On the nose there. The frets, fair enough. The saddles? well if you must. The wiring though... if the switch is broken, sure replace it, but the whole loom? The tone is significantly different to my ears (such as they are) and I preferred the throaty growl those vintage pots and wiring had. The only reason to buy a vintage guitar is that its parts have aged. To spend that premium then replace the vintage parts? Hey it's his guitar, money, etc. and it's all very interesting to indulge that geekery. I just can't help feeling he's made the original sound like the copy.

One thing that really amazes me with both 'Dan and Micks' vintage guitar journeys is - When they both got the guitar of their dreams in there hands both suddenly seemed to take the next step up in playing standard. While I think a lot of the tone comes from the vintage instrument and pickups, I also think it is the affinity and connection to such an instrument that actually pushes us forward to more inspired playing. (At least this is what I get to hear when Dan and Mick play the instruments of their dreams)

My takeaway from these blogs is that quality of communication to a great luthier is perhaps more important than new, vintage, cheap or expensive. The transfer of the sound and feel in the players head to a great luthier that understands what changes to implement.

Risking to teach the pope how to pray, just my hint: Measure the CAPACITOR of the old electronics. It is the more probable culprit, than the pots...Other: the more the turns in the bobin are paralel with each other, the more wil be the parasitic capacitance between the turns, and your treble goes to the drain. So, when rolling a pickup, make the turns distribuition more random as possible. Remember those old radio inductors. Just a hint.....

I know it's all a matter of taste, but I really think those titanium saddles ruined the sound and made it somehow generic sounding.

I'm not a fan of vintage guitars. I'm not a fan of factory made guitars. I prefer a partscaster that I put together with pieces that I specifically want and not What was decided on by a large Factory hierarchy. But I'm confused as to what went on in this video. Dan, I'm not trying to be critical. I have an honest question that I don't quite understand what happened here. The video opened 7 years ago with your being over the moon happy with the sound you were getting from that 65 Tele. You were ecstatic. Then we move to today where you have the guitar refreted, something actually required no criticism, then you change out all the electronics, and then you have the neck pickup rewired. So it seemed to me that the only thing that hadn't been changed was the body. If you had taken a new Tele body of the same wood species bolted on a new neck added the same Electronics and put in a new set of pickups, to your liking, how different would the Ultimate Sound be compared to that '65 heavily modified Tele? I'm questioning whether someone needs to actually buy a vintage instrument or can get the same or very close to the same sound and feel with the changes that you made in this video. I'm not against people collecting vintage instruments as an investment. But if you wanted to reach a particular sound why not just pick out new parts and have them assembled by your luthier and save a lot of money and get exactly what you want?

Just got my parts Tele put back together, this time with a rosewood neck and I’m loving it. Very hard to avoid making all your guitars similar. You’ve got to just embrace how their differences make you play differently and roll with it. Sounds great, Dan!

100%. I have quite a few teles including 2 Partscasters. One with rosewood neck and for the longest time I didn’t play it much because it isn’t as bright sounding as my others and doesn’t quite twang the same. But lately I’m just enjoying the fact it offers a slightly different tone and rolling with it.

As jazz guy that uses the neck pickup on the tele almost exclusively, I was really disappointed in the neck tone initially. When I got to the portion of the video where you had the pickup rewound I was so excited to see how you addressed this. It sounds so alive now! Congratulations on this beautiful instrument! Now I want to hear you play more of those Pat Martino licks you mentioned in the last episode!

The first time I met Adrian Ingram at Leeds college of music, when I did the Ba hons jazz studies, I was so surprised he used a tele not a jazz box. He got a fantastic jazz tone.

disconnect neck from tone pot is a GEM of a mod...do it to all my Tele's...even my CS and LSL sound better....I have Ask Zach to thank. It even brightens nicely...the middle position. Great video here!

Aged Body wood or Aged Neck? That's what I don't understand also. When so much was changed, then what exactly made you know ... when you first played it that - "This is the one??" How close could someone get to yellow 65 if they bought the same body wood (same weight), same 21 fret neck, and copied your critical Tone upgrades?? Make vid how close.. 92%, 97%, 99% plus gear can we nail the sound?? Oh yeah, BTW. Dan should have a pick up builder !00% copy Reds bridge pick up and then market Dan's "Signature Red T-Bridge" ?? At some level I find the whole conversation about vintage instruments and their value to be ridiculous. I totally understand about certain examples of instruments being preserved as a way to chart the history and innovations of a particular product, but beyond that small number of instruments being set aside - these things were made to be PLAYED. And I'm sorry , but most of what the vintage musical instrument industry is selling to the public is nothing but nostalgia and fantasy, at prices that are just beyond bananas. There is really nothing that special about vintage instruments on the whole, and the overall quality being produced NOW is far, far superior and consistent. I would take a new, American-made PRS or Gibson or Fender over a vintage "holy relic" any day of the week and twice on Sunday. In my view, the ONLY thing vintage guitars have over new ones is old-growth wood. That's it. And even then, the quality was so uneven that even that statement is only partially true. Spend your money wisely on a good quality new guitar and you'll be better for it, because you're never going to sound like Hendrix anyway. Peace.

