It would be nice for them to focus on bass cabs and let people know that heavy cabs which bump ≈100Hz to sound deep were superseded by lightweight cabs with real lows about a decade ago (e.g. Greenboy's designs and Barefaced Bass). Major manufacturers are making the same old stuff for much the same reason that teenage guitarists buy used 4x12s.
@rodavision6 жыл бұрын
I play both and it is very rare to find gear that works well for both. Most guitar gear sounds cool on bass but cuts bottom end so for amps I’ve always found I need to use a bass amp/cab or direct to board with a good sub because guitar amps (including "Bassman") sound lacking with bass. For pedals I need bass pedals (with a very short list of exceptions) or guitar pedals that have a dry through to mix. The dry through preserves the bottom end. Remember that perceived bass isn’t the same as actual low frequencies that you need in a band setting. What sounds low at home is often lost in a mix.

I was really feeling bad for Douggie, and then Mick came over and gave him a hug! Good man Mick! Overall, this was an awesome video! As a guitarist who **tries** to do some home recording, I feel clueless when I add the bass track. I know that playing bass is more than just playing the root of every chord! This was a really good intro, and I definitely would like to see more of this! (I also like the band synergy talk, particularly when Doug and Dishan talked about what they were omitting to make space for each other.)

Thanks for getting such a cool rhythm section on the show. I play electric guitar, acoustic guitar and bass in pretty much equal measure and I have a completely different head space for each instrument. As a guitarist even, this is one of my favourite shows yet. Playing with people rather than in your bedroom is the best part of playing music. Developing that instinct is the hardest and slowest thing I've found, but when you start to get it, is the most rewarding. It's as if you have to throw out all you know about playing and start to just listen instead. Playing with people taught me that my rhythm sucked and now thats the bit i try think about most. Simpler and tighter is always more enjoyable than listening to someone treating the rest of the band like a backing track for themselves. And amen to being the worst member in a band! I still suck but that's so important for developing!

Loved this vid and have watched it several times already. As a guitarist I'm always looking for new tips on getting great sounds from you guys. Bass is my home though and its good to see the best tone guide on the planet getting stuck into it. If you are going into bass in depth it would be great to cover some 'bass basics'. A good start would be the many applications of compression to getting different tones. A comparison of a few of the best pedals on the market vs a rack mount unit would be really informative. Your guitar stuff has been a huge inspiration to me and I would love to have an equivalent source for bass.

Hey, been a long time weekly viewer and this show was one of my favorites because it’s a mix of pedals and music. Mick had a great point about how we guitarists sometimes end up doing the bass line when recording - maybe expanding on that w/ more musical tips as well as what are the key three bass pedals we should get for those times in the studio. Thanks!

Rhythm first. Always. Dishan really nailed it on that one. The dryness of the new room really brings out the detail of the recordings, good call on that construction decision. Sound wise the intro blues sounds like a record. I did a double take because I thought for a moment a backing track was playing. And kudos to Mick for those horn-like licks on the outro funk. The four of you just made the world a better place. Greetings from Puerto Rico.

Lovin the band in the vids guys. I picked up an interesting little tip off you tube a few years ago about getting bass to be heard on the little speaker on your phone which is unfortunately how some people listen to music ect these days and that was to mix in a parallel bass track with a solid boost around 300hz because the little speakers don't go down to far below 300 and sometimes you can't hear any bass at all. It actually works and sounds ok.

I love hearing his philosophy. It was about 14 years of playing guitar before I picked up bass (ended up playing for 4 years in a band as a bassist). The one thing that pushed my guitar playing forward more than ANY other thing. It's the most important guitar on stage, and the one taken least seriously by most. It can single-handedly make or break (read: ruin) a band's sound.
