Our expectations are too high. This is international football. You can't just mix it up playing different systems every game in order to look pretty - it solves nothing. Make a gameplan, determine form/fit players, then tweak for the knockouts. This is the stage where ingame management takes over. Plan A, Plan B. Southgate's line up against Slovakia will completely make or break his England career. If he's developed eyes, the cup is wide open for us. If not, expect to see an unrested Kane up top (if he was a horse he'd have been shot by now), siamese twins Phil Foden and a tired Bellingham in the same team sharing the same molecular space again. Expect to see Trippier hopping around on one leg again, even though he compromises the entire team to an absolutely fatal degree. You're right, its been a waste of two weeks. Our best players are now tired, and our best options off the bench haven't had the minutes together for him to risk it all at once in a knockout game. I’d argue he’s the nations best player and has been for a few years(at his position, I’d say he ranks higher than Kane would at his position compared to other world players around the world) . He can defend miles better than TAA and his attacking isn’t quite as good but still elite. As as Liverpool fan I’d love for Trent to play, but he just doesn’t fit. Unless you’d make a back 5 where he’s on the right and Walker is in the middle, there’s just no dropping Walker for me.

Since trippier has been shocking, instead of putting Trent at RB and Walker at LB, but Trent at LB and invert and let Walker stay in his position, at least until Shaw gets fully fit. As well as getting mainoo in for rice. Not to start, but rice is so negative in the buildup (as I’m sure Southgate told him to) but letting mainoo try to break the lines with his dribbling and passing ability. That’s just me idk
