It's time for a nostalgia trip with my Ape Escape review! A classic collect-a-thon game where we take a look to see if it deserves a reboot.
Subscribe: bit.ly/SubscribeThatOneVideoGamer
Ape Escape has a simple premise: capture the escaped apes. Okay there's a bit more to it like capturing them in different time periods, some bromance in between, and making your own version of a blocky Planet of the Apes. Ape Escape holds the title of being one of the first video games to use both analog sticks while playing, and who knew that would catch on right?
Let me know what you thought about my Ape Escape review!

YES!! YES!! YES!! YES!!! YES!!!! Idk who I would have to talk to or go to that could actually make an Ape Escape remake for the PS4 possible, but if anyone reads this that can actually make that happen.... Plz plz plz plz plz do a remake of the original Ape Escape game on PS1 for the PS4!!!!!? That would sell like crazy and would undoubtedly be as fun as the PS1 original and would be interesting to see in today's graphics!!!!!!! I desperately hope it happens!

09:28 Jirard: "I think if Specter really wnated to dominate humanity, he could just make games as cool and experimental as this one, until our brains rot and we all rely on apes for everything." Uh...Jirard? Believe it or not but that's the plot of Ape Escape Academy 2.

...son of a gun, you're right! Specter literally establishes world domination by inventing Hearthstone! Oh god he's going to fund his campaign through the medium of CARD PACKS! WE'RE DOOMED! ...nope, wait, he alienated his playerbase with several expansions of progressively more OP cards, while making it impossible to play older cards in Ranked. Nevermind, his plans are thwarted by his own hubris.

When I got a job one of the first things I did was buy a new copy of this game and beat it again. I remember having the dorkiest smile on my face while doing it too. This is a HUGE childhood favorite of mine! I spent hours exploring the detailed and well-crafted levels as I hunted the monkeys and tackled the time attacks. I remember feeling like a true badass as I climbed the ranks of the boxing minigame. My stepbrother and I tore up some Galaxy Monkey together. I LOVED the races with Jake, they got my adrenaline pumping, I worked so hard to master those routes to finally defeat him, my tiny hands spinning the analog stick to use the gadgets as quick as him. And I was SO compelled to fill out that Monkey Book and read about every monkey. This game was so well-made. My childhood self was enamored by it and to this day I still frequently get the title screen theme stuck in my head, the same theme that plays when you finally see Spike running to meet his friends again at the end of the game.

From the bottom of my heart I thank you so much for playing Ape Escape. I was given this game as a kid by my older half brothers and remember my parents having to go buy a Dualshock controller just to play it. It was the first game I was able to complete on my own without any help as a kid (The second being FF IX) and poured hours into it. I still have that same copy in it's box and replay it when I want to listen to the OST. I wish Sony made a remaster like they did with Crash and Spyro. I recommend playing Ape Escape 2 & 3, especially 3, I'm sure you'll love it if you liked the first one. :)

I never owned Ape Escape, but I rented it a few times as a little kid back in the days of Blockbuster and was always kind of fascinated by it, although I was too young and inexperienced to be very good at video games back then so I'd always get stuck before making it too far through the game. I've always rather wanted to go back to it someday, and seeing this review gives me a renewed enthusiasm to do so.

They had this game for a £1 rental at Blockbuster when everything else was £3 or more. That's because they only had the demo disk, not the full thing. Except it wasn't a demo. It WAS the full thing. I made sure to complete this before telling them. I remember enjoying the crap out of this, mostly because of the control scheme. It was so fun learning how the analogue sticks were used in various situations. Ive not played a game that did what this game did since.

I remember playing Ape Escape on a demo disc, and finding the controls REALLY frustrating for maybe 20 minutes. But the game was so fun, so I kept playing. I got the hang of the controls by the end of the demo, and played it over about three times. The controls were really novel! This was before the modern FPS, or giving the player camera control with an analog stick...the closest we had was Golden Eye.

Honestly it's only better because of Specter. He's just superior to the US dub in every conceivable way.

Very much so. He's really sinister in the PAL dub and it makes him genuinely a threat.

Everytime I hear the American dub, it makes me dislike the game more. Because the superior game doesn't seem readily available.

It's nice to see there's a lot of people who still like this game. I unfortunatedly find myself unable to get any of my friends to even touch the game.

YYYYYYESS!!!!!!! This is my favorite game of all time!!! I never would have expected a video on it from someone like Jirard to be made, I always thought the game was too obscure, I'm so happy right now!!!!! XD Loved the video!!!!!

Remember it taking me a good while to learn how to just move in this game due to me always using the d-pad and having never used the analogue sticks before on the PS1

I remember playing this game over at an old friend's place and how much fun it looked at the time but I also remember that 10 year old me had a really hard time grasping the concept of using both control sticks since I had only ever been used to using one on the N64. I should go back and give it another go.

It makes me inexplicably happy that you gave one of my most favorite games of all time a positive rating. Though I totally respect others' opinions, I always get nervous when asking people about Ape Escape cuz of the rough graphics or weird story/overall oddity of the game. So thanks, Jirard, for reviewing this game. ............You should play Ape Escape 2. Or Pumped and Primed. P&P is a good party game.
