I do mostly OrangeTheory and weights at home. I’ve cycled through Nano X3, Metcon 9, Nobull Trainers (& Trainer +) as well as Metcon Free 5. For OTF I’ve found my best shoe is the Metcon Free 5. Only gripe with that one is that it takes a bit longer to get out of the rower because of that heel extension. Other than that, feels great for the 1-2 mile runs on the tread and stable enough for the floor exercises. Nano X3 and Metcon 9’s don’t have as much action as the Free for running but I love those two for lifting and floor exercises.

Not necessarily, but I use most of the shoes I review for longer dog walks to assess comfort, breathability, and durability. Those walks generally are 1-3 miles in length depending on the day. Each week, I try to accumulate 10-20 miles of walking in different models. It's a nice easy and passive way to further assess daily wear functionality! Which shoes are you thinking about and maybe I can shed some context?

Jake, you have given me some good suggestions but I found out that I can actually try the XT2s on in person at a local shop and that is a huge plus so I am thinking about giving them a go. Do you think they would be a good transition from a Reebook nano for an all-around training shoe for someone with wide feet (forefoot is my wide point)? I've got Xero 360s and I do like them, but I can't handle them for more than about 30 minutes at a go, yet. I just need a little more stack height for now. As an aside, the barefoot transition is going SLOW. Zero drop isn't an issue but stack height of less than about 11mm gets to me. Lunas Origens casually and Jim Green BFAR with 3mm veg tan insole added (the bare leather lasting board was killing my socks) are things I can wear all day every day. On the trails or in town, it doesn't matter. But they have a higher stack height and some firm but existent cushion. My 360's, not so much! Anyway, thank you. You have so of the most detailed and down to earth videos I have ever watched.
@thatfitfriend5 ай бұрын
I think they could worth trying. The Topo Athletic ST-5 is also fantastic as a transition shoe along with the Lems Primal and Lems Primal Zen! And that's alright - gotta give the body time to suggest. Think about how many years the nervous system adapted to a certain proprioceptive feel. There's no race - slow and steady wins, even if our internal mindset and social media want us to feel differently! Appreciate you checking out the content, homie!

Hi Jake! Just tried on the Rad one I bought from rogue. I feel it is a bit narrow in mid-shoe area or very stiff there and so it like pressures my feet arches kinda inwards and upwards and causes light pain there. I have narrow feet so the toe box feels fine and true to size fit and the heel does not slip at all, unlike what happened with the nano X3. I had the same problem/pressure in the arches with nike Free metcon I tried a year ago. Any advice? The trainers I use the last 2 years is Asics kayano and I do a basic gym machine workout routine and some free weights, squats, pull ups push ups, lunges, bench etc.

Hmm...I'd give the RAD a little more time break in if you don't feel like returning them. Another option to explore could be the Adidas Dropset Trainer 2. You can prob find them on sale and they may have a sole construction that aligns with your foot anatomy here.
@anastasiosvra90247 ай бұрын
@@thatfitfriend Yes I really liked the look and all around purpose of the Rad one but it really caused me some arch pain after the first time trying them on and doing some light dumbbell exercises. I mostly realized it after the workout. Do you find the Rads to have aggressive mid-foot taper compared to other training pairs?? I m worried that I might not be very tolerant to that kind of mid-foot taper since the Nike free metcon caused me exactly the same discomfort. It's like having a sensitivity right at the arch even though I'm not flat footed.!

It’s funny how much the “CrossFit” shoe has changed. Comparing my Metcon 4 with my Nano x3, the Metcon is more than half an inch wider. Nanos are considered the wide option these days. My toes are cramped in the Nano (except the Froning cos it’s stretchy). Tribase Reign is wider and doesn’t feel like I’m borrowing my wife’s heels. I think the BP Savage1 is the correct direction. Back to basics.

really great overview. it’s very thorough. i currently use the Xero 350 for the gym and running 🏃♂️. i find it to be most good. however, some downsides. while the top of the toe box is very durable, the front of the toe box is pretty crappy. not to mention, the back of the heel is pretty crappy too. for weightlifting 🏋️♀️, it was initially more difficult to get under the bar while doing clean & jerk or snatch, but the body adapted to it. it not so good at agility workouts. it’s also not so good at functional. pulling and pushing sleds always feel it’s gonna come off. it’s pretty crap on a mtn bike with flat pedals. The pedals digs into the feet will pedaling. it’s truly awful going of jumps and dropouts. it’s more ok’ish on a spin bike. overall, I really like it for the gym and running 🏃♀️.

I ordered the Reebok nano x4 but the size was just way too small, then ordered half a size bigger and it was too big lol. any suggestions on just a good overall training shoe, metcon 9 seems good but I dont rope climb and hate the design of the metcon 9 with the rope guard full up

Dropset Trainer 2 / Mizuno TS 01 / UA TriBase Reign 6 all will work well, imo, especially if it's for sessions to train for hockey where you'll be explosive + lifting. I used to play growing up, too!

Nike Free Metcon 5 or Nano X3/Nano X4 could be great options to look into! Keep in mind, good cross-training shoes will typically fall a little short for longer runs

Reebok nano or altra solstice- which is more wide in toe box? Altra?
@thatfitfriend Жыл бұрын
Altra, buttttt that model is sub-par for heavy training/CrossFit. If the latter are in your performance asks then the Nano 2.0 or BP Savage 1 would be good options!

Hi Jake - Love your content. As someone from Europe, the three options for women's shoes are not very widely available in stores here. Wonder what you'd recommend between Nike metcon 9, Adidas superset 2, Reebok nano x3, and under armour tribase reign 5. These brands are easier to get my hands on! My main issues with training (predominantly individual gym workouts, 4 X a week & a very very very occasional CrossFit class) are that I lack depths with (free weight) squats - which I unfortunately now avoid but they get slightly better once I put my heels on weights, and I tend to "forward fold" less. Sometimes my forefoot wants to come off ground so not a huge fan of a small/floating toe box. Wondering if higher heel to toe drop helps with this, in addition to the never ending hip flexibility and ankle mobility exercises 😅. I don't do heavy weightlifting by the way, and I always do some sort of cardio pre or post work out, just warm up. I own a pair of running shoes for the approx. 2 times a month I go outside for a longer run. The second thing is some instability with unilateral work on the lower body. Hope you can share some thoughts! 😁😁😁
@thatfitfriend Жыл бұрын
I'd go with the Nano X3 or Dropset Trainer 2. 1) They'll have higher heel-to-toe drops (7mm and 6mm, respectively) which could help translate to better squat mechanics regarding needing a little heel elevation for you. 2) Nano X3 will be slightly better for runnability, but the Dropset Trainer 2 works fine for intervals and sprints. I'd pass on the Metcon 9 because it's sub-par for $150 and the TriBase Reign 5 because its lower 2mm drop likely wouldn't feed well into your current needs.
