It's not just rally inspired, it's rally homologated. Group A rally had some pretty stringent homologation requirements, more than the successor regulations. Hence Evos 1-6 share a lot of WRC car features. Someone should hook up an anti-lag system instead of the BOV :)

Old School Mitsubishi at heart here. Evos are JDM AF because they were all imported (with 7 bolt block and EIII16G turbo) whereas all DSM's were manufactured here in Illinois. Have always loved the first gen Evos. To this day they are still so cool in my eyes, especially considering they were Rally cars for the street because of early homologation rules. Even with just 400-500 HP on tap, they felt like they had more. Down here in the Bahamas years back, you could see a couple on the road being daily driven but not anymore, you only spot them every once in a while now
@CaptainTonus2 жыл бұрын
It's not "technically" a DSM at all. The DOHC 4G63T engine existed before DSM's began production in the US. It was used in the Galant VR4 starting in 1987, a good 3 years before DSM's were sitting on showroom floors. The engine in that EVO III has some similarities to a 2g DSM engine, but simply having a 4G63 under the hood does not make anything a DSM as they were used on a ton of other Mitsubishi vehicles during this time period.

This is difficult to watch. A DSM is an American car. The Evo III is not a DSM. The first 4g63 was used in 87. That's where it started, not the 2g, not the 1g... The Dandelion Yellow CE9A and the Nayez Blue Pearl CP9A were immortalized by two movies named respectively "Thunderbolt" by Jackie Chan and "The Legend Of Speed" back in the mid-90s among that generation of enthusiast from the cantonese diaspora around the SEA region. To me these films would be the "Fast and Furious" Car culture films of that era that exposed my peers to the still contained JDM culture. Back then my country could recieve a metric ton of surplus JDM front end from hacked up scrap cars on a weekly basis due to Japan's 5 year shaken mandate, Many japanese car owners would rather trade up and scrap their cars over some minor collision so the alternative DSM scene that i know of kinda started this way, just with discount lancer and mirage chassis instead of AWD eclipse chassis over at the states. This one really hits home seeing that the EVO 3 has finally cleared the import requirements, more people could get to taste these forbidden machines over at the western hemisphere.

Used to have a EVO 3 here in NZ, I sold it to finance buying a pretty trick Nissan GTI-R Pulsar, the Baby Godzilla. It was chock full of NISMO goodies, and was a real hoot. It, like the EVO was a Japanese import. Due to the 2nd hand Japanese import boom of the late 80s thru to the 2000s, loads of JDM homologation models ended up here (we drive on the same side of the road as the Japanese) EVO's, STI's, Gallant VR-4's, Celica GT4's, also tons of Skyline GTRs, Supras, Silvia S13/14/15s, RX-7s, Type R Civics and Integras. All these models were sold new in New Zealand as well, but the imported ones far outnumber the NZ new ones. Sadly they, once common, are getting thin on the ground, partly due to being the car of choice of young drivers, but many are now being bought by overseas buyers and shipped out. Last year i was with a friend who was buying a Mustang from the U.S from an importer, and next to the port where the importer had his warehouse, there was a yard that was a JDM lovers wet dream. A couple of R32 Skyline GTR,s some early EVOs a EK Type R civic and a couple of others, all been bought by overseas buyers and leaving the country. Ones that are still here are going for stupid money. Wish i'd kept some of the ones ive owned. :-)

Depends what you want out of it. To keep it a nice street car fit an evo 3 exhaust manifold, turbo, o2 housing, and a mandrel 2.5 inch exhaust. Fit a good flowing but not huge intercooler and 2.25 inch pipe kit. Change the MAF sensor to 2g or evo 8, fit evo 3 (560cc) injectors or bigger if you want E85 and a fuel pump. Fit ARP head bolts, get a tune and turn up the boost to 20psi and you're done. Then start looking for a 4 bolt LSD rear end.
