I have some stress cracks over a few interior doors. The usual fix is to clean out and widen the crack, fill with hot mud, tape, coat with compound, and coat again gradually wider and wider to make the hump disappear. This tapeless mud might be a good way to fill in just the crack, clean off the edges and paint over, thereby avoiding the hassle of matching texture and hiding a hump in the wall.

Door slam test seems the most logic approach. mud a joint on the hinge side of a door and them slam it .maybe that'll be a rigid enough test
@ابراهيمالجبوري-خ7ق Жыл бұрын
So I’ll let everyone in on a trade secret if you want to avoid using tape the simplest way is to use an elastic caulking or a flexible caulking and put it in the joints so it creates a nice base and then you can use just regular all purpose over that caulking and it won’t crack because it’ll be on top of the caulking and it’s a flexible solid base. Make sure the caulking is not just regular caulking it has to be the stretchable/flexible caulking or this won’t work

Definitely a use for pre fill. But as your 1st test shows it is not strong enough to stand any movement. New homes settle and lumber expands and contracts as does drywall. This is a silly product. Durabond is strong enough for prefill and coating metal bead. No need for this . btw fiber in concrete is awful to mag and trowel. Looks bad too. Not a fan of it.I . Hey my friend another great video. Being a commercial contractor with the movement that I see in office buildings and the thousands and thousands of broken scenes that we have to fix. Anytime that strong winds like there is today you get a lot of flex movement in those joints. In high-rises we only use that fiber tape. It has notoriously done better than even paper tape. That fiberglass filled stuff looks like it might be good for a patch. But not for a joint. I have to agree with you totally on that. Hope you're doing well and staying safe greetings again from your friend Doug

I live in Sweden. I have ordered fibers that is used for concrete/cement. I will try them when I'm going to repair but joint cracks. But I'm going to place a joint tape over it to even more make sure it wont crack.
@stephanpetranker899410 ай бұрын
First, one has to consider why a joint cracks after the initial drying/shrinking of the material. Ultimately, a crack forms when the two boards move relative to one another. On reason is the framing expanding/contracting dissimilarly due to different materials, taking on humidity/moisture differently etc, or vibration. Reinforced material would resist expansion better than non. So, how about setting up a test wall and cooling it substantially (freezer?) and then bringing to a warm temperature quickly? This would cause a rapid expansion of the different materials substantively - like a house that is allowed to get to freezing temps and then warmed quickly when the owner returns. The reverse also can work, taking a warm test wall section and then freezing it quickly. Do this with fiber reinforced, standard tape method, and no tape/just mud. Thoughts? The other test of vibration or movement ….. this would be more complicated….the above three test walls subject to vibration in the framing…like a house that is subject to nearby construction (…or earthquake :)

That looks just like (Mil Fiber) that's we use in molds and fiberglass fabrication. You can add that to almost any type of product that you want to add strength to. Precautions.. its fiber and you must wear a respirator when working with it especially when mixing and sanding.
@ofrimashiah24 жыл бұрын
Fiberglass is added to concrete to give resistance to small cracks. The problem with concrete is that it cannot stretch hence you add rebar mesh at the bottom part so the steel reaist the stretches and together with that the concrete stays in one piece and doesnt break. Im not sure about fiberglass fibers in mud. Tell us your opinion and what you think of it cause Im just not sure yet. First time hearing about it
@Gearhead-en8dz3 жыл бұрын
Wire mesh and rebar do not stop cracking. Fiber glass rebar does not stop cracking. Plastisizer does not stop it. Fibermesh does not stop it. Nothing stops concrete from cracking. Self Healing Concrete is the new thing.

I've wondered if you could just glue the edges of the sheets as they go up before you tape, glue is pretty strong. The make dripless glue bottles that make less mess and even have centering tongs that keep the glue perfectly centered without having to try to.

Only just saw your video. I was in touch with the inventor of this product a few years ago as he lived in my city but the pandemic was just starting and I lost touch with him. I never tried the product. This product may be useful in doing repairs, but I don't see it as useable in production taping (new work). It's just too slow. But as I'm now doing service work and repairs I think there would be a use for the product, for example when holes have been overcut around electrical boxes or sprinklers and I want to be able to fill the hole without having to add extra mud to cover the thickness of tape. I would use it in non-stressed areas away from an actual joint. I wouldn't use it near stair nosing as this is too stressed. I wouldn't use fibatape either in this case, but just paper tape, or maybe fibafuse.

