For anyone who cares about the story, you are the botanist and the other guy is the scientist of a five man expedition. All the notes are from various members, mostly the scientist, and detail the expedition. After eating the somewhat hallucinogenic mushrooms while tracking a deer, the scientist’s mental state deteriorates quickly and he believes the mushrooms help guide him from being trapped forever in the permafrost, which is why he has them being distilled. This is the liquid in his canteen. The scientist believes you were all trapped in the permafrost and to be allowed to go free he needs to murder the other three expedition members before sacrificing you in the cave. The game starts after he has already killed the other members and details your seemingly unwitting journey to the cave as he guides you there. He forces you into the cave and has you eat the mushrooms before leaving without, thinking he’ll be free. The scientist doesn’t know how to mush (lead sled dogs) so he crashes. You manage to escape the cave and find the crash site where you gather the scattered dogs and flip the sled, all the while he is trying to kill you as he believes he won’t be able to escape otherwise. The final fight takes place between you and the scientist as he refuses to stand down and to let you leave alive. After you manage to kill him you strap his body to the sled and the game ends. The two bodies found in one of the cabins are of expedition members who the scientist killed. There are three hidden signposts throughout the game tied to an achievement. The scientist doesn’t want to be near these signposts so it can be interpreted that these “signposts” are actually grave markers of the other three members. It’s unclear if you are aware of his killings and forced to mush to the cave or not. It could be interpreted that you are aware and forced as you see two killed expedition members in the cabin, or the scene could be interpreted as the scientist going over their notes after killing them. A possible explanation to the scientist’s belief of being trapped could be that he interpreted the hostility of the deer as a part of the location’s want to kill/keep him trapped there. After he makes you kill the deer they become hostile and charges at the sled. It could be that after the scientist mutilated that one deer, the other deer became hostile as he was tracking it and that this was when he got his “vision” or “knowledge” from the hallucinogenic mushrooms.
