I have an EHX Crayon, and its killer for getting extra grain, or aggression out of another gain source (amp or pedal). Its a hidden Metal beast, I dont know why more metal guys dont use them over TS pedals. You can dial far more bass out (great for low tunings) and if you amp pre does not quite do metal by itself, it with thrust it into metal territory (usually a slight to large bass cut slight treble boost) with gain on next to nothing (8 oclock) volume anywhere from 12 oclock to full, and it will make your amp grittier and boost and add compression . To me it can be used like a "turbo" tube screamer when you need to add more punch and grit as well as compression. On amps that have hi gain but are maybe a little smooth or sweet sounding (maybe more blue rock oriented) you can make them snarl with the Crayon, and focus the bass/low end far better than any tube screamer. It does not have much more gain passed 12 oclock and most of the bite i find is under 9 oclock gain, but its amazing. then there are the usual uses people use them for lool

So for itself does it work? I found it a little bit crunchy not in a good way for metal tones.
@jacksmith4460
@jacksmith4460 Жыл бұрын
@@martinpadel7775 The way I use this pedal for metal is to stack into something RAT or OCD based that is maybe quite thick and a little too woolly usually, and it adds some edge , definition and tone shaping As a Core tone I dont think it works for Metal even when boosted, but using it as a boost through a more "muffled" sound, its brilliant. For metal I love it in front of a TRex Mudhoney2, it really enhances the grit and articulation , but you can set up the bass to be tight and modern or bigger and doomy,, I love it. Not sure if I answered your question

With that kind of money it's easy to end up with only two-three pedals! ;) Let me say, Moog MF-104M Super Delay and a Klon Centaur and maybe with a WV MK2 as well. I would spend it like that, yey ;)

They are, absolutely! I do have a RYRA Klone pedal myself, and it's great. But my idea within Your idea was, if I had 3500 quids to spend on pedals, I would like to buy those "mythical" units and see if they are really worth the price. Probably not, hehe.

I don't know if a Butler tube driver counts as mythical, but it's a pricy boutique and it's losing badly to a Fulltone OCD for something like 1/4th the price. I'll bend it to my will/sell it.

Dan to your question at 45:12 the toneprint app will only allow you to download pre-set tones, but (and this is where i spend countless hours of fun!) you can also download for free the tone print editor (i have it on my mac but there is also an iPad version which i haven't used yet). I have a sub n up so as well as having infinite control over those octave tones (and edit the presets / artists versions, etc) you can also add Corona Chrous, Voltex Flanger and / or shaker vibrato and have ability to edit how those tones are applied too. You can only add it to the wet signal (which makes sense or they'd only need to make these as a single pedal) but it does give you the ability to add those modulation sounds. So whilst you can't dial in your pedal to be a completely different pedal you can do a ton more than what the toneprint app can.........

My choices would have been VERY similar to Dan's: The Blues Driver is one of my favorite BOSS pedals ever. As far as modulation, I go back & forth between the Electric Mistress and a uni-vibe of some sort, my current fave being The Depths by Earthquaker Devices. Also, instead of the Soul Food, I'd have the Hoof fuzz, also by Earthquaker Devices. The delay is just spot-on - you can't go wrong with anything made by Maxon.

350 Pounds ~ $460.00 US So here goes. Delay: TC Alter Ego 2 $99.00 at a certain on-line retailer Mod: Going to keep the price down here EHX Neo Clone 65.00 (All analog and this is very close to the Small Clone one of my favorite choruses), OD: Budgeting 99.00 here so either a TS-9 (skipping the mini, small knobs and gigs don't mix for me) or BD-2. Which leaves 198.00 for Fuzz! Analogman SunFace quickship with BC 183's. $180.00 will do nicely!

Dan and Mick, I would love a show about guitars direct into a sound board for live performance. My Lead guitarist and myself(rhythm guitar + lead singer) fight with volume levels and tones all the time. We currently use guitar processors and a DI box, which we hate. But we are stuck in a SMALL venue for a cover gig. So I'm currently using a boss me-20. Which I freakin hate. But I get a great clean tone, but a crappy OD tone. Which I have learned from your show is because of PA headroom and lack of compression. I'm about to scrap my whole rig for a wampler plexi-drive plus, and some add on's, just get some tone and cut thru. My lead player uses a silver jubilee at home. I use a jcm 900 at home. But for our cover gig (American 90's alternative) we can't use. SO, post some options for the small venue/ PA sounds. Much appreciated, and also we love how one dude swangs and the other dude dials. That's how we do it too. Thanks, Doc + Stox, from Iraq. I should mention, our Cover Gig is from the Embassy in Iraq. So we can't buy just anything, we have to research on the net, test it quickly when we go home, and mule it in when we come back.

