when I was fifteen, I was working a lot, I was kicked out of high school. so as I was working a lot I had a used twin reverb and telecaster, so I named my cats Reverb and Tele, and hearing you say you with have Reverb or you don't have Reverb made me think fondly of Reverb and Tele, Kind of off topic but I love you guys! Keep up the good entertaining work and invite me on the show I need a vacation or holiday.

Back when I started playing guitar, a friend of mine picked up a Marshall MG15CDR that someone threw away, he replaced the power plug and gave it to me. Have always thought it was broken or something, because whenever I move or shake the amp, it produces weird, thunderous like noises. Only after I got back into playing guitar again in recent years and getting more serious on learning guitar stuffs in general, that I've learnt that there's an actual spring tank inside of it that produces the reverb.

Yet another timely episode. I just bought a little verb pedal yesterday. Was inspired by Ariel Posen and one or two others, to look for something that makes some nice noises beyond the reverb on my amps (one of which has proper spring verb). Had to be small enough, and top-mount jacks, to tuck into a corner on an SA250, and be a deliberate mood effect.

That bloody awesome guys. I really like messing around with reverb, I have a basic cheap behringer DR600, great pedal for its price range, on a room setting, going through the loop in the back of my amp, and that is on its own built in Reverb. On spring..... does give a bolder thickness to the reverb. Thanks again guys.

I had trouble figuring out how not to lose the "character" of delays like Echoplex and DMM when run into some of these bigger reverb sounds. Then I discovered running delay and reverb in parallel, and I've become a big fan. Thanks to Dan for The Wetter Box! What a great piece of kit that allows you to blend delays and reverbs together without the delay getting washed out in the reverb.

I was literally just asked this same question a couple days ago! I was showing a mate my new surfy bear metal and was about to plug into my deluxe reverb. Both are spring reverbs, both have full sized tanks but sound completely different from each other. It helps tremendously to be able to set and forget a moderate amount of reverb up on the dr for my basic/clean tone and then switch to the surfy bear for when I want to cruise on down to drip city.

Brilliant episode guys. Yeah, it was annoying that we primarily experienced and encountered reverb within amps, but as you said, Digital Reverb was around in rack formats. I think from 1985 for PA's and home recording there were things like the Yamaha SPX-90. However, the REX-50 was a guitar based version from 1986 which fitted perfectly on top of an amp, and had the option of MIDI and standard Footswitches. I've got my original unit and still use it. As you said, there were other Multi-FX available, especially the BOSS mini rack stuff and it was widely used, well around the Midlands it was anyway. I also sold them.

Great tones, and a variety of awesome sounding reverbs. I've been using plugin reverbs lately when recording because I find that using the same reverb on multiple instruments helps "glue" the track together and make it sound like one cohesive thing.

Bryan, varying the length of the predelay is an engineer’s secret weapon. 1. It increase the apparent size of the reverb without actually lengthen the amount of decay and 2. It actually adds clarity to the original signal by creating separation between the two. For me, the default starting point for predelay is 90ms. Give it a try!

I like having reverb on an expression pedal, so I can 'inject' it into the sound as and when, leave the odd note of a solo just hanging in space... generally, I like it dry, all the gain dynamics detailed and focused. But... LOVE the Accutronics in a couple of me amps, love the cheap trashy spring reverb in another, love the beautifully articulate digital reverbs, the cavernous hall... I have quite a few options, but STILL plan to add more horses for my various courses.... Great show as always guys - love how you climb into the corners of the anorak! We all need you... Pro tip for spring reverbs that sound tinny: a drop of super glue on the transducers to keep them from rattling, weather stripping to mount the tank for extra shock absorbtion, cardboard underneath and foam/cloth around the tank (if it's not already in a pencil case bag.)Can turn a dinky verb into something useable.

