Why is the Honda Accord So Hated?

Hondas are some of the most fun cars to build. They are light weight, have an insane amount of engine options, and are a great way to start out your car loving career. With the Honda Civic usually being the preferred Honda platform for builds - one sometimes gets overlooked. The Honda Accord is a rare sight to see with engine swaps or turbo builds anymore, and I think that is a real shame. This H23 swapped Honda Accord shows you can take this generation Accord and truly make something special - so let's talk about it.

I daily a 97 EX sedan with 322k on it. Amazingly well put together car. My sweetheart car is a 1990 Accord EX that I manual swapped then rebuilt the engine in. The general consensus is that the 4th gen was the most favorite Accord followed by 3rd then 5th. 5th gen is nice, but the interior quality materials and design started cheapening a little bit more compared to 3rd and 4th due to the economy at the time so cost cutting was evident, though it did become more modern in design that previous gens. I also think 90-93 had a more aggressive design. I had a 91 wagon before that that had a Accord type R h22 red top with a t2w4 lsd manual in it.. that thing was spectacular, and I kept the AC and PS. Sounds like the 4th gen Si lude transmission isn't the best match for vtec in this car.. gears are way too long. The best combination is to get a h22 trans and use the Accord 5th gear so it's not revving 4k @ 80mph.

the accord isn't hated unless you're talking to clout chasers on instagram. for the most part, everyone i've run into had "i've slept on accords" as the worst they could say about it. car people - at least the right car people - will appreciate any tastefully done vehicle, and a lot of them find charm in an unpopular chassis. and thank god for those people, because the car scene really doesn't need more slammed br-z's. there's a lot of people who care too much about the model to see the build, and what i hate most is that they didn't care about the miata or the civic until they became expensive. people like that make it clear that they don't care about cars, they care about status. i just stay away from those people and my life is so much better for it.

In fact, the most affordable "tuner" cars were Accords because kids would get them from their mom or dad. I remember falling in love with the 6th Gen Coupe in 1997 when it first hit the market. I walked past one everyday at University. One of the profs drove it. Thought it was so sick. Even today, I'd drive an older Accord no problem. I also liked the Acura Vigors. Super grateful for my dad gifting me a 5th gen accord as my first car. It has 200k miles, and has had plenty of issues pop up, but being able to work on these things myself without hassle (except the stupid captive rotors) has been a blessing. Love my accord. I even installed coil overs and cold air intake myself!

Just like the prelude and crx, the suspension is held together by tiny breakable little struts and bars with small bushings that wear out easily. Very fragile suspension.

These old Accords are CRIMINALLY Underrated in the car community. I drive a Gen.4 accord myself (Sadly one generation before Vtec was introduced) and I absolutely would recommend to anyone who likes how the EG Civic drives for example. The engine isn't the Best, as the piston rods might go through the block if you throw some boost on there, but it's a Honda, so you can swap a Much better motor in there with little issue (Would recommend an H22 for the Cb7)

Why is the Honda Accord from that era so hated? Simple, the VAST MAJORITY of them in this country are automatics. Which if your in the 4 cylinder Honda game its just not worth it.

Man David, I wish you could've driven my JDM J32A (3.2L SOHC VTEC V6) six speed manual swapped 2001 Accord sedan. It had a GTS3582 turbo running on an AEM Series II standalone. It made 502 whp at 10 psi. A student driver pulled out directly in front of me with his instructor and I tried to avoid him by driving into a drainage ditch, but I still hit him. I scrapped it because the frame was twisted.

I'm currently driving a 94' Accord LX trim with 148,000KM on it. Sadly it's autotragic, but with the traffic now adays, that's not the worst thing ever for me. It's nearly 30 years old at this point so I've found some problems, leaking power steering, a bit of rust here and there. But other than that and regular maintenance items, it's been a great car. Everyone is shocked by the interior. Expecting it to just be a shitbox, when it's really more like a couch. Comphy, wide, and low. What a fun vibe. Honestly, love the thing.

I would love to see you in a properly set up first generation TSX. They're basically the European accord type S. Everyone knows the k24a2 but what many don't realize is the accord family has the same suspension setup as the NSX and S2000 with double wishbones up front and a five arm watts link independent rear suspension. I have a '06 TSX with upgraded control arms, bushings, sway bars, Bilstein dampers, eibach progressive springs, spherical sway bar adjustable end links, and a big rear sway bar and you wouldn't believe the way that accord handles. Then there's the usual bolt-ons + time and the other noteworthy thing is I've upgraded to TL type S brakes. David there's a guy in VA Beach named Justin Barrett with a comptech supercharged black TSX with a proper full build that would be a great example for you to see what the chassis is capable of. The TSX is more than just a motor donor. When spoon sports decided to enter the US market they chose the CL7 Accord / TSX chassis because it had the best suspension setup of all the Hondas of that era. The Civic and RSX went to McPherson struts leaving only the Accord / TSX with double wishbones. They said that car was the best handling front wheel drive car they've ever seen. Larry Chen did a really great video on the spoon CL7 euroR endurance race car.

You need to find a CB7 or a CB9 let’s start from there or an older Accord They are appreciate it in the Honda Community. It is not as popular as the civics that’s all. But great video been watching you for years.

Kind of wanted to build my Element with a 'real VTEC" K24, TSX 6th gear, etc but realized even with VTEC and what 40 more top end HP and a better freeway top gear... it's still a heavy toaster.

As a Honda fan and 5th time Civic owner i would say the Accords are under appreciated. Before my current FG4 i was looking at V6 Accords with the J series motor. I recently heard a modified one and it sounded amazing yet unique.

Hondas aren’t bad it’s the people that really make them look bad. I’d drive one as a daily to work but honestly it would just have to be clean with stock wheels and some tint. Lol. And quiet as hell. Don’t forget that part. Mine would be very quiet. But if the Honda thing is someone’s thing I don’t knock them at all.

These aren’t hated, they’re just undesirable. Most came auto & it has the F series. An H series can drop in easily, but most people aren’t picking an accord over a 4/5g prelude.

My '94 has done almost 1/2 million kilometers. It has needed nothing apart from normal servicing by me. It needed 1 fuel pump, one timing belt and water pump. Nothing else. It is a bit tired now, needs a VSS, and starts first kick. I'm a designer, and the styling is absolutely superb, timeless. Never knock an Accord please! People who actually KNOW, never hang crap on them, but those who do are usually brainless beemer owners who think that spending more money on a blue and white logo badge is somehow cooler. With the money I've saved over the years I could have bought 4 overpriced Beemers.
