To anyone with an adventurous side you can build your own King of Tone Clone. Rullywow has the queen of bone. Is it just as good? No idea. It never leaves my board though and I use it all the time. It’s one of the greats. Just takes some soldering, ordering parts and not buggering it up. I went on to make a Jan Ray (Timmy with a mod) and a couple of others. I think something that was missed here is that the POT is based on the KOT with the High Gain mod. If you're going to compare 1 KOT to 2 POT's it makes more sense to use a KOT that has the High Gain mod on both sides.

A couple things: I read that Mike’s wife passed away in 2019. I imagine a loss as immense as this would contribute to the delays. If I lost my wife, I’d be lost. I can’t imagine finding the path forward, and he has so bravo. I have two KOTs (one green and one purple) that I adore. The purple is high gain red side and the green one is normal gain both. For what it's worth, I ordered a King of Tone with the toggle switch on the outside of the case, four-wire connection on the outside of the case, and an external power out to power other pedals.. All of those things are now offered as options. Yes, the 2.5-year wait was tedious but definitely worth it.
@quijahn8369 Жыл бұрын
King of Tone vs. Prince of Tone? I’ve been gigging on the Prince for around 5 years. Just received my KoT from analog man after a 5 year wait! My findings so far are that I, for most situations, prefer the Prince over the King. I play it stacked after a keeley comp and a tumnus. The keeley and tumnus give me edge of breakup clean tone and the Prince is what I use to push it over the edge. The prince keeps a level of clarity without sounding harsh, but provide a desirable mid range that lets you sing. I find I have access to more dynamic range through my playing. I can push or pull back and really dial into the intensity of the playing. I 100% agree with Mick on this. This is on a strat. That said, on a les Paul, I prefer the KING. It’s unbelievable how night and day the King is vs. prince when it comes to a les paul. Looks like I’ll be making room for both….

I can’t believe this is the topic this week. Just yesterday I had some time so I spent a few hours tinkering with my KOT settings/options inside and out!!! Of course I only have one pedal, but I was comparing all my options. I’ve always had a problem running both sides together in stock - I don’t have the high gain side - but I turn the red side on and off, with the yellow side on all the time, as opposed to Dan who leaves both sides on all the time. Last night I settled on making both sides boost and then the left one I cranked the drive to make it overdrive, while the right side stayed boosty (both with a smidge of presence boost). I wanna try Dan’s approach - stock settings with the presence pot up a bit and both sides on all the time. This video is so great and right in line with what I was exploring!!! Thanks!!!!!

My pedalboard right now: Poly tuner, Small Stone nano & KoT. That’s it, three pedals. No more step dance during rehearsals or gigs. Edit: I sold my black KoT in 2018, but now I wanted one again. Since there was no-one for sale, I dug up the email adress for the guy who bought it in 2018, saying «hi, I sold you the KoT several years ago, can I buy it back?». He was like: «oh, that was you. I may sell it». Long story short, he was willing to sell it to me. Funny thing, when I opened the box, my black KoT was now purple. I sendt him a message saying «thanks for the pedal, sounds great. It has however changed colour from black to purple». Turns out he was colorblind, and had owned two. Doesn’t matter, best pedal ever.

Seeing the passion put into all these pedals was amazing, but more impressive was how well I was treated every time I walked in the door. I’ve had a KoT for years but I’m wondering if a Klon-type pedal could afd something useful for me.
@realgoodmind3 жыл бұрын
@@EzyoMusic I have used the Klon for years. I just use it as a clean boost and it just gives me more of what my guitar and amp do by themselves than any other pedal before. No coloring the of sound just makes me hear my guitar and amp more. I got the KoT and I set one side to use this exact way with little gain and the other side I make it a real cranked drive pedal. I think the KoT does almost exactly what the Klon does for me on the clean boost side but I also have an even better drive side and when stacked I can get full out madness. I need multiple pedals to do all of that with a Klon. For example I would use a Klon>BB Pre or Klon>AP broadcaster or Klon>etc to get that really jacked sound. SUmmary- the KoT is the pedal for me.

Plus how the Duke of Tone is stacked with each of the following mini pedals Wampler Tumnus, Nobels ODR, Timmy and the Ibanez Tube Screamer. The big question is: would 2 Duke of Tones be the best or would one Duke of Tone be best matched up with another great mini overdrive pedal? Or would a Wampler Tumnus stacked with a Timmy for example be the prefered combination. Think it will would be an interesting video.

KOT yep, clearly clean and solid all around, but obviously don't know if I'll survive the wait list of now nearly 4 years. Stacking drives and boosts is always too fun. An interesting thing here is the quick look at boost after drive. Different things work differently and then change the guitar (pickups) and there goes the day ! Thing is, when a tone strikes you, write it down before it's gone and you can't quite get it back ! Again, great show. THX

Yep, very special guitar

Posting while watching to just say THANK YOU for doing this. I have PoT and find the mid boost is very present (I like that), and that there isn't much difference between boost and dist except for the volume shift. I favor the boost setting by far.

Really fun (and interesting!) show. I've got the old Barber version of the Gainster, and it's a great OD - very tweedy sounding mids. I think the Menatone Red Snapper is another (maybe the original?) version of the circuit.

