors Guild only like movies you can't understand or that make you feel like shit...