Great to have you guys back! The other thing to me about pedal reverb is that, to my ears, spring reverbs can have a sort of non-linear response where they get exponentially louder the harder you hit them, while to my ears the car majority of pedal reverbs have a more linear response (which can give you more reverb when playing more delicately). And I think the siding reverb EQ can be relatively specific...

you cannot control the length of an amp spring, just the intensity. Thats why you need something that gives air around individual notes. For that you need an early reflection reverb like a Topanga or just a simple very short delay low in the mix. Start with that and add yr amp reverb according to playing situation.

The small room reverb is such a great alternative to the usual hall/plate type reverb. Reminds me of some Brian May solos where even though the track is quite sonically dense/complex, the guitar pokes out of the mix and makes you feel like you are standing next to Brian in the studio. It 'breaks the 4th wall' of a studio album and I love it - thanks for showing us this guys! 😁

The reason I bought the Fender Tre-verb pedal is that I was using the FX loop in my amp, and the reverb in the amp was BEFORE the loop. I prefer delay after pre-amp drive and before reverb, so it had to come from a pedal in the loop. In addition, the Super Sonic 22 amp I was using has a noisy pre-amp so I wanted a noise gate in the loop. The amp reverb before the loop would get its trails chopped off by the noise gate, so I'd go Loop Out - Modulation - Noise Gate - Delay - Reverb - Trem - Loop In.

the biggest challenge for me is trying to find the one reverb that produces the best harmonic content with my particular tone (or guitar I'm playing that day). I find a lot of spring reverbs sound great with certain guitars of mine and terrible with others, especially when it comes to creating that complimentary harmonic content, that lush velvet goodness that makes you ooze. so for me, having a few reverb pedals is a must in my "tool kit of tones", and ultimately gives me more creative freedom, creates more space to explore that balance of realism and dreamland.

I kind of want to build a board of mostly reverbs. A digital multi-verb into amp spring reverb is killer.

TPS been cooking vegetarian fender style sandwiches, i am still waiting for a big juicy dirt amp burger with lots of fried fuzz/od pedals and a milkshake with modulation pedals to go.

I built a Princeton Reverb years ago. Not sure I’ve ever turned the Reverb knob past 5 despite having a Dwell knob - otherwise I’d drown 😜. However, I got a Walrus Fathom yesterday and the wide range of sounds that pedal can produce is fabulous. It does NOT do spring reverb, but it does so many other wonderful things and you have so much control.

Had to watch the show again because Friday I was distracted by the delivery of my Harmonious Monk! SWEET! About Dan's appreciation for short reverb pans; I've seen them with 2 springs and some with 4, and yes, the latter sound "fuller" while retaining the quick response. Trying to remember...the pan in the Roland Space Echo might have more than 2.

Apart from distortion and real spring reverb, TC Electronics Plethora X5 does all this and more and you can swap the order around.

I was always thinking "what is it with Dans Playing?" something is so different and new. But in this episode it really really shines and shows how unique your style is. Amazing chord voicings and dynamics. Super interesting! You guys are not only complete pedal nerds, but also superb players! Keep on rocking dudes :)

Mick: Jimmy Barnes Simply the Best. Salutations to Dan as well. Great video!!! My reverb pedal doesn't have a pre-delay, so I have a delay pedal just before the reverb, despite it's not the same thing.

Hello boys, from Bloomington, Indiana. As a recovering recording engineer, I love the use of reverb. It’s a great tool for creating space. One question I wished you had touched on….where does (guitarist’s) reverb fit in a LIVE setting? For me, I rarely use reverb on my live gigging pedal board, just delay if I need to create a bit of “float.” The size/space of the venue imparts its own reflections on the sound, and onboard reverb can (potentially) make your sound less clear and present. For example, I play in my church band. Many contemporary Christian recordings today have an “arena” sound, so guys at church think they have to impart that reverb wash in a live setting, then they wonder why my Tele-OD-delay with about 130ms/4 repeats sounds so huge through the PA.

Sometimes I love reverb and others I can't stand it. At the moment I like a bit of ambient wash but I have started experimenting with reverb pedals. Currently I have a Fender Treverb sitting on my board doing double duties.