Fun fact, at almost the exact same time same time that EHX released the Crayon, JHS released a stripped down version of the Colour Box that was just the pre-amp section for guitars. What did JHS call this simplified (and significantly less expensive) version of the Colour Box? “Crayon,” naturally. I am not aware that JHS and EHX got in any legal tiff over this; just a funny coincidence.

Great video and love the idea of having a smaller budget for creating a mini pedal board ,that will satisfy majority of players. Now what I will say, may get booed by others, would you ever consider reviewing multi effects units, like boss gt1 or zoom g3? Could you guys dial a decent sound that surprises you and the viewers?

There's no reason for the modulations, delays or reverbs on multi-effect units to be worse. Under the hood, most of them are digital. I'd like to see them have a go at the Zoom MS series, particularly the 70CDR that omits any sort of distortion.

I think the problem with multi effects demos is that it takes years to really learn how to use any multi effect properly. It's taken me 12 years to master my Boss ME-50 and I'm still trying new things with it. But I'll tell you what, no one with a pedal board has been able to top my tone yet.

Great show guys! Especially liked Dan's choice to replace his Electric Mistress, almost has that sound. I, like Dan, love that sound, but it's been cost prohibitive. Dan, if you had to pick an everyday replacement for the Electric Mistress, and you could pick anything, what would you choose to get that sound?

I'm from Canada and 350 pounds is almost $600 for us! Can you do $350 in cad? That would be almost 210 pounds. A lot of my customers would not buy $600 worth of pedals. I think you'll have fun with this one lol

I think one of the coolest things here, revisiting 8 months later is that the enjoyment of and enthusiasm for these (less expensive) pedals is real and discernible. No need to have Uber-expensive, cork-sniffery pedals to enjoy pedals and tones. Pedal love for everyone at almost any price point. That’s the thing. Still well-done guys.

£350 (£365 ish) EHX Hot Tubes (£60 always gain set at 9 O'clock so its just adds warmth and compression to cleans) EHX Crayon (£60) TRex Mudhoney 2 (£80 I just bought one off thomann) TC 3rd Dimesnion (£30, these things are so good for the money 98% accurate to the Dimension C) Joyo D-SEED (£55) Digitech Super Natural (£85 cant get them new any more so failing this a Mooer Skyverb for £60 does small to big verbs) This rig could do any music type

After revisiting this episode I decided to price a hypothetical $350 board, and it would consist of a Boss SD1, Proco Rat, Boss CE5 and a Mini Flashback. If you look you can find those four pedals new and leave enough money for a 1spot, patch cables, velcro and a piece of wood to stick them on. I never tried the Rat but videos I've watched make it seem like a great pedal. I do have the CE5 and Mini Flashback and those are excellent. It's nice to go back and watch these old episodes occasionally. It never gets old!

As requested, here's my £350 board (prices correct as of June 30th 2017, all sourced from Andertons) OD: Tone City Golden Plexi £39.99 Modulation: Mooer Trelicopter £42.00 Delay: TC Echobrain £51.00 Bonus: Nobels ODR-1 £84.99 Bonus: Dunlop Crybaby £89.99 Total: 307.97 I usually use a sub octave in my band (which I would swap the Trelicopter for, but felt it didn't really count as a "modulation" pedal) What I'd REALLY like to see you guys do is buy cheap guitars and mod them for a budget of, say, £350. Perhaps a bullet strat/tele and then any money left over goes on upgrades. Excellent episode, and thank you so much for alleviating my mental health crisis this Friday!

+SoulIsTheGoal Nice one - Mick here. I so nearly went for the Echobrain. Sub and Up qualifies as modulation for us. :0) Cheap guitars... hmmm. We're racing to the bottom here. ;0) Thanks for watching, and all the best for that crisis, whatever it may be. Tone for the soul. :0)

Great Video. I recently purchased a Joyo D-Seed delay pedal and its amazing. Only cost around £50 but so versatile and sounds as good as any of the medium priced delays (£100-£150) I've tried or owned before. Up to 6 seconds of delay, analogue, digital, reverse and modulated delay sounds, 2 memory slots for different sounds, tap tempo. Also its built like a tank has soft touch foot buttons. Its crazy good. Might be worth you guys checking out.
