5:01 - actually, it was a Winter blockbuster! It came out around Christmas! Maybe it was because I loved the movie so much as a young boy, but even if they lacked in quality, I enjoyed them as a young boy. Also, I actually thought the card art was awesome. It was what attracted to me to the toys in the first place. (I hadn't even heard of the movie yet when I first saw the figures. Never knew they had a Smee, Thud Butt or Croc figure. Certainly didn't see them in stores as a little boy, or I would have made sure my mom got them for me. Rufio's accessory wasn't a sail boat - it was a "sail board", a skateboard with a sail attached to it.
@Stiffkittens015 жыл бұрын
it makes perfect sense, business wise - to put the weapons in a tray. There will be just the one mold, not to mention no labour involved in snapping them separately (I imagine that is done mechanically now) plus no additional painting required

1 seems pretty low for the packaging.

6:20 the figure you show that squirts water is the same that a Batman Dark Knight Collection figure did, it “climbs” via a string in the backpack. And the Rufio one you show next doesn’t come with a sailboat that’s those skateboard things with a sail they ride around. Also the red Hook (which is the best looking figure) isn’t articulated at all, it has a gimmick where the legs stretch to make him taller. The figure itself is static.

90's G.I. Joe figures also had those but it was far worse because they were re-using accessories from other figures in line. But then again at least figures were actually good so I can forgive it with vintage G.I. Joe line.

I love these. You are so serious about the process. One thing to remember about movie figures, and action figures in general, minimum 12 months from concept to store for a quantity figure. I highly doubt they gave Mattel 12 months to provide a finished product. Before Star Wars, likeness rights didn't matter much. The 80s were full of cartoon characters as toys, some live action, but the 90s saw every big action, movies kids might see, wanting a toy line. I would like to see you compare ARAH 1983 to ARAH 93 figures. Make an honest comparison. Then do the same with Star Wars. 1979 figures with the final wave of POTF coin figures. In the 90s, Gen X was working, buying what they like, and the younger kids were playing SNES, N64, Playstation, computers, etc.

I had that raft in my house, but don't remember any figures with it. The movie actually came out in December. I've noticed the millennial generation seems to regard it as more of a classic kids film. Being a reader of magazines at the time, I was aware of the reception. In the entertainment media, it was touted for the extravagant sets that were built for it, and such fantasy adventure movies were a rarity in the early '90s. I remember Roger Ebert asking "why didn't Spielberg just remake Peter Pan?" but the idea did seem intriguing. That said, I have not been motivated to watch any of the Peter Pan movies that have come out since then

just a thought but you should maybe go back & add another category: Source material. were these fiures worthy of getting action figures made? just how good were the films? For some, that would definitely have been a big part on whether or not to get these or not

I agree the figures weren't great and that the Hook figure was the most visually appealing in the line. However I have to disagree about the packaging. Sure it's pretty standard in design and layout, but that original character artwork (for me) was always a treat back in the day. Almost all the Kenner movie tie-in sets had either a painted interpretation of the figure, vehicle or playset on the pack or included some kind of collector card within. I love that aspect of most 80's/90's figure lines
@thatguysstuff155 жыл бұрын
They were supposed to release a huge treehouse playset but it never got released . Im sure if it had, the line would have sold quite well . Same with the captain planet action figures . They never gave us a hope island playset. They showed it . But no release . 90s were a very interesting time for action figures . Overly bright neon colors and no playsets. But way better plastic then todays .

I didn't want them because they were lame! My friend got me the stupid Hooks "tri hook" toy for my birthday and it was gawd awful to be honest! It had a hook, a saw, and some kind of weird other tool. It wasn't anything like Capt. Jas Hook had in the movie at all. Loved the movie but not the toys!

The astrix figures were amazing from the cartoon but a bit expensive. ET was real cool I liked the little wined up toy posh kid at school had one that had its extendable neck lucky shit bag the hook figures look like something you get free with a bloody big Mac the hook one looks quite good
@ia56625 жыл бұрын
As far as likenesses, fine, maybe not even close to Robin Williams. But Hook looks like Dustin in the outfit and the line itself was INCREDIBLY diverse and cool. The vehicles were awesome, their role play toys are awesome. Demolition Man absolutely takes the cake. The play value with the Hook toys is definitely there and fantastic. Captain Hook had alternative looks with fun accessories as did Pan. POTF2 figures had awful stances too and machismo to the max. HOOK was a great toy line! Adults hate HOOK, kids love it. You have to look at it all from the eyes of a kid. I still love the movie. A lot of magical and really cool unproduced toys as well. Check out the European releases, some really rare stuff that goes for crazy amounts. You also say the figures look NOTHING like the characters. YES they did. You're using the heads as evidence for their crappiness? The head sculpt is certainly the worst part, but the entire outfits are practically perfect. A lot of the figures DO have features. You really blew through these ignorantly. The Tall Terror Hook actually grows, you pull his legs out. The Swashbuckling Peter Pan has the MOTU feature with spring loaded torso. Ace has the spraying water backpack. Bill Jukes has a spring-loaded arm for his whip accessory. The packaging is great - it's got pirate adventure written all over it! If the accessories are the dumbest thing you've ever seen, go look at TMNT. Every single character had their weapons on a whole sheet. Ditto with a lot of GI JOES, this is NOTHING new for 90s figures. You really have to judge these in the era they were in. These were extremely creative and fun for me to play with as a kid, my brother loved it too, they had great quality and still hold up today. I demand a re:review lol!
