Doom 64 doesn't actually change anything with how the level geometry works, you still can't stack rooms on eachother *technically*. They pull it off using some incredibly clever level design techniques, but the limitation is still there. For example, notice that you can never fall off of a bridge

@1:32 don't know where you're getting your information from. Doom 64 was never going to use 3D models and the environments are still designed in the same exact fashion as the original Doom games. the only differences were some scripting enhancements, and colored lighting.

Just to clarify, the reload animations were also cut, as well as the models for the shotgunners. If you want to see some of the cut content in a mod, play Brutal DOOM 64

Doom 64's atmosphere was fantastic. More Lovecraftian and "alien" feeling than the first few games. The music is also great, done by Aubrey Hodges who also composed for N64 Quake 1 and 2, and PS1 Doom. I actually prefer his music to the original music.

You can complain about the lack of rock, but this was my first DOOM game growing up (age 8). I love the creep factor this was going for with the resurrected, radioactive zombie demons. Nothing else would officially scare me until I got my hands on Silent Hill.

This brings so much good memories when I played this game back then. I didn't own a N64 yet but I wanted to play this game at my cousins house most of the time. Though the puzzles were a pain hah. Sometimes take the fun out of it. Great review Dan. Our anticipation towards Doom has lot of common haha.

@@ThatCybertChannel I also remember playing Doom on the Sega Saturn as well. It wasn't as fun as N64 software. It was still fun but the N64 was way better. Especially graphic wise. I never tried Doom on the first PlayStation until I bought the Doom 3 edition and came with Doom 1 & 2. Glad you were able to play Doom 64 cause as a Doom fan, that is one of the games you had to try.

@@ThatCybertChannel I only have one problem with doom eternal and if it's true it's a BIG one They might be getting rid of snapmap which is a huge mistake considering it was 1/3rd of the first game if not more since you could do so much and you saw for yourself the incredible things people did with it In my eyes it would definitely hold doom eternal back from being 10/10 just knowing the game is missing something so large

The music in Doom 64 is way better than the PC original by miles and the PS1 version of Doom has the best. Aubrey Hodges is the man behind Doom PS1 Final Doom and Doom 64. The original ost is great but what Hodges did fit the Syfy horror that Doom is way better.

I think video clearly states this but the issue isn't the soundtrack itself, it's more that it doesn't belong in a game that's clearly an action game. Aesthetically it has horror elements but arguably that isn't enough to call it a horror game which to me is a clear misunderstanding on doom 3s part. To add to something, I think the reason why I personally think doom 64 is the weakest of the classic games is because despite it's great level design it doesn't do a lot to challenge the player other than increase the enemies damage output and strange arrow traps. Doom 1 was more survival, you had carefully manage what guns to use, save ammo on particular guns for tough encounters, it's possible to run out and end up using just the pistol. Doom 2 challenges the player with chaos, it throws 100s enemies at you with the largest variety of the classic enemies, the revenants in particular probably being one of my favourite enemies. Doom 2 also has interesting experimental level design and a huge emphasis of ambushes. Doom 64 is good game, it has some interesting secrets, the best classic final boss but ultimately it just feels like just another doom game.

I much prefer the eerie soundtrack of Doom 64, which followed Playstaion Doom that had done the same previously, both were done by a guy named Aubry Hodges and he did an amazing job. The midi rock tracks of the original pc dooms just sound out of place and cheesy. I love Doom 64, never owned it back in the day and played it for the first time about 2 years ago and was very surprised at how good it is. I'd say it's the best fps on the Ninbtendo 64 (along with Quake) and has aged so much better than Golden Eye and the Turok games. Like you said, Doom 64 ex is the way to go.

You also need the actual Doom 64 ROM to play it (it does NOT work with Doom II), hence the 100% faithful recreation. You can either extract the ROM from the N64 cartridge (the instructions on how to do so are on the official site), or you can download the ROM from the Emuparadise website (only do this if you have the N64 game, to show that you purchased it and avoid possible piracy issues). I hope this helps... 😉

Goldeneye is garbage. It was never any good. The only reason it's remembered fondly is because of nostalgia. Horrible graphics, horrible controls, outdated gameplay. It's a piece of shit. Even at the time I remember finding it only ok.
