I can't justify a D & M Drive or a Harmonious Monk, but the customer experience just for strings is wonderful and I don't feel like I'm missing out at all. The Because Tone box, hand written and personalised thank you card, stickers, tissue paper wrapping, and, last but not least, That Pedal Tape! Thank you to Catherine and the whole team. The brilliance of TPS and @JHS and a few other similar shows is that I as a hobbist player wouldn't have this many gear conversations in 100 lifetimes with staff at the local shop. Even though I have some EXCELLENT shops in the Detroit area, I'd have to LIVE THERE to learn all this information. Then there are people all over the globe that don't even have access to good local shops. For ever small criticism I've ever had for these shows there are 100 or 1,000 compliments I could give. Great show guys (as usual). I use my BD2 with the gain set to 12.00, and a DS1 in front with the gain on zero. These are "stay on" pedals - all is controlled from the guitar volume knob and playing dynamics. I like the "transparency" of the pedals - they just bring out the flavour of my amps. Works for me :)

I absolutely love the Lightspeed. My most used overdrive. Amazing pedal; I've thought about it a lot. I understand the circuit was quite unique. I think of "a transparent" drive as one that changes the EQ of your amp the least when its on. Most overdrives change the EQ in a big way. The Lightspeed doesn't much. Its also ampy in that it has a similar effect to turning your amp volume into break-up, but without increasing volume. I'd say the Timmy is even more "transparent". I swapped between the two for a while. The Lightspeed adds a crispy high end, making the break up more present, but changing that part of the EQ. Its less transparent than the Timmy, but I like that lovely crispyness.
@lincolndaugherty2 жыл бұрын
I have found that high end crispiness frustrating when playing higher gain. I've been able to dial it out with the tone control mostly, but not without compromise. I may try the timmy for the high gain stuff. I love the lightspeed for every other application. Thanks for the info!

The very heart of my latest daily-drive tone, is a Fulldrive mosfet II in front of an Mi Audio Crunch-Box... both set really low gain, each having a wonderful clarity with glistening distortions - these have taken over from a Tubescreamer in front of a Guv'nor. It has long, long been an approach of mine, to stack in this way, as you have two wonderful individual drives that cover a huge range, and a MASSIVE tower of iron when both are engaged, smashing all the way to huge thrash-levels of drive when the boost (also set minimally) is engaged on the Fulldrive for that... >smack smack smack of gum-chewing< ...extra push over the cliff, you know... Such a great place to be. Enough volume, dynamics and overdrive where your playing changes level of compression but you still have clean to. Volume level where your guitar starts resonating more but you are not in the feedback and it feels alive. Enough dynamics to pop that winning note with enough compression to still sound musical and not to brutal. I’ve loved light speed always though biggest surprise here, for me that is, is the wazacraft bd 2. I still have somewhere normal version. Maybe time to get this one to.

As I've gone on my tone quest and re-listened to my favorites throughout the years, I've found that less gain at loud volumes sounds better and clearer than more gain at loud volumes. My heroes on my favorite songs tended to have less gain, and also used their guitar's volume control to interact with their amps. So, I've found that once I dial in a nice edge of breakup tone from my amp all I really need when the situation calls for it is a boost pedal or OD pedal with just a little bit more gain. Sounds so much better to me.

@@bossgt6 Scholz hyperspace pedal. This unique effects pedal can be heard on every Boston album. It was homemade by Tom from a heavily modified Echoplex. The sounds produced from it are referred to by Tom in early Boston album liner notes as "special effects guitar" and can be heard in top form on a number of tracks from the orginal "Boston" (1976) and "Don't Look Back" (1978). From NOVA "Secret Life of Scientists and Engineers" interview (Tom Scholz): "I had to build devices to create certain sounds that I was looking for. My favorite device, is the Hyperspace Pedal as I call it. There's only two in existence, I built them a long long time ago. As I became more adept at using them, I was able to create all those out-of-this-world sounds that people are used to hearing on Boston albums, but haven't heard before, most likely."

Andy Timmons is a genius on his setup in having many levels of gain to suit what what he is playing.

I’ve never appreciated just how much time you people have invested in post production. After watching the whole video, I wanted to clarify a few things. So I finally used your time stamps, or “chapters” as you say, and was able to jump all over the place while staying focused on my original query. Awesome work! Amazing. JJZ…(°¿.°`)

Great show, gents. The BD-2 - plain version - was the first OD I bought, only a few years back, just for the hell of it. Love the thing and now I've added a few more, mainly for use in my "clean" channel for some extra flavours. Next drive, I'm wanting the Lightspeed, which I've played and loved but don't yet own. With luck and a strong wind behind me, a couple of months should see me right.

One of my favorite low gain ODs is the J.Rockett Holdsworth OD. Great OD pedal with the 3 different boost which can be selected to emphasize the high or Low frequencies. Sleeper pedal

Every time I'm in doubt about my gain section on the pedal board I return to this brilliant video. And then there comes this moment at 36:41 where Mick has the absolut same expression on his face as me when turning on my Lightspeed. Pushed by a Ryra Klon it's all I need. Thanks for the reminder 🙂

Great show! The Red Snapper has been on my board since 1999. It’s the only one that survives pedalboard iterations! Happy to see it featured here. Great intro, Dan!

Two bright points in a challenging day: this video--thanks kindly, you brilliant ends-of-legs--and something my 7yo daughter Leeloo (your bandmate of the purple uke) said when she wanted to play in the back yard. I asked if she remembered The Rules. She replied, "Wear shoes. Don't go out the gates. And don't talk to strangers. Except for Dan and Michael. *They're all good.*" I was SO confused. "The pedal show, Dad! GOSH!!!" I am still laughing. Holy hell... cheers, gents.

What a great show - thanks so much, the Boss Blues Driver is really interesting as an always on pedal. Love the tone and textures Andy Timmons gets, this may be my next try-out. Thanks TPS - see you Monday if your internet behaves!

hey, yeah, I have "blues " pedals, but the Blues Driver by Boss just follows your strat tone, quite flat eq, not very mid-humpy...cannot really go wrong with it, the Boss OD-3 is my jazz pedal...both in my understanding have FET-transisters involved , Im asucker forFET..., and so to top-coat these Boss peds I use the DOD/Shoe Looking Glass: FET: yes, Strat Glassiness n warmth: yes, Dumbleness with his: yes! 100 Moneys: YES ( Its seems my only near 200 costing pedal is the Mad Prof Simble: my main and always on one..., hope this helps tonewise...😎

I had the Lightspeed for quite some time, and got compliments on my tone when I used it. It’s the best low gain OD out there as it ads a nice fatness to your signal.

LOL this is great I love the Greer Lightspeed... this last weekend I made some changes to my pedal board and have my ODR-1 (set to a heavier drive tone) into my Lightspeed (drive anywhere between 11 - 1 o'clock) and MAN that's my new tone...

Low gain overdrives are always enough to punch through a mix and get a good amount of crunch. You guys taught me that you don't need to crank the gain on your overdrive pedal to get most dirt tones. It really helps push through a mix and add dynamic range. Keep teaching us things dudes! Btw the King of Tone is still the best low-medium gain drive of all time. Would love to hear Dan play it more often :)
