One delay is awesome, two can be truly spectacular! Here are some dual-delay ideas to try
Life too short for long KZbin videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
Welcome to the show! We are massive fans of delay and echo tones here at TPS. It’s hard to imagine a scenario where either Dan or I would use a board without a delay pedal on it… And then comes the problem: when there are so many great sounds available which //one// do you choose? For sure a multi-function do-it-all delay is a great solution and many of them have dual delay functionality to boot. But there’s also something incredibly satisfying - and in many cases more easily accessible and achievable - when you go for two separate delay pedals. Or more…
With that in mind this show expands on some ideas of how to use two delay pedals for maximum inspiration and effect.
Enjoy the show!

SCAM ALERT! Hello to everyone watching this. Please note we will NEVER promote competitions or prizes in KZbin comments sections. There are parties pretending to be us. So if ANYONE asks you to contact them saying you’ve won a prize and asks for details, please ignore them. Better still, please help us report them to KZbin. You have not won a prize, and it is not us. It’s happening right across KZbin, with collective apologies! Mick & Dan

Hey guys, thanks for getting back to me, so quickly, on the message I received about you having a package for me, for commenting, on the show where you, were explaining using, two delay. I’ve never won anything in my life, and as soon as I saw the massage, I thought it’s got to be scam. Your reply back to me confirmed my suspicions. Just so you know, it has been reported. I don’t why, people have to, ruin things for honest people, by causing them not to trust, interacting with your show, or others like it. Again Thank!

This gets so challenging when I have dearly loved and learned from everything you have done all the way back to the gigrig channel. You 2 have changed my musical life more than any of my "idols'. And your playing has been and remains absolutely inspiring. I'm a day job guy w/ a family. My gigging/touring is 20 years ago at this point and now its songwriting and soundtrack recording. Still just a humble novice who can make a dime here and there, but I care about it. And that is how I came to TPS. My own rig would not be anything special if it weren't for the 2 of you - and all your amazing friends. I am hanging on every word and every note. I sold a lot of stuff to make my wife not kill me for getting the Halo and the Dawner Prince Pulse this summer (Mick, I really need you to try that out and give it the biz). But, that Halo is the most amazing delay I have ever played - and I worked it out w/ an expression pedal. It is just brilliant - and so are you. This is 1 of the best and most important episodes I have ever seen - having not missed 1 ever. I just love you boys and this crew of folks who are are this family. .

Ah mate, thanks so much. I think you touched on something here that underpins everything. It doesn’t matter what level you’re at, where you are in your journey, the only thing that matters is that you care about it. Let’s be honest, not everyone, in fact, most people don’t, and that’s ok. This is a channel for people who do, for you and Mick and myself and anyone else who cares deeply 🙏

So much to unpack in this episode! Based on earlier TPS shows, I built a (TPS W/D) rig using an Ibanez AD-9 set to slapback feeding a Keeley Caverns delay and it sounds awesome. Then, the Andy T show inspired me to add a Strymon DIG dual delay to the effects loop and use it to replace my reverb. Oh, so good! Now another delay show with a bunch more ideas…I can’t keep up!! Thanks, D&M. Keep ‘em coming….

Mick just perfectly explained something I'd been trying to work out. Using the ultra short delay as a doubler. Saw a band play one night and the guy was hitting this pedal that made his sound So thick and fuzzy it was earthquaking. I looked at his board and it was an MXR Carbon Copy. I couldn't figure out how it was achieving the sound. NOW I KNOW. 👍👍👍👍👍👍

what i love about the parallel over series is; you can literally sound like 2 guitarists double up on the same riff but each split chain can be vastly different, creating wonderfully stacked textures....so much inspiration from that setup.

Gents! Great show. Two solid takeaways for me. First change the position of the slapback and add another delay to my wet dry wet so each wet has its own delay and none on the dry. Fabulous information. Also gave me a good reason to try the fx loop on the Koch Multitone in parallel instead of serial now that I have a better understanding of parallel. Thanks so much!