Picked up a 2017 NAMM Fender Custom Shop ‘59 Telecaster with matching hand-wired Fender CS Champ both in relic Olympic white. I went on a tele saddle journey, purchased around 12 different brands, metals, and types- Dan kindly shared the details about KTS in a Monday stream. The KTS saddles will never leave my tele. Apparently the KTS saddles were a commission build for a builder in Texas.I believe KTS is not longer making them tho.

I've got a '63 Strat I bought in 1987 at a very low price. The previous owner, in a crazy tonequest, had stripped of the finish so the guitar could "breathe" better.

Love this Dan. I have been searching a long time for a 60s SG Junior just like yours. Recently I have been buying teles and P90 guitars. Love them single coils. I was looking for a 60s SG Junior. I don't need two pickups. Buddy at work asked me if I could look at a guitar for him. His father in law died a year ago. I did all the work to find out what it was (pot dating, serial, etc). I told him they probably are $6k on Reverb. It's a 1966 SG Special. So they decided that they didn't want to go through the hassle. They said “maybe I would like it?” I told them I had limited funds in my guitar bank. I just bought it for $3k from them today. It's even better than what I thought. Literally all original and other than the tetanus threatening strings, it is perfect. Cannot wait to get it home and restring it.

I looked into player grade vintage guitars myself when I was looking for my tele, but they were all too pricey. I'm not even talking about "hot" years. Even a '68 maple cap went for 8/9k Euro and those used to be the "affordable ones". Pre-CBS era was straight into double digits, big time. In the end was looking for a keeper to play fearlessly but top notch quality, so I went with a high tier handmade one. Still cheaper than vintage and CS. I would still hop on a good player grade vintage at the right price tho' :P

Maybe it's just me but what is the point in buying a guitar because you think that the sound it's just it and then changing things with the result of changing the sound which was the primary reason why you bought it?? I just don't get it though, you get a guitar you've played and loved, get it, and than just start changing everything in it. Why not just replace the neck pickup altogether instead of cutting up the old one

I've got a 72 strat that has been refinished that one time had a floyd but had been put back to vintage trem and upgraded locking tuners and SS frets and a bone nut and I only paid $1800 for it and it's my very best strat of all time.

Hey Dan! Since you're having fun experimenting with your Tele's you should try the "reverse control plate" on one of them, the Custom Shop is doing this on some of their new Winter Masterbuilt Collection. Read the Reverb article about it by Joel Handley. It goes Volume, Tone, Selector Switch instead of Selector, Volume, Tone and makes it so much easier for pinky volume swells and the selector will never get in your way! Beauty Guitar and great video, been waiting for this for a long time!

What a great journey. Thanks for having us along for the experience. Each change made a difference but i think, in this context, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. I can see how these physical changes to the Tele have emotional impact on Dan and he plays more freely/expressive when he's not wrestling with the guitar trying to coax "the sound" out of the guitar. Another great example of how feeling it is as important as hearing it. It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that......certain je ne sais quoi. Great Episode, Thanks!

I have a few old guitars, some refinished, some not and I've never understood the "halving the value". The refinished ones sound play just as well and are just bargains in my eyes! Replaced hardwear, pickups or electronics are a much bigger deal in my eyes...

I bought a '68 Tele in 1968 for $298.00. It got stolen, unfortunately. A guitarist turned bassist sold me his '68 Tele for $200.00. I still have it. It definitely is "player grade". It has the original blonde finish and a '78 maple neck. The original maple neck's frets were shot. Yes, IT IS MY GUITAR!!!

The value of a old guitar is such an arbitrary thing. It might be a player grade and had some work done but if a famous player actually owned it and played it, the value would go through the roof.

your performance on a guitar is the most important, not the guitar. I have an old fender, but after some time I tried a chinese guitar (strat model), and what a wonderfull guitar . I payed 250 £! and my old fender is now sold. Lot a people on the net is now talking about wonderfull guitars from china, so talking about old fenders is nothing els but: MARKeETING

I tried at least 20 different sets on Red back in the day and I liked titanium best. Pickup was not potted 👍
