Thank you for a good video on replacing a garbage disposal unit. One thing to note in this video. When wiring the cord to the disposal unit it does matter which disposal wire connects to which cord wire. On the cord wire "jacket" one side has a rib or a stripe. The corresponding wire is to be connected to the white wire in the disposal. This assures the neutral and hot wires are wired correctly internally to the motor. Although the unit will operate, either way, this has to do with internal electrical insulation for personal safety. Thanks again from a retired union electrician.

11:46. Sorry, but I talked to a professional plumber and he said DO NOT use channel locks. That is too much. He recommended using the Allen Wrench and a screwdriver to push gently. The man who told me this works for a very reputable plumbing contractor in the Boston, Massachusetts, area.

Before you begin to remove old unit it is a good idea to FIRST PRESS THE RED CIRCUIT BREAKER on the bottom of the garbage disposal. Don't ask me how I know.

Hello, great easy to follow, informative garbage disposal replacement tutorial. At 9:45 in the video you say it doesn't matter which way you wire. The cord you are using has 2 black wires, one had ridges, the other is smooth. The wire with ridges is the "hot" and should be connected to the colored or striped wire in the disposal. The smooth is the "neutral" and is connected to the white wire. Incorrect wiring may cause an unsafe condition.

Thats just a easy connection point. Filtering depends on the dishwasher. Sometimes food particles can get through.

My garbage disposal is located on the left side of my double sink. All videos I've seen, the disposals are located on the right side. They are always installed directly next to the dishwasher. Should my disposal be located on the right instead of left?

Just a few observations, technically you did not need to remove the garbage disposal Mount from the sink because the old one was the same as the new one. But I understand you wanted to show the process of installing it. Also you could have cut the cord off the old disposal and use that if it was long enough, then buying a new cord wouldn't have been needed. Cutting cords off of old appliances is also a good idea for future use.

I use I thin smear of plumber's grease (petroleum grease) on both flat sides of the rubber washer. U can buy a tube of the stuff wherever u buy your plumbing supplies. It's inexpensive stiff. Use it also on the rubber seal on the water filter in the frig when replacing the filter. I bought mine at HD for a few bucks. Comes in a tube like toothpaste.

Have a single sink with disposer and been getting clogs where water pushes back into sink when disposer is off. Proally need to check lines as nothing drains. Could it be the disposer getting bad? If you throw some Ice in the disposal and run it with water does it grind the ice? If so it still works good and that is not the issue. Is the sink backing up when you run the dishwasher? Can you send me a Picture of your piping? Did snaking the line help at all?

Yes I will add it to the list. My quick tip is that I always buy a bit more than I need. You will use it all at some point or can return it. 45 degree elbows, 45 degree street elbows and 22 degree elbows will be your friend.

In all the garbage disposal installations online, not one addressed the problem of overcoming resistance of dry rubber mounting seals and collars against mental parts. Such resistance occurs due lack of lubrication of the different surfaces. This can lead to improper alignment of disposal unit into mounting collar seat which can result in leaks. A very simple solution requires a thin coating of lubricant to surfaces, such as lithium grease to alleviate resistance. This also makes installation and later removal much easier.

9:45 I installed my garbage disposal today, it is a badge 5. one important thing I have noticed is that, the two black wires from the power cord are not exactly the same, the smooth wire (the wire that connects to the thinner prong on the outlet) is the hot wire ant it should connect to the hotwire in the disposer , which is black wire on my badge 5, and the black&yellow wire on yours, The wire with ribs around it is the neutral wire and it should connect to the white wire on the disposer. I'm not sure what will happen if wires are installed reversed, is the disposer going to spin in the opposite way? Anyway, it is always safet to connect the right way.

You are correct the hot and neutral wires are different. The first comment on this video I pinned a video showing this as well. If you accidentally mixed that up it will still work the same. It may cause the motor to go out quicker.

I don't think there is a con for either one. it just depends on the set up. I like to put my disposal tee straight out and some people like to go down and over. That 90 is usually for if you are going down into a trap.

Yes they are. I have a separate video on it, but if you have a wire that has no white and you don’t know that the neutral connects to the side of the cord with ridges then as long as you got the green on the ground it is going to work.

I appreciate the video, but one question…. Why didn’t you put a p trap pvc connection to the grange disposal going into the drain

Just cause it was a double bowl sink. I put on a disposal tee which drains both the disposal and the other sink into one p trap. You could do 2 traps one for each bowl of the sink. They just don't around here.

I would have used the old one, but my friend wanted the new one installed. I would use the old one most of the time unless requested. Good savings right there.

maybe this is a stupid question, but why not just take a hacksaw to the assembly that sits between the garbage disposal and the sink?

For what purpose? Just for cutting the pipe down to size? You totally could do that I just like the tubular cutter. Cleaner and real easy.