I almost didn’t watch this episode since I’ve never been much of a delay user, but I’m really glad I did. I intellectually understood the different ways you could use two delays, but hearing them all was a revelation. Looks like I’ll be ordering that second delay that I thought would be redundant.

Right out of the gate you hit me with something I haven't tried. Seems so simple, two delays set at the same time, but with different character. When I'm doing my thing, delays are an almost always on pedal(s) for me. JHS3, Memory Toy and a DD200 (lives on either analog or tape settings). Great show.

Great video. The coolest trick I have learned recently and likely you guys have covered in the past is when in stereo with two amps, once you have split your signal to stereo, put a digital delay on the left...set the mix to 100% wet, one repeat, and a 15 to 20 ms delay. I think it is essentially what the Strymon Deco is doing to a degree. Completely widens the spectrum immensely. Super awesome. Thanks for all you do.

In a live situation as a sound tech, I would use 2 delays on vocals (Kork SDD2000 & SDD 3000) . I would tap tempo the first one to be right on the beat and then off set the second one by about 10-20 ms more, ie. 400 & 420 ms. I panned each delay to hard left and right, then I would then proceed to feed the returns of each delay to the input of the other. It created lots of movement and depth. It was glorius !!!!

The timing of this video made me smile. Last week I placed a Carbon Copy Deluxe and a Wampler Faux Tape Echo on my board just to play around with. I set up the Carbon Copy with an external tap switch giving me two delay settings to swap between. One was set fairly short for a thickening effect. That with the Faux Echo set for a more obvious delay was epic. Ended up removing the tap switch and leaving the Carbon Copy with the short delay time as an always on pedal.

For the budget conscious, I’ve been using a Donner White Tape Delay which has 2 separate delays in one box. The slapback goes into a Harmony H305-C and the long delay goes into the FX loop of an Albion TCT35 along with some modulation. Before the split I put a JHS 3 series delay which I can mess around with as well as some gain staging. Great show, definitely some things there I will try.

great show as always guys! we could probably have a show on delays every 5th or so episode, and would still be exploring new possibilities! One thing that hit me about the Delay into distortion series was that it reminded me somewhat of Hendrix's echo sound on the Crash Landing album. Probably just my own subjectiveness there, plus Mick's amazing touch on that Strat, but never the less a very Hendrixy tone... In particular, listen to Peace in Mississippi off that record if you feel so inclined... i'm sure it had to be an old tape echo of some sort but the tone was seriously cool! thanks again guy, great stuff!

So this is a great video guys and I have gone back-and-forth in my years of playing in regards to delays. i’ve had standalone delay units the very first one ever was the boss DD3 that I bought in 1982 I believe no tap tempo of course. Then my next biggest purchase was a Roland GPA one of the first for real multieffects units and from that day on I’ve been back-and-forth multi effects… Delay as an analog pedals mostly no program ability and then I go back to multi effects… I finally was healed of that compulsion but what I realize is I don’t need a lot of delay… it just gets in the way I want a little bit of spice I don’t want it to drown out the taste of my meal so for me two delay petals even three are great I don’t really do much a lot of combining I just don’t like having a pedal they can do 128 different patches and I got a remember which is which. I currently use the standard TC flashback, the mini flashback and the ARP delay. I find the only way I can make them play nice together is if I have a Switcher, i’ve been trying to scale the physical size of my board down so if I put a sweater on there it kind of defeats the purpose although I’ve been curious about something like a midi mouse, Something that only relates to the delight paddles not sure if I’m thinking straight but if that doesn’t work out I’m good with it just trying to focus on the plane

I have 3 delays on my board, an EchoBrain early in the chain with time and repeats all the way down to act more like a doubler/boost, then later a SolidGoldFX EM-III to do superclear digital tape-delay emulation followed by a DOD Rubberneck for dirty but beautiful analog delay. But this was cool to watch because I don't usually run them at the same time, I have some new stuff to try!