I think I now understand why I stopped using my tube screamer type overdrive a while back and strive for Klon and or KOT circuit based overdrive now

I would love a show on amp overdrive. Vox/Fender BF/Marshall/Two Rock compared then all amps through an EV type speaker to show how much of the amps breakup & compression is coming from the speaker.

The 2 POTs didn't really sound close to the KOT, but there were a number of times where I definitely preferred the POT. I'm not much of a gain pedal dude anyhow (thank god, because I couldn't handle the wait), but even I can hear that these pedals have a certain kind of mojo that can't be denied... great vid chaps

I wish you guys would have tried adjusting EQ settings on the amp to see how close you could get. I understand it would take more work as you are switching between the two, but I think that is where I think the potential for matching the tone happens.

While cost+wait time discourages me from one of these, I DID recently cross the dual OD Rubicon with a used Fulltone GT-500 from a private owner, which was priced..ahem, more than a bit below usual market price presumably due to recent developments. Tremendous piece of equipment that plays nicely with my AC10. Full Drive or GT-500 on the resale market might be a good look for dual OD on a budget

I ordered a KOT and got one with the High Gain option. I also years ago bought one of his Sunlion fuzz pedals that is a NKT275 fuzz followed by a Beano Boost. My chain is then KOT

Great video as always! I would love to watch another video about different alternatives to the KOT, if you'll do it (please!!!) I suggest to include the Vsaudio Royal Flush :D

Hello! We did one ages ago, and then another more recently. Cheers!

Tsakalis makes phenomenal stuff. I don't suppose either of you fellas will be needing a 2-channel high-gain distortion just now, but the Tsakalis Nerve is the best I've ever found for plugging into backline amps and using as "your channels." Very JCM800 on 1a or modded 800/Bogner on 1b, very Dual Rectifier on 2, great tone stack including Presence to fit any amp. (And, as I recently learned from Chris T. himself, "Tsakalis" is pronounced "CHOCK-ah-leese.")

Status as of todays date of January 2, 2022: King Of Tone is now shipping to people who got on the waiting list on or anytime before October 25, 2017. I've been on the waitlist since June 2018...almost there 😭

Great show as always, guys. I'm wondering, would the differences in two of the same pedal come down to individual component values and the accrual of those differences throughout their respective circuits? Much love, fellas. Thanks for all you do.

Great show! I have both the KOT and POT and use the POT for boost and heavier OD stuff. Dan, great opening! ACE!

I never had the slightest interest in either of these pedals but enjoyed watching that start to finish 😂 cheers guys! Hope your doing extremely well! Oh, and BTW, I‘d give the nod to the KOT ... damn.

That Supro and tone king set up you guys have been using is awesome! That’s probably the pair (or really close to) the pair of amps I’d use if I had the budget! I love the Supro stuff and it’s hard to beat a fendery stuff!
@ThatPedalShow3 жыл бұрын
Yeah man it really works. Interestingly I just did some audio today for a show we filmed yesterday. We swapped out it the Supro for my Two Rock.... and I actually think the Supro works better with the TK. Interesting!
@JacobH933 жыл бұрын
@@ThatPedalShow Interesting! Maybe it was a little too much mid scoop? I would think the Supro would help fill that range up a bit. Maybe not as much as a vox or something along those lines, but similar idea!

The Gretsch knocked it out of the park. Of all the pedals today I like the Olympus the best. I have a KOT and will never let it go, but to be honest I do not use it all that much. Something about the top end of the Olympus just grabbed my attention. Thanks again guys for another informative show for us gear geeks from over the pond in the old USA. Cheers fellas.

Just got my KOT a month ago after an over 3 year wait. Serendipitously my order came up timed perfectly with the limited antique silver enclosure (like the Bi-comp). I went normal gain on both sides and I must say it was worth the wait. It’s a special pedal.

Thanks so much guys for doing this episode that I asked for last year. I’m still about a year away from being at the top of the list for the King of Tone. Also cannot get Prince of Tones either these days. Thanks and be well my friends

Not long now Ross - apols, we should have mentioned you too! Hope you’re well man!

No apologies needed. You did what I asked for and I am grateful. Was most impressed by the Mythos Olympus btw. About 8 weeks wait before shipping. On a different note while not on his site yet, your friend Simon Jarrett recently posted to his channel a short demo of his Artisan pedal which I think you may have seen an early version of. Very interesting indeed.

Until recently, I didn't get what all the fuss was about when it came to the KoT/Blues Breaker type of pedals. The demos I heard made it sound similar to a TS and I didn't like the blend of clean and overdrive that I heard. I recently acquired a Reuss pedal that does that KoT/Blues Breaker thing, and after spending some time with it, and recording with it, I'm happy to say that now I get it. It does, to my ear at least, the clean amp on the verge of break up, really well. It's fantastic also as a boost, but where I dig it is in the higher gain tones. Anywhere between 12 and 3 (depending on the guitar) is where I use it the most. Sounds killer with a Tumnus boosting the front end too.
@ThatPedalShow3 жыл бұрын
Nice! I reckon they work well into amps that are just breaking up too. Mick here. Something harmonically nice starts to happen. Cool! Hope you’re well!
