I've owned both... an original '64 Princeton, and a Deluxe from the first year of reissue, and absolutely loved what each did in their own way. An experiment you may wan to try, and one which I found extremely gratifying, is to plug each amp into different speaker cabinets. Try it and you'll find an even broader perspective of the tonal genius of the amps.

I'm so glad to see a Princeton on the show again! A 68 Custom PR has been my main (only) amp for years. Perfect for low-volume at home and gets nice and squishy playing with drums or a pit orchestra.

Great show guys! Having owned both Fender reissue '65 Deluxe Reverb and '65 Princeton Reverb amplifiers, I was never truly satisfied with the base tone of either amp, even after swapping speakers and doing the bright cap mod for the DR. For what you pay for these amps, the rather basic build quality, and the persistent cabinet rattle were simply unforgivable issues. I found my grail Blackface amp in the Mesa Boogie Fillmore 50, and of course, I know you can buy 2 Deluxe Reverbs and a Princeton Reverb for that 1 M/B amp, but I think the Fillmore is where it's at for all the tones you're able to pull out of these Fender amps, minus the tremolo effect.

Two things in my rig that never change---a single pickup '59 Gretsch Tennessean with a TV Jones Magna'Tron through an original '65 BFDR. Speaker is non-original, modded for reverb on both channels and regrilled a few years ago. Volume on 4. The sound is biblical.

Well done demo. I'm from the States and have a owned a few of both of these amps. I would always go with a Deluxe Reverb because they're a more versatile amp. Being able to use the non-reverb channel is also advantageous. I get why most prefer the Princeton more though. Both reissues sound decent. They really sounded best together. My favorite of these type of these amps are the Vibrolux Reverb & Pro Reverb. The 6L6 power tube is the deal for the Fender Reverb amps. The Pro & Vibrolux are the sweet spot.

My fav (and currently only) Princeton, an early ‘68 non-reverb version, really comes alive at ~7 on the volume. Treble at 6, bass at 3-3.5. It’s a quieter, less gainy amp than the reverb version due to one fewer 12AX7 stage in the preamp (not counting the reverb circuit). It still sounds really good dialed back to 5 too, which is how I use it with pedals, and at that setting makes a terrific home amp.

A month or so ago I received a replacement cabinet from MoJo Tone for my 76 Princeton. Slate gray with blue/white/silver grill, blue pilot light, added 14" tilt back legs and a 12" baffle for a Celestion G12-H 70th Anniversary. I'd put the speaker in the original cab and it sounded better (although it was a 10" cutout). When the new cab came in with a 12" baffle and made of wood rather than MDF it was a clincher. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! Been running my drives through the Princeton and modulation/time based effects through a '57 Custom Champ. Good Lord I've never gotten such a beautiful noise. My Princeton is non-verb and it stays clean to about 7 and just gets a tad into overdrive past that. I also keep the bass at 3 or below, treble at 5-7. Have several other amps to pair up for wet/dry/wet; 75 non-vibro Champ, VHT Special 6, Marshall Origin 5, Vox AC-10, Blackheart HD-15. Have a couple 40-50 watt amps but over the last decade or so I've been playing smaller amps.

0:04 question answered. Obvious answer, they have like 20 amps. No negativity intended, but imo you are disregarding an entire demographic of guitarists. Amp tones have their respective sounds at high volume but the same can be also said about low volume. I think you should demonstrate very low volume comparisons, ESPECIALLY when showing lower wattage amps. It is actually a very helpful experience!

I have been wanting/looking for a Princeton Reverb for a long time to fill the hole from Champ, Deluxe, Twin lineup that I have had for a long time. Hearing the comparison, I don't think I would really like a PR that much, it is thin/shrill compared to the DR. I wouldn't complain if one fell in my lap for a great price. If I get another amp it will probably be a DR.

The DR you can get away with playing at home without thinking your on the front at Stalingrad. I still want a hot rod though at some point in my life. You know, Mick, hearing this 2 years later through really nice headphones and a really nice digital-to-analog audio converter - and having been in Vox World as of late with the Victory Copper - I'm surprised at how much the Princeton sounds like a more polished AC15 to me. It's got that fuller-frequency Fender thing, the bass especially, and when you crank it, it doesn't turn into an infinite series of glass panes being smashed over your head like a Vox can, but there's still a midrange focus and considerable silvery Voxy chime to it. (And I suppose the Princeton, as the Fender circuit that changed least from tweed to brown/blonde to black, would also probably be the closest to a Vox circuit-wise; some of those tweeds, the smaller ones especially, were very much in the same neighborhood as an AC-something-or-other. Literally just enough circuitry to make a sound, nothing else.)

