I have a theory that is pretty much just speculation but based on the available information from this and a few others covering it. The perpetrators knew of some wrongdoing by the company (or at least perceived wrongdoing) because they were employees that were hurt by some choice the company made. They then switched up to other companies that they saw as equally wrong and deserved punishment. They didn't want to kill anyone, just the company. It explains the knowledge of the boss's house security, the kidnapping target himself and the switch from securely holding him to easily escapable holding, the arson of the vehicles of the company, the fake and low dose poisoning of the candy, the games with the ransom amount, and the fact that it all pretty much stopped after the one dude did himself in.

I think you're onto something there Keith! I initially thought, upon hearing theory 3, that it seems a very long time for a group of or many ppl to hang onto such a grievance and then uproot their lives to take revenge like that. BUT I'd forgotten that those ppl's lives would have been effected every day via their poor health and therefore the corporation that caused their problems would have been on their minds constantly, I imagine. Which, if that theory is true and they're 'ordinary ppl' (most likely) and not career criminals at work, makes it even more fascinating that they were able to achieve what they did w/o 100,000s of police being able to identify them. Incredible!! Great podcast guys! 🤩 Oh! And Keith was a chocolatier? OMG what an awesome job! Why did you give it up, Keith?

I think it was the police man who took his life - something about “he died like a man”… and the letters stopped after he passed , also what was interesting was the fact that they seemed to be trying to emphasise that they were “bad guys” , which would be the opposite of what would be his normal character… 🤔 also if he was the undercover cop or other people also knew about him in the force , I can’t remember if the “fox eyed man was identified or given a name” if he wasn’t he could of just been made up 🤔 probably not but the letters do read very strange. This one was so interesting ! Thanks for such entertaining podcasts

Re: theory 3-if true, Glico was a dry run. If the intent is to contaminate product without actually hurting anyone, you’d have to confirm that 1) suspect product is removed from shelves in a timely and complete manner, and 2) the ensuing media firestorm and recall are sufficient to actually damage the target company.

The Japanese solve rates aren't because they are so good. It's because they don’t arrest anyone until they gather enough information from people involved in the case and enough evidence to have a pretty bulletproof case once it's brought to court. They report guilty convictions as solved cases and not guilty findings as unsolved, not any open cases as unsolved. This means investigations are considered open and active until someone is arrested and tried, not as unsolved or "cold" cases. This can mean an investigator works a case for decades sometimes and it is never classified as unsolved. Prosecutors can also appeal an acquittal, meaning each new appeal, as it moves up the chain from court to court, is considered a brand new trial, therefore double jeopardy doesn’t apply to these appeals, whether or not new evidence arguments, or information has come to light, as different judges may view the exact same case under different interpretations of the law. Basically, those solve numbers are exaggerated based on the reluctance of the police and courts to arrest and/or bring to trial a case unless they're 99.99% sure they'll get a conviction. There are a lot of murderers, rapists and theives that are *never* brought to justice because the justice system itself is highly motivated to keep up appearances due to Japanese societal expectations that authority is always right.
@mykarma4345 Жыл бұрын
What about the obvious theory of disgruntled employees or ex employees of these companies going for a revenge and being sorry because the police were never their target.
