Clive Barker's Undying was a great game a suitably spooky worth playing. Having played Dead Space 1 and 2 before playing Doom 3, my experience with Doom 3 was a huge disappointment and I felt it brought nothing new to the table, other the graphics, over the superior Doom 1 and 2. My experience with Dead Space showed me how iD could have potentially re-invigorated the horror action. Instead they made Doom 2 with Audio files and Emails whose only purpose was to get combination code to weapon lockers.

Personally, the first appearance of the Flood in Halo:CE freaked me out. Here I am, filling alien stomachs with their recommended daily serving of hot lead, when I’m stopped by a freaked-out Marine, a dead body that nearly falls on me, and the final recording of another trooper’s helmet. Halo should have a spin-off horror game.

My favorite horror game is the SNES clocktower. It is a point and click adventure horror game that involves being stalked through a mansion by a monster. A lot of the game is randomized. Item placements can differ from run to run. If you hide somewhere, depending on how good or bad of a hiding spot it is, the enemy has a higher or lower chance of checking that spot if he's actively chasing you. If you get away from the enemy, sometimes he will patrol, and sometimes he will hide somewhere on you, starting the chase right back up again if you happen to get unlucky and search for items where he happened to hide. The game also has plenty of other hazards to look out for, including random death traps you need to button mash to get away from and puzzles that kill you if you don't figure out the solution fast enough.

I would highly recommend you play on SGS a game called Cry of Fear, it's for sure the scariest game for me, and since i watch all of yours SGS videos, i would love to see the reaction of Davis and Jesse when some really weird stuff happens in that game, and even though its an older horror game, the game still stand to this day as one of the best indie horror games

Now Dead Space 2’s hardcore mode with limiting the saves to three total, and Dead Space 3 upping the danger even more are stupid hard lol

I remember I got fairly far in the first one on whatever that hardest difficulty was, but I just couldn't beat it, or at least decided it wasn't worth it for my sanity. The ones you're mentioning sound like the hardest mode in Outlast, which was permadeath or something like that. I remember I tried a few times but was like, This just ain't worth it.

A lot of people List Silent Hill 2 as the best in the series, and rightly so. I love a well made psychological horror, and for the most part, Silent Hill gets it. But as personal tastes go, Silent Hill 3 really taps into my personal fears more than 2 does. I can relate to Heather more than James, and that sympathy is why I find the game so enjoyably horrific.

Ah, dead space... I remember my very own experience with the game. I was kinda young, likely around 18 when I first brought it home. Ran downstairs to my PS3, popped out the game in there already, slotted Dead Space in and immediately needed to use the restroom. So I hit the buttons to make it start up while I was away, and off I went. As I was upstairs, I could hear the game through the VENTS. In a blind panic, I hurried my business and ran back downstairs as fast as I could. Didn't want my parents waking up to see me playing a supposedly scary game. Well, as I was getting back downstairs, I heard Nicole. "Twinkle, twinkle little star... How I wonder what you are... Up above the world so high, like a diamond in the sky..." And as I was listening, I remember saying "This isn't right. All I'm seeing is a ship. "When the blazing sun is gone" Oh fuck that's a dead body. THAT SHIT IS A DEAD BODY WITH BLOOD EVERYWHERE. AND THAT ONE IS CUT UP. "When the nothing shines upon *HELLO FIRST SCARE.* " OH FOR FUCKS SAKES THE HELL IS THAT THING!? "When you shine your little light, twinkle twinkle all the night" By this point, I had seen what was going on, and since Dead Space was my first ever horror game? I was crapping my pants at the stuff I was seeing. "Then the traveller in the dark *HI AGAIN* Thanks you for your little spark *AND AGAIN* Could not see which way to go *AND HELLO DEATH MONTAGE.*" I just kinda sat there, shaking, grabbed my controller and started a game up. I was horrified by it. I loved it. But nothing will beat when I got to the Church of Unitology, and as I stepped off that tram... "Twinkle, twinkle little star... How I wonder what you are..." And at that moment, I did shit myself. I walked up that ramp like it could collapse at any moment. I shut myself in the closet right before the door you're supposed to enter. And had a fifteen minute long argument with myself about opening the door, which ended with "LOOK, STONEHEART. EITHER WE SIT HERE IN THE SPOOKY CLOSET WHERE THERE IS A VENT RIGHT ABOVE YOU AND YOU CAN GET ATTACKED AT ANY MOMENT, OR YOU GET YOUR ASS OUT THAT DOOR, YOU FACE YOUR FEAR LIKE A MAN, AND YOU ADVANCE THE STORY." Mysterious Jojo That probably comes from you not being around when the lore started popping up. Then the videos, then the game, and then the IRL murder from those 2 girls. My dad is a big Resident Evil fan, so I bought Resident Evil 7 to play with him. It was the first time I ever saw him jump at anything. After hatcheting your wife, when she comes out of the side to cut off your arm, my dad gasped and fumbled with the controller, hitting the shoulder buttons over and over again. He's one of those dad's who you never see scared, or cry, especially not in front of their kid(s) so it was funny for me to see him spooked.