Hi That Kilted Guy. Thanks for all you videos they’re helping me through the mudding process at my new fixer upper house. I know this video is old, but as a structural engineer (in training) maybe I can contribute some thoughts on your tests of the mud in bending. Your taped joints will only add strength in bending when you press down from the top when the tape is on the bottom. That tests the taped joint’s strength in tension. If you reverse this test you would need to also strengthen the untaped side by some method. You’d want that side to be stronger so that it doesn’t fail before the side we are testing. Perhaps multiple pieces of tape could suffice.
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY Жыл бұрын
Yeah I know I tested it in compression instead of tension so it wasn’t perfect but maybe I can redo it one day. Thanks

I agree that a proper test would be under tension on the finished side, and screwed into actual wall studs.

This is my opinion from what I know, heard and seen..! I’m a rookie professional painter and handyman. My experience is limit but I’ve seen and heard enough where I know the stubbornness of professions as well as the failures of “Game Changing Products”. Now on to my observation. This product reminds me of CGC Concrete Fill which has fiberglass fibers. I never used it but one Drywaller on Instagram uses it around shower head and faucets cutouts to reinforce it in her own words.! I guess to fix the shitty cutouts some people make. Probably used it for electrical outlet cutouts as well.! With that being said as painter if it works it would work great for patch jobs since filling in seams and embedding tape becomes one process which theoretically and lack of knowledge of the product can be followed by a another thin coat of easy sand without the fibers creating a smooth finish with a smaller profile.! But it would come down to cost. Personally if it was a great product that can be used for patch jobs with durabond or easysand if it came in bulk bags at $10.00 to $20.00 I would use it. Filling in seams with Durabond creates one strong seams imagine being able to seam and tape with durabond and top coat with easy sand without fibers. Theoretically I think it would create a strong patch and thin profile.! I’m not a drywaller but it took Schluter almost 30 years for their product to persuade tile installers to use and it is a proven product that actually works. I doubt drywallers going to give up any tape especially paper tape over this but I see its use for patches as well as you mentioned small holes... Any feedback on the patch techniques and correction would be appreciated..! It is a young product but I see it potential in limit areas..

Thanks for the input. I just wish I could find a way to test it, without risking failure on a customers job. I might test it in a garage for example, but it would take years to know for sure if it fails or not.

I agree. The inventor needs to demonstrate a bunch of testing before you can convince us on his product. His videos lack information in so many ways. He needs help with his video production bad! He should demonstrate how this product works in extreme heat/cold. A video with some kind of vibration/shaking test would be nice. He should definitely explain the science behind his product/taping & how it’s relevant to the use case scenario he claims it’s a better function for. I would be very interested in learning more why this would be a better method vs traditional.

Aloha Kilt Guy. Great test. Looks like the product is intended as a shortcut to increase productivity in taping which will in turn makes unlicensed, inexperienced, uneducated and uninsured drywall contractors more money. The product might be good in filling a large hole caused from a door knob or a pissed off drunken fist. The fibers are intended to hold the mud together so it won't ozzzz out of the hole. While it might increase the joint in strength, the surrounding drywall is still weak. Your test proves this. Houses shift in one way or another over time. There is auto/wood bondo out on the market with a similar theory. The concept is also used to make surf boards and in the marine industry where the surrounding surface to be sanded is rock hard unlike drywall. I have used it to patch holes in wood. It is very difficult to sand. Once it is dry, the surface does not match the other areas of the wood surrounding the hole. Bottom line from my experience as a painter, if drywall is over sanded, flashing will be seen everywhere no matter how expensive the paint is. When this happens, it won't matter what the drywall joints look like. This where the expression "Blame it on the PAINTER comes in". Another thing to consider is your lungs and eyeballs. Drywall dust sucks all by itself. Imagine drywall dust packed with fibers that go into your eyes and lungs every day and stick like slivers. Imagine all the dust and fiber that will be left for the remaining trades on a job site to ingest. Kind of makes you want to take off your shirt and Kilt and go to work naked tomorrow. Once guys like you and me are gone, the cat, breast feeding mothers, and infant children will continue to ingest the fallout. If the wheel ain't broke, don't fix it. Your old school ways get my work on the cover of magazines for 1 reason only...................they are tried, tested, proven and applied by someone like you who has vast knowledge and countless hours of experience. This new product will help Festool sell more of their HEPA vac's which cost more than medical insurance and fall apart as soon as one brings them to a jobsite. Great test and as always, my professional respects to drywall and painting people who take pride in their work.