Yeah multiple delays!!!!! Thank you so much, I do this for years, and there is always something more to learn. My favoutite delay is the TC Nova Delay, very often in combination of dotted 8ths and quarters, sadly tc don't bulit it anymore. For years I played two line6 echo pro. Thankfully you talked a bit of the edge: To be honest, when the edge did hist multi delays, he mostly dialed the in by ear, so it was not exactly, what makes the sound bigger. It is always fun when you try some U2 songs. I always think come on you are so incredible great guitar players, far ahead from me, and everytime you do U2 I know okay this is something I really know to play ;) thats good for my ego, thank you, because your scills are so far beyond from my guitar play in every other moment. For pride(in the name of love) he adds a third delay during the solo. One trick of his sound: boost front end of your old VOX. Not a big secret, but Daniel Lanois and the edge often do this with a delay unit for example a Korg SD 3000.

I picked the Boss DD500 because it will do all of these things by programming the patches differently (though I need a good switcher for the before / after preamp thing). I typically run a tape delay with short time and modulation on the "dry" amp, and add a longer digital with phasing to the "wet" side for leads. Another patch has a reverb-y setting plus a reverse delay for a faux shoe-gaze feel. Another patch has the delays in series for a quarter plus dotted eighth (in perfect time because they set from the same tempo tap). I can also set it to kill dry for true wet/dry, or parallel delays to both amps, and much more! The DD500 does it all.

Oh yes! This is nipple vibratingly good stuff. I always have at least 2 delays on my board and switch/mix them due to needing to create a fuller sound and “fill in the gaps”. (I perform solo with just a suitcase drum, playing blues and songs nobody knows at the open mic nights). Stay groovy.

Feels this video is tailored just for me. My only delay pedals are the carbon copy and the recently acquired DD-200. I was just pondering the other day if I should run them together and how I might go about that. Cheers mates!

I run a strymon volante and timeline together. Wonderful for having one focusing on the tape sound and the other doing complex effecty delays

I've taken a bit of stick over the years for being a 2-delay kinda guy. But you can really do soooooooo much with two delays that you simply cannot do with one. My stock thing is a reverse delay into a forwards delay, both sync'd with each other to a quarter note. It gives me these gorgeous washes!

It’s a really interesting way of using digital in a way that helps the analogue not get too muddy. Or to add some clarity to a dark analogue delay.

Great episode thanks lads 👍🏼 It's amazing how many times (myself included) have tried to emulated The Edge's Dotted Delay Tone and fail miserably but close enough to pass for the paying punters to enjoy 😅

I like to use a Tape or Lo-Fi Delay into a bright digital delay, as it gives me some multi-head sounds, as well as having one more level of crazy to go to, during a really trippy lead.

For years, I had a deluxe memory man on my board that was always on. I would adjust the mix with my foot. It gave me a nice chorused pad beneath my playing that wasn't distracting with the mix down low. I miss doing that.

I use 2 delays, one as a doubler and the other as a longer delay. Usually I don't use it at the same time as I will use the doubler with gain for solos. Also after watching the video on how to get other things from a delay, I use it as a chorus as well by engaging the modulation on the Carbon Copy. Thanks for that, as it gave me an excuse for leaving the second delay on the board.

What I really enjoyed about the dual delays hard panned to separate amps is how wide it sounds. You can accentuate this effect by phase reversing one of the delays. This is part of what makes the Halo pedal sound so big. Pretty sure a Timeline can do this as well. Also a trick famously employed by the TC 2290.

Great episode! There is/was a factory patch in the Line 6 Helix floor called “Secret Journey” that was set up to mimic Andy Summer’s sound for the song of the same name (A Roland GR300 for those playing the home game). I think it used 8 or 9 different delays all in series!

I came up with a great guitar part through two delay pedals, sounded great! I couldn't get it to work in the context a full mix with drums, bass guitar and a second guitar. It's a very useful thing, but context is important. If it doesn't work in a song, simplify. If you can put it in a song, do it!
