This week is a break from the usual show format as we welcome a very special guest: Lee Anderton, aka ‘The Captain’ from Andertons Music in Guildford, UK. Along with his friend and co-host, Rob Chapman, The Cap is responsible for some of the biggest viewed guitar vids on KZbin, as well as running one of the UK’s biggest and best music stores.
During the video we discuss all kinds of things, including The Cap’s own Desert Island Pedalboard, his ’54 Anniversary Strat and a whole bunch of other stuff to boot. Sit back, grab a beer and join the conversation.
For more on Andertons, please visit their website at: /www.andertons.co.uk

Gotta love this golden era of KZbin channels. For people like me That Pedal Show is a dream come true but it couldn't exist without a platform like KZbin. Stuff like this could have never been, nor will ever be, on TV. No network would ever buy a show that is this deeply geeky and niché but for many of us it's way more interesting than anything on TV these days :D

On that PlimSoul, the second gain stage is an LED clipping stage. The guitar signal passes through that exposed LED to get its second round of gain. The louder you play your guitar, the more current runs through that LED, so that's why you can only hardly see it sometimes.

That "Stage 2" LED trick looks like it's plain simple: I guess it's another gain stage that utilizes LEDs as clipping diodes, and the LEDS light up. That LED is probably one of those clipping diodes.

I couldn't agree more with Lee about the journey of finding your tone, and it making you play at a higher level than you would play if not inspired by your tone. I began playing guitar in 1985. My first guitar was a Hondo Strat copy and my first amp was a Roland DAC-10. Needless to say, my tone wasn't exactly all that inspiring, even for a 14-year-old punk who was convinced he was going to be in the best hardcore band east of the Mississippi. It wasn't until I was 20 years old that I got serious about wanting to play guitar and be inspired to play at a higher level. I literally drove around to every guitar shop in the Detroit-Metro area for an entire year until I found the guitar that nailed the tone I was looking for, as well as being a quality instrument that played like butter; it was a 1991 Gibson SG Special in TV yellow. Now onto my amps. After purchasing my SG, I decided on a Fender M-80 Stereo Chorus amp which sounded quite good. About 3 months later, I purchased a Digitech GSP 5 from a crackhead in front of my house, which I ran through the FX loop of my M-80. The tone I got from that setup was amazing. I eventually upgraded to a Laney Pro-Linebacker 100 Reverb half stack. Finding my tone led me to form a band, which later inspired me to move to San Francisco to start a band with other friends and form amazing friendships with people I'm great friend with 23 years later. The bassist from my first band went on to play with several other bands and musicians, tour, and basically change the entire trajectory of his life. Needless to say, I still play guitar to this day and have improved my tone even further thanks to Lee and Rob. I discovered their Anderton's videos while amp shopping about 4 years ago. I was looking for an affordable tube head, preferably an Orange. I found Rob and Lee's video "The Ultimate Orange Tiny Terror Shoot Out (Studio Quality Demo)". I decided on the Dark Terror, as I couldn't afford a TH30 head at that time. I paired the DT with an Orange PPC212 open-back cab. Well, I saved my pennies and eventually bought a TH30 head and an Orange PPC212 closed-back cab. I now run my TH30 through both my PPC212 cabs, and am in tone heaven. I have been playing at a level and with an ease that I never thought I would; with the help of a pretty nice guitar collection now too. So Lee is ABSOLUTELY correct when he says that finding your tone is where it's at.

I really appreciate what Dan said about the "old-style" hand made amps. There is great value in knowing a talented fellow human spent hours using years of expertise to create the best amp, guitar, pedal, etc. so you can create the best music of which you are capable. I appreciate getting great tone cheap (don't we all), but the value I and Dan spoke of is real and as valid as the value of the sounds it makes.

Another one of my fave episodes here. Speaking personally about why the Andertons channel and That Pedal Show is so popular, I watch it because there is so much more than just guitar talk thrown into the mix. I love the well informed but laid back interaction and indeed, the lack of hyperbole surrounding the gear. Both channels get to the nub of the subject matter in question without that feeling of a product(s) being pushed in your face. In short, the love, chemistry and the humor shine through.

+Simon Godfrey cheers Simon. I will just say that it was never part of 'the plan', Mick and I were walking around in LA talking about gear, as we always do, when Mick said, "we should just film this". Thanks so much for watching ;)

I hit the play button, as soon as i saw the notification on my phone. What a great video. What a great guy Lee is. Second time this week, Anderton colaborates with another favorite channel of mine (Glenn was the first one). This is too much good content.😀 Keep it up, everyone.👍

I've been an acoustic player for a long time (I've also been playing my electric acoustically outside rare band rehearsals). Then I bought a multifx pedal to be able to play in my bedroom with all the effects and amps. It didn't work out like I imagined. I cannot come up with something interesting or play for a while without getting bored. I finally figured out that this is all about what you guys said about being in the zone and being inspired by the gear. All the menus and hassle stuff makes it boring even before the first note! Another wallet comment coming but damn, you guys make us need more and more stuff!

A while back I had real bad pedal GAS... Thanks in large part to this channel and the Andertons and Rob Chapman channels. To the point where every other week I had something new from the local music store, pawn shop, of eBay. Then I sold them all but a few key pieces to get a better amp. Now I find myself buying and using less pedals because the Egnater Rebel 30 really doesn't need much more than a boost or overdrive... But, I tend to buy more expensive pedals now. Especially the pedals of a small builder from my home town called TL Pedals. His King Klon, a dual pedal with a Klone going into a King of Tone circuit is next on my list.

Well worth watching again because the Captain was smokin' even before his lessons with Justin! I think Lee was born for playing the Blues on a Strat. I still think Mick should be editor of Guitarist. So there!!

Hearing +CaptAnderton talk about preconceived ideas and opinions on anything reminds me of the demo Chappers and The Captain did on the Billy Gibbons Gibson Les Paul strung with 7s. What Lee said at the end of that video is amazing (so was the skills & tone but that always goes without saying).

The Captain's comment on guitars vs. amps made me think of this: How might you arrange a hierarchy of factors that affect basic tone? From the radical (speaker cabinet and pickup type), through the finnicky (cable length and quality), to the trivial (the color of the control knobs)? I know an exhaustive list would be impossible, but a general ranking could help out a lot of us tone-hounds. Cool video btw, seems like you had a lot of fun jamming and hanging out.