I didn't read all the responses, so somebody may have already mentioned this, but the 2 amps have different types of phase inverters. The Deluxe has a long tail pair phase inverter (LTPI), which is the same as the larger black face/silver face Fender amps. The Princeton has a cathodyne phase invertor, which is what the tweed Deluxe and some other tween amps used. The type of phase invertor (PI) has a large impact on the sound of the amp, especially when pushed into distortion, you can hear it clearly in this video. The distortion on the Princeton has a lot more hair on it. This is because there is an imbalance in the Princeton's PI, one leg of the AC signal gets chopped off more than the other leg (which may stay clean). The PI of the Deluxe is far more balanced, when it distorts it distorts in a much smoother way. Whether you prefer one over the other is a matter of personal preference, but I would say most people prefer the sound of the LTPI being pushed into distortion over the cathodyne. You mentioned that the speaker is breaking up, and it might be, but I think that is actually the PI you're hearing. There are some simple mods that you can do to the Princeton, (at least you can on vintage hand wired Princeton's, I don't know about these reissue amps) that will give the amp more headroom, and will smooth out the distortion when the PI does breakup. Again, that unpleasant distortion your hearing is probably coming from the PI, not the speaker.

Install NOS RCA 6v6GTA's and re-bias the amp to 26 + add a Celestion G10 gold - This did wonders for my Princeton. Warmly breaks up at 4.5 - Turns into a beast at 6. Rarely needs an overdrive pedal, just ride the guitar volume. When I do use an overdrive pedal, I start by setting tone controls to 0, then adjust to the room. My amp came biased from the factory pretty cold at 19, and adjusting made a huge difference in the overall tone.

You guys live in a different world when you're talking about headroom and power. For me, a Deluxe Reverb is a LOUD high-headroom amp. I couldn't dream of playing anything louder.
@ThatPedalShow
@ThatPedalShow 3 жыл бұрын
We understand, especially from a home / low volume environment. Thing is with the Deluxe, it stops getting louder when it starts to overdrive. Now depending on your drummer and the rest of the band, that might just not cut it. Mick here. Loads of people get by just fine, but I came up in crazy loud bands and the little Deluxe is just totally lost in an unmic’d pub band. Which is how I ended up with insane loud amps - 100 watt Boogies. Genuinely I don’t think the tone is any better at that volume, but the feel and response is sooooooo different it teaches you to play in a whole other way. And to my fault, it’s the only way I can play well. I’m learning though - starting to understand how to play quieter amps. Cheers!

Its all relative... these gents have a lot of 50-watt and 100-watt heads that would crush the Deluxe in a live setting. Compared to that these amps aren't that loud. Even with both amps cranked they barely got over 100db peak

Lovely video guys, with some killer tones and very inspired playing! There really is nothing more epic than a Fender guitar into a blackface amp! On my 1967 Deluxe Reverb, around 4 1/2 is the sweetspot for my Strat, around 4 for my Les Paul... strangely, when I had my reissue, it was actually a 1/2 to 3/4 turn lower. I do love a Princeton too... I had a very hard time deciding, but the Deluxe won out due to the greater headroom and cleaner bottom end from the 12" speaker, and I am VERY happy with it.

Splendid playing from both of you on this one! And a great episode. I use a vintage Princeton non-reverb with a Pyle driver speaker (maybe 50 watts or so) and a vintage 335, and it doesn't break up that easily. I have used it as the sole amp with my band (granted we are not that loud) and find putting it on a stand makes all the difference. Obviously if mic'd up it's great, but I've survived even without it. And I love that melting amp sound where it has nothing left to give. Both of those off-the-shelf reissues you use in this episode sound ace.

I’ve played many Deluxe over years. They’ve never been my favorite Fenders. The Princeton modified with a 12” help straighten up the “flubby” bass. The most interesting Deluxe RI that I played had the stock speaker BUT it had Mercury Magnets “iron.” I’m not an endorsee for Mercury; this was the best Deluxe I’ve ever played. Coupled with my (original) Zendrive was this was as as Dan would say, “magical” as Dan Bottom line… I feel safer with at least 40w of Fender!

Anyone else feel like we should set up a fund for Dan's hats? 10 vs 12 usually 3-4dB for the same power. Man put the G10A from Warehouse in that Princeton and it would killer! Bass power required is exponential in nature so 300 down uses 90% of the power, plus the rise in impedance of the driver requires less power as it goes up in frequency. 6V6 amps are always the best sounding to me!

What about a 65 twin reissue? Also, in Jeff Beck's final rig, it appears he was using the new tweed bassman amps sitting on custom fenderish extension cabs. What were those? Please have his tech on to answer all these questions we all have. We're the amps molded? If so, how? What were the speakers in his cabs? Thanks in advance!!!

