One of the oddest attempted whistle exchanges ever heard between the ship Niagara and the Aerial Lift Bridge in Duluth, MN. The ship produced a single whistle blast and then everything went silent.

One time in Seattle a Russian ship was coming in. A crowd of us were watching down on the waterfront. As the ship went by we saw their sailors all standing at attention on deck, saluting us as they went by. That was one of those golden moments. 👍👍

One Prolonged Blast - This means you are leaving a dock or departing your slip. It signals to others a change in status and that you are getting underway. A prolonged blast is also sounded when a vessel is approaching a bend in a river where vessels coming from another direction cannot be seen. It is sometimes referred to as the “blind bend signal". Interesting

@@vibewithmike Geez, maybe the Captain thought it appropriate to sound the one prolonged blast as there is an upcoming bend to the left. Typically you don't hear this type of signal in Duluth in that situation, but then maybe it was a newer Captain that just wanted to 'go by the book' and be extra cautious.

Really interesting to see the hillsides of Duluth from my vantage point in Tucson. I've only ever been there in the summer. It looks chilly & hunkered down. Nice closeups of the Niagara & easygoing narration. Wow, the Missouri, almost 100 years old. Truly was a fun video.

Great job Mike. A really nice high quality, high resolution video. If you go to 9:53, you'll see where the tug Missouri had recently made a rare afternoon trip up to Two Harbors. I watched that live. Apparently the tug was needed to assist a vessel having engine troubles. Luckily those issues were quickly resolved, so only a short pull was needed from the dock to just outside the harbor. The Missouri then quickly returned to Duluth. That was a strange blast in that situation. One prolonged blast is a warning signal. Sometimes used when coming up on a blind turn. 5 short blasts would have been a more urgent warning.

@@vibewithmike One of the Vanenkevort vessels was having engine issues...which got resolved. The Vanenkevort ship then went about their planned route and the Missouri just headed back to Duluth.

Hello Mike. The Missouri tug is such a hard working vessel. Chip has to be commended for all he does to keep the canal open for all the Lakers. The Niagara is a good looking vessel as well. I went on a google to see if all large Great Lakes freighters had bow and/or stern thrusters. Didn't find that (anyone know?) but I did find that there is a brand new freighter on the lakes. The Mark W Barker. Wonder if it has made Duluth yet?

Sanker, the Mark W. Barker is an awesome ship. I did catch her on a livestream last year. The quality is not the best because KZbin only allows 720 resolution with livestreams.