Woo! Thanks for acknowledging ZAMN. That game gave me nightmares as a kid to the point where I hid the cartridge from my mother. Years later, I can actually appreciate the B movie style the game took. It's a great game, but an absolute pain to attempt completing. At some point (probably halfway through) you're bound to slip up and then it's game over. My advice is to pause the game, let nerves settle, grab some food, and relax a bit. Charging through the game without a break otherwise is insane. Hopefully you (and maybe a pal) can try finishing ZAMN at some point. Or at least see how far you can get.

Honestly, this was a terrible list. I respect your opinion and all, but come on. Alone in the Dark isn't scary, but fair enough; it's a horror game. Zombies Ate My Neighbors is definitely not scary. Slender: The Eight Pages is a pathetic horror game that made jumpscare culture more popular, where the focus on jumpscares is more important than actual horror and atmosphere. Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Outlast, SOMA and Alien: Isolation easily deserve to be there instead. TwistedMetal - Black is another game that isn't scary. DOOM III is more action than horror. Resident Evil 7 is finally a legit scary game on this list, even though it's not THAT scary. I'm sure it's terrifying in VR, though. The Last of Us is definitely not a scary game, so that's another useless entry on this list. Eternal Darkness is only the second legit scary game on this list. Wow. Resident Evil HD is a good game, and it's scary. Well done. Dead Space has great atmosphere, and I'd definitely call it a scary game, even though it becomes very easy and action-oriented after a while. So, that's four "scary" games on a top 10 list. Heck, a lot of these aren't even horror. Sorry, but this list was disappointing, in my opinion, but you're welcome to yours.

Tomiply As a serious Slenderman lore fan, I'm sad that I have to seriously hardcore agree with you. Remember how he mentioned Marble Hornets? I encourage you to go find a playlist (don't just use the channel) and watch that. It's amazing. It even eventually got DVDs. More people need to know the character for its stories and web series, instead of its cashgrab games.

Eternal Darkness is a game which made me glad I owned a Nintendo Gamecube. ( it was an exclusive title ) That part where the game makes it look like you're deleting your game made me jump out of my chair, only to discover it was only fake and my saved games were still stored safely. Not really one for scary games, but I do have a soft spot that can make you feel unnerved. Now I know it probably has been mentioned a lot already, but a big shout for the very first Silent Hill. I picked it up hearing it was survival horror like Resident Evil 2. What I found was something far more enthralling then a viral zombie outbreak. You are an every day average man, Harry Mason. He is not a cop, soldier or any sort of fighter. Heck he wouldn't have even remained if it wasn't for his adopted daughter going missing somewhere in Silent Hill. You see Harry isn't the most fit person. He can get fatigued when running around too much. It made things really hairy when being attacked by creatures. This made the radio he carried super helpful. When it made noise you would instantly know when to slow down. Trying not to alert the enemy and, more often then not, avoiding them. You can fight, but Harry isn't the best at that either. He's just a normal guy, trapped in a hellish demon town that's somehow connected to his daughter. And of course if we talk about playing a game that is unnerving ... I have to say doing the Homicidal run in Undertale. Just in how the game makes you feel bad, to horrible, to worse as you attempt to kill everything. You are not trying to stop a horrible demon, you ARE the demon. A game that lets you fill that dark wish but still makes you ponder and question your actions? Now that is a real deeply horrifying thing. I don't think I could fill a top 10, but I do have one more: Haunting starring Polterguy for the Genesis. I'll put it simply ... You are a ghost and you freak out a family so bad they abandon the house. Yes, that is all you do, but it does have some interesting strategy. There are plenty of crazy spooky animations designed to scare off the Sardini Family. For anyone looking for something different on the Genesis, it one out. Maybe I should try Dead Space, but in the mean time I loved the list! All good choices ^_^

I remember playing dead space on PS3 way back in 2009, got it after Christmas. Me and my crush (lol) at the time played it and oh boy, that was an experience. Once she left I played it properly and i was doing baby steps the whole way through. Saving every time I could & was generally to terrified to play it. But I struggled on & dead space was my first horror game I completed and one of the first platinum trophies I got on PS3.