I am in amp heaven these days, I have a 68 Custom reissue Princeton and she loves a Free the Tone Sov 2 , and yes with a strat a boss eq pedal can be beautiful. If I want a bit more oomph I add in a second amp - An original American Fender pro junior mark 1 does the trick. I have a Fender Concert 2 also, which has the most amazing clean to break up tone I have heard when pushed with a tubescreamer . Awesome tones would love to know your guys views on the Concert 2 amp

I don't know what anyone else has said. I'm at work being sneaky, but if you change the speakers for some sort of vitage celestion, the headroom and bottom end will be greater. Jensons sound great dirty, but clean isn't their game.

have had 2 princeton reverbs going all the way back to 1968. and as you can hear, they flub out in the bass frequencies pretty fast. sensitive. perhaps a different 10 inch speaker to even out the bass without so much mush. beautiful little amp, though. a classic. who knew, swap out the transformers and switch the 10 inch speaker for a 12 inch and voila, princeton delux.

After hearing both amps together on 10, Dan sounds like he needs a cigarette, "Well, it's been a while since I felt that" :-) Les Paul into the Princeton on 10, Fuzz pedal definitely not required. Love the tonal characteristics of the Princeton, set and forget and just play it.......

I’ve found that if you are micing your amp that a Princeton or deluxe of any shade…tweed-silver, will sound bigger than their high(er) wattage siblings. A deluxe of any color is extremely tough to beat. Unless super clean tone is what you’re after 🤷 Great video guys!

I was not expecting much, and it has Blown-me-away, and greatly Exceeded my expectations. That amp is Going-to-the Grave with me. oNe LovE from NYC

In addition to the Princeton love, I think that's the first time I've seen Dan with a big grin while playing the Jaguar. Besides the additional headroom / power, what sonic differences do you think a Hot Rod Deluxe has? It seems to me the two blackface amps have a more organic overdrive sound. That said, I've never been able to play the clean channel of an HRD maxed out.
@ThatPedalShow
@ThatPedalShow 3 жыл бұрын
We’d agree with that. The HRD is a completely different animal. Almost warrants a different brand on it we reckon.

I traded an Analogman Sunface and a few other cheap pedals for a Hot Rod Deluxe Soecial Edition that was rebuilt by a local amp builder into a 22 watt Hand-wired Princeton Reverb with a 12in speaker. Just glorious. McClostone Amps in Colorado, USA. It’s changed how I play guitar.

I'd post a picture of my Vintage Sound VS22 which is a deluxe style amp - and yes the normal channel with a brown mod is at 5 and the tremolo channel is at 5.5 - it doesn't really open up until 4.5 - both too loud for my band and likely most stages - I used it with a Fryette Power Station 2 and it makes it totally usable at more modest volumes. The PS2 is a ridiculously useful device for single stage amps - expensive but transformative for many applications.

Thanks guys for the great show! Technical Correction: the Princeton differs from the deluxe reverb (and the other larger blackface amps) in more ways than just the power supply and speaker. The Princeton uses a 12ax7 cathodyne phase inverter, while the others use a 12at7 long tail pair PI. Makes a big difference. Also the Princeton uses a bias modulating tremolo, which is a very “round” or “swampy” sound. The deluxe modulates the preamp signal using a bulb and a light dependent resistor giving it sharper peaks and valleys.

If “power supply” includes the power and output transformers, then yes those are big differences. The bigger Deluxe Reverb output transformer is the primary reason for the higher wattage rating. The bigger power transformer provides a “stiffer” power rail to the entire amp. Don’t forget, the Super Reverb was virtually the identical circuit as the Deluxe Reverb but with HUGE transformers and four 10” speakers. Oh and the size/power of the output transformer has a LOT to do with bass and clean headroom. A long-tailed pair phase inverter adds some gain, while the concertina (cathodyne) does not. So the Deluxe Reverb has one more gain stage, albeit not close to the gain of a normal 12AX7 gain stage. In addition, the Princeton’s PI can produce some ugly distortion at times while pushing a long-tailed pair is almost always musical. All that said, I had the pleasure of working on and blue printing an all original 1964 Princeton Reverb. Built a clone/derivative based on that amp and love it. I like bias vary tremolo better than just diddling the preamp signal.

Everyone else noticed no pedals needed/ used for most of the show. On one of my setups I have two Princeton’s and a Champ wet dry wet with a boost and two delays going to either amp and that’s all. One is brownface Princeton, the other a blackface and I can setup the Joey Landreth alternating trem experiment Dan did.

We reflect on that. With smaller amps it almost seems a shame to add OD pedals. And then comes the trade off. Not loud enough, bass end flubs out. Turns to Two Rock and Klon and remembers why Big Amps Make My Heart Melt. :0)
