I like that you leave all your errors in there like it would happen in the real world. Most edit them out or make the situation look like it's as easy as making a pb and j sandwich. You really are a great teacher. Very informative video.

Thank you RJ. I think it is important for people to see the mishaps as well. It’s plumbing. It never goes perfect no matter how good you are. I did edit out the leg crap and the back spasm though! No one needs to hear that. Tight spaces suck’.

You just saved me the expense of getting a plumber to replace a leaky hot water cpvc joint! I did the repair in about 30 minutes and it doesn’t leak! Your instructions were very complete and understandable. I would have bought the wrong glue if I hadn’t watched your video. Like you, I didn’t want to wait 6 hours to test the joint. What I did was turn off the water heater, and then took a “Hollywood” shower, using up all of the hot water! Thanks again, and you’ve gained a subscriber.

Thanks for the tips Brian. Honestly plumbing is not anything that I would want to do full time. I have done lots on my house and some for family and friends so seeing this is always helpful and is good knowledge to have. Cold wet crawl spaces makes it even more difficult, you have shown us some of the nastiness that you deal with. And for that I have to say thumbs UP to you for doing what you do. 👍

Your welcome Richard. A crawl space is not my favorite place, but if I am able I’m always willing to help someone out. It’s one way I know how to let Christ’s light shine through me. Thank you for watching. I hope you have a great weekend.

Hey Brian thanks for sharing, that is so frustrating when you are trying to glue the joints together and water comes out and messes it up. I hate insulation under a house. I took mine out it was falling down in places and in the summertime where my floor registers were it would wick the moisture off my flex duct where they sweat from the humidity and draw it up next to the wood and it starting to cause mold. I have noticed no change in my electric bill. Take care and have a great weekend 👍
@ThatFixItGuy
@ThatFixItGuy 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Britt! That is a weird things to happen. Glad you got that taken care of. If you took out just a little around your registers I don’t think you would notice that. Nobody wants mold! Thank you and hope you have a great weekend as well!

Used more 90’s than necessary and made it more difficult at the end. You could have not glued the 90 on the pipe off of the beam and made a “U” with 2- 90’s and pipe which could have been glued on both remaining pipes at the same time by pressing on the ends rather than having to glue 3 joints at once. Worked okay but you made the job harder than it had to be. Other than that it was a good job.

Cutting old CPVC with ratcheting cutters is like tossing matches into a powder keg. Sometimes it just goes boom and shatters all over the place.

Nice job but you could have used one less 90 and made the job easier by connecting diagonally between the two sections of pipe.

Thanks for the video. Wouldn't PEX be a better solution? No worries about water messing up glue joints, less couplings, can be used immediately. Also more reliable than cpvc. Not criticizing, just curious, as I believe you've used PEX before.
@ThatFixItGuy
@ThatFixItGuy 3 жыл бұрын
It would have been but for just a small repair I did not want to make that transition. You have to transition to pex and I could have with a sharkbite, it would be the quick way without gluing. Any other way and you have to glue.

Yes, you are correct. That cpvc with age can get brittle and makes it hard to cut with ratcheting cutters. Can become a headache to fix. When those cutter put pressure on that cpvc pipe it can sometime crack that cpvc pipe in the area of the repair creating a hairline crack. Then you have another problem and leak. Not fun! May have to use another way to cut the cpvc pipe.

wow fancy water meter mine looks like Archimedes made it. so why didn't you just run the pipe diagonally from top elbow down to the bottom one rather than square vertical and horizontal so you could use one less elbow and get slightly better flow

😂. I like the old analog style meters I can actually see the dial moving and I like that. Your right that would have worked really well. This is why I always like other people to walk jobs. There is always more than one way to skin a cat.

Those ratcheting pipe cutters are very similar to ratcheting pruners, and probably could be used as a substitute in a bind. Have you cut pipe with fishing line?

Brian, when there's water on the floor in the crawl space, that becomes a cruel space. I've done demo on heat pipes under businesses, and the tigher it gets, the more cruel it becomes.

this is why i never use plastic pipes or anything new I'll let others test them out for reliability. I like the old copper pipes they are tried for 70 years in my house. I've heard that the cpvc can crack if it is old just from being brittle when using those shear cutters how old is that piping?
@ThatFixItGuy
@ThatFixItGuy 3 жыл бұрын
All that is true. Copper is king for sure. More time and more money these days but so worth it. Cpvc is not a great product and yes this style of cutter can crack brittle pipe I always give a little twist when cutting to avoid fully pressing on the pipe and potentially cracking it. Cutting with a saw is a great option. Dull ratchet cutters can cause an issue as well. My cutter is brand new. The pipe is around 20 years out but surprisingly did not seem to be brittle in any way like some of the other experiences I’ve had with cpvc. Thanks Greg.

I don’t understand the thing about draining the hot water tank. Can’t the homeowner just make the repair in the afternoon, then not turn on any hot water until the next day? I mean you’re not going to have any hot water flowing thru your pipes unless you actually turn on hot water at the sink or shower, right? Thanks for your help!

Are those ratcheting cutters okay to use on old CPVC? I have a leak in the wall, and am looking for something to cut the old, brittle pipe that won’t make it crack or splinter. Do the ratchets put pressure on the pipe? What would you recommend? Thanks!

It might work but a hacksaw is what is recommended for old cpvc.
