I have an EHX Crayon, and its killer for getting extra grain, or aggression out of another gain source (amp or pedal). Its a hidden Metal beast, I dont know why more metal guys dont use them over TS pedals. You can dial far more bass out (great for low tunings) and if you amp pre does not quite do metal by itself, it with thrust it into metal territory (usually a slight to large bass cut slight treble boost) with gain on next to nothing (8 oclock) volume anywhere from 12 oclock to full, and it will make your amp grittier and boost and add compression . To me it can be used like a "turbo" tube screamer when you need to add more punch and grit as well as compression. On amps that have hi gain but are maybe a little smooth or sweet sounding (maybe more blue rock oriented) you can make them snarl with the Crayon, and focus the bass/low end far better than any tube screamer. It does not have much more gain passed 12 oclock and most of the bite i find is under 9 oclock gain, but its amazing. then there are the usual uses people use them for lool
@martinpadel77753 жыл бұрын
So for itself does it work? I found it a little bit crunchy not in a good way for metal tones.
@jacksmith4460 Жыл бұрын
@@martinpadel7775 The way I use this pedal for metal is to stack into something RAT or OCD based that is maybe quite thick and a little too woolly usually, and it adds some edge , definition and tone shaping As a Core tone I dont think it works for Metal even when boosted, but using it as a boost through a more "muffled" sound, its brilliant. For metal I love it in front of a TRex Mudhoney2, it really enhances the grit and articulation , but you can set up the bass to be tight and modern or bigger and doomy,, I love it. Not sure if I answered your question

They are, absolutely! I do have a RYRA Klone pedal myself, and it's great. But my idea within Your idea was, if I had 3500 quids to spend on pedals, I would like to buy those "mythical" units and see if they are really worth the price. Probably not, hehe.

I don't know if a Butler tube driver counts as mythical, but it's a pricy boutique and it's losing badly to a Fulltone OCD for something like 1/4th the price. I'll bend it to my will/sell it.

Dan to your question at 45:12 the toneprint app will only allow you to download pre-set tones, but (and this is where i spend countless hours of fun!) you can also download for free the tone print editor (i have it on my mac but there is also an iPad version which i haven't used yet). I have a sub n up so as well as having infinite control over those octave tones (and edit the presets / artists versions, etc) you can also add Corona Chrous, Voltex Flanger and / or shaker vibrato and have ability to edit how those tones are applied too. You can only add it to the wet signal (which makes sense or they'd only need to make these as a single pedal) but it does give you the ability to add those modulation sounds. So whilst you can't dial in your pedal to be a completely different pedal you can do a ton more than what the toneprint app can.........

Dan and Mick, I would love a show about guitars direct into a sound board for live performance. My Lead guitarist and myself(rhythm guitar + lead singer) fight with volume levels and tones all the time. We currently use guitar processors and a DI box, which we hate. But we are stuck in a SMALL venue for a cover gig. So I'm currently using a boss me-20. Which I freakin hate. But I get a great clean tone, but a crappy OD tone. Which I have learned from your show is because of PA headroom and lack of compression. I'm about to scrap my whole rig for a wampler plexi-drive plus, and some add on's, just get some tone and cut thru. My lead player uses a silver jubilee at home. I use a jcm 900 at home. But for our cover gig (American 90's alternative) we can't use. SO, post some options for the small venue/ PA sounds. Much appreciated, and also we love how one dude swangs and the other dude dials. That's how we do it too. Thanks, Doc + Stox, from Iraq. I should mention, our Cover Gig is from the Embassy in Iraq. So we can't buy just anything, we have to research on the net, test it quickly when we go home, and mule it in when we come back.

Fun fact, at almost the exact same time same time that EHX released the Crayon, JHS released a stripped down version of the Colour Box that was just the pre-amp section for guitars. What did JHS call this simplified (and significantly less expensive) version of the Colour Box? “Crayon,” naturally. I am not aware that JHS and EHX got in any legal tiff over this; just a funny coincidence.

Also, instead of the Soul Food, I'd have the Hoof fuzz, also by Earthquaker Devices. The delay is just spot-on - you can't go wrong with anything made by Maxon.

There's no reason for the modulations, delays or reverbs on multi-effect units to be worse. Under the hood, most of them are digital. I'd like to see them have a go at the Zoom MS series, particularly the 70CDR that omits any sort of distortion.

If you look you can find those four pedals new and leave enough money for a 1spot, patch cables, velcro and a piece of wood to stick them on. I never tried the Rat but videos I've watched make it seem like a great pedal. I do have the CE5 and Mini Flashback and those are excellent. I just bought a TC Electronic "The Prophet" because I wanted an affordable digital delay, and I really like it. I think when it comes to delay there are many flavors, I have a Keely Cavern's and it is cool, but I am not in love with it.

I'm surprised there's no compression there.

I wanna see you guys do a Pedalboard challenge of completely mini pedals. Rules: 2/3 gain stages, delay, Reverb and a modulation or 2. Any budget you want. Just all pedals have to be mini ones.

You know you're getting old when the grass your favourite musicians use is sourced from Homebase.

This was great. I calculated £350 to $450 American and came up with: Ibanez Tubescreamer Mini, Fulltone OCD, MXR Analog Chorus and MXR Carbon Copy Delay. Thanks as always guys. Great stuff.

This was fantastic!!!! WOW! Getting a one-one consult about pedalboards from the experts!!! Thanks Lads! Good advice! I like Mick's chain better FWIW. Both are great!

I use a DOD LookingGlass in the same way as the BD-2 is used here (people sleeping on that pedal, one of the best OD's ever made, yet overlooked)