Twisted Metal Black was such a good choice. When I was a kid, I got it because I loved the other games in the series, but for months on end I was just too scared by the box art alone to play it. The atmosphere and music are just so dark and hopeless, and they really paint the visual of truly being in a nightmare.

Ib is a charming free RPG maker horror puzzle game. The story, environment and characters all create a sinister, creepy vibe while also being interesting and not too stressful that wimps like me can't finish. I love it and still play it over and over.

On a list of games that are scary while not having to be considered horror, I would like to add The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. The gameplay is so simply that you are left with nothing but immersion and yhe feeling of the game world, and the game does such a great job in creating an interesting, eerie, and sometimes outright creepy atmoshpere. I loved every minute!

The original Silent Hill was probably the only game ever that actually gave me nightmares, especially Lisa's story. Imagine being trapped in that hellish world, only to realize that you are one of the monsters you are surrounded by.

I never cared for dead space, the atmosphere was great but that was it for me. You see a corpse, 99% of the time it comes back to life and jump scares you. Turn a dark corner, jump scare, open a door, jump scare. It was too stale for me, which makes me sad because I drooled over the atmosphere.

I used to play Resident Evil 2 on the N64 and I remember one part scaring the shit out of me. I remember screaming and pausing the game and walking out the room. The hallway in the police station with the boarded up windows had those arms that burst through.

Nice list, kinda coming from the same place, not many games scares me that much. But I had to wear my brown pants while playing Alien Isolation (PC version, with a headset). The alien atmosphere plus one terrifying xenomorph hunting for you, had me screaming.

Amnesia and Alien Isolation are among my tops and if you haven't looked at them, I highly recommend doing so. I've recently been playing through Soma and its pretty damn solid too. I'm surprised Dark Souls was not in the list. There was always a trepidation with progressing and the whole of the world just felt unsettling.

Nintendo 64 games used to scare me. Being all alone in the castle in Mario 64 scared me. When I had to go to the basement, I would hurry up down the stairs so I don't see the Boo at the end of the hallway. Banjo-Kazooie used to also scare me. Due to its hardware limitations, seeing the other room be completely dark creeped me out and I don't know, that was scarey for me, for some reason. I guess I was just a scared child.

bioshock has some pretty creepy moments. i can't remember if its in one or two, but theres a part where, you go and clear out the area of enemies before coming across a note. usually when you clear an area you know your good,and that no one's gonna attack you and your pretty much free to roam about willy nilly. so there i was with this false sense of security and decide to read the note, which turned out to be pretty long. after i finished reading it in the silence of the empty area i had cleared of enemies, i turned around to leave the area and then BOOM, standing behind me with his head cocked wearing a creepy rabbit mask, completely silent, was an enemy, just standing there, staring at me with dead eyes, silently, creepily, and oh so grossly. the initial shock of him being there in the first place hit me first, and while he stood there doing nothing but staring at me, the feeling slowly passed, then he suddenly jumped at me and attacked, i shit my pants again! so i shot the living hell out of him and finished him off. creepy i thought, but then another wave of terror seeped its way into my brain as i suddenly thought ''was he standing there behind me the whole time i was reading that note?! WTF!!!'' cue spine shivers, and intense feeling off ''eurgh''. it was one of the best moments in a bioshock game next to the ol' ''would you kindly beat my brains in'' moment, and one i'll never forget.

Hell yeah... Doom 3 is so criminally underrated. I think if you expect it to be fast paced, run and gun, sure, you're gonna be disappointed. But go in, expecting a survival horror in the Doom universe and you're gonna have a great time!

I have played alot of horror games recently and I wanted to say I think SOMA is criminally underrated. Anyone who hasn't played it should definently check it out, SOMA is scary in not only a traditional sense (as in scary monsters and creepy atmosphere) but SOMA explores dark, depressing and disturbing themes. It has possibly one of the best written stories in a game ever. I dont want to talk to much about it to avoid spoiling it. (the story is best played blind, I personally wouldnt look up to much info) But if your reading this and haven't played it, definitely check it out.