It looks like 1/8" chopped strand fiberglass. In boat repairs we use it for thickening & strengthening epoxy & polyester resin for filling. It should work with mud, however, when you sand it, the dust will make you itch. As an amateur newbee "drywaller" and a much more experienced fiberglasser DIYer, I'll pass on it and use tape. The time saved in not using tape will be more than lost in trying to get rid of the itch.

Hang them horizontally on the other side using three 8' boards so that you can test it on butt joints too. Let it sit until summer when the humidity starts getting bad, see if anything cracks.

This is not an acceptable solution from professionals, I’m sure, and should generate some negative comments. But, for small areas where the paper has pulled away on one side, I have used a syringe and shot Titebond glue under the tape then pressed out any excess. I next clamped a. smooth, straight and level board (protected with painter’s tape or plastic wrap) to the repaired area until the glue dried. If unable to clamp, use a 2x4 or similar leveraged against the flat board to exert pressure. Apply a small bit of drywall compound or sparkle (or even caulk) to any remaining edge to level it. It’s not the “right” way to make the repair, but it actually works!

Just put some fiberglass insulation in your mud. It looks like that anyways, all blended up.

What advice would you give on promoting a business to someone who's just starting

There’s no one simple thing. It’s actually fairly complex and I plan to do a video and/or course about that soon. Probably including an e-book people can purchase.

It seems to me that both compression and tension stresses are needed to simulate the effects of summer heating and winter cooling on dry wall joints.

Kilt, I don't trust it. I'm not liking the fact that I need to give more space between joints. Framing spacing will have to factor in too, each extra 1/8th in I lose one half inch to every 5 sheets, I would have to use nailers along the studs to make the difference. That joint will crack probably the next day or two. I experimented with fiberglass in my mud many years ago and you can't seem to get rid off the strands while lightly sanding, even with a finer fiberglass mix. For some reason they had me do mud and tape with the fiberglass mix only in bathrooms many years ago. I'm passing up on this one.

I think the idea is to use it only for the base layer, then float with regular mud so there’s no fibers when sanding

Guy I"M not opposed to trying something new; but if something has proven to work why change. As the saying goes if it is not broken don't touch it. I will stick with the traditional method of taping

Don’t think they do yet. Check out their website at liagle.ca/

@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY yeah checking the website prompted my comment. Their website is, umm, less than complete. It's nice and pretty. But they're selling something (I guess), and they won't tell you how much it costs or where to get it. I was also interested in the MSDS. If you sand it are fiberglass shards going everywhere?

It’s a gimmick. There isn’t enough thickness in a tape joint for this type of additive. We used the same theory in stucco base coats such as 1 - raw asbestos (showing my age here) 40 years ago 2 - hedman fibres 30 years ago 3 - fibre shorts ( short fibreglass strands) which really gums up a mixer in short order. 20 years ago The reason these worked was there was enough depth for the reinforcing matrix of fibres to work. Tape joints simply don’t have the depth or the material strength. Another thing to note: I don’t care what you use. If there’s structural movement (torsion or shrinkage) you will get cracking. I’ve told this to builders for years. 7/8” of cement (stucco) will not hold your building together

I've worked heavy construction for 30 years... fiberglass reinforced concrete does work well.... it's still used with rebar.... it's for extreme strength jobs.,..an extreme bitch to work with....I would think this product would be great for first fill coat and tape coat,.no tape...I wouldn't do....final coat would be stupid... unless you like hairy mud joints....I don't judge.,.😂
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY3 жыл бұрын
Well the inventor says it's only for the first, fill/tape coat anyway, so even he doesn't recommend top coating with it.
