Tim Tebow’s Magical Ride. The 2011 season for the Denver Broncos is one of the craziest, most improbable seasons of NFL football to date. Tim Tebow led magical comebacks against the Jets, Dolphins, Chargers, & Bears culminating in an incredible overtime win against the Steelers in the Wild Card round. This is the story of Tim Tebow’s NFL career.

Tebow's problem wasn't with talent or leadership. His teammates loved him and he more than proved he was talented. The problem was that he was so different than the archetypal QB of that era that nobody knew how to use him. Had he been paired up with a Bruce Arians or Andy Reid, he would have had a much longer career. I'm not saying he would have been a Pat Mahomes, but he would have definitely seen a fair bit of success.

@Skunk Ape Completing less than 50% of one's passes is a talent problem. Doesn't mean better coaching couldn't have helped him some, but there was more to it than just "nobody knew how to use him". Tebow struggled as a passer way beyond any coaching problems.

As a lifelong Steelers fan I’m still a fan of excellent talent & coaching in the entire NFL. Was an Elway fan since his first start, which was against the Steelers in 1983 just like I’m a fan today of Mahomes & Bengals QB Burrow. DT made our best look like fools on that play & I admired him for it. His death was sad & shocking. My Steelers won’t be contending for anything for while but they’ve acted arrogantly at times over the last decade so they had it coming. Besides it’s good for the NFL when other teams, like the Bengals & Bills work their way to excellence & reward loyal fans with great seasons & hopefully Lombardi trophies. Good luck this season. IMHO Wilson has plenty left in the tank.

@@guywholikescheese97 I still remember John Elway having the worst luck in his first three Super Bowls. The first was in his 4th year after he showed the world the full range of his talent in “the Drive” vs the Cleveland Browns. My college roommate was a Browns fan & died a thousand deaths as Elway ran, passed & impressed everyone. Then at the Super Bowl he faced the 1986 Giants with Lawrence Taylor, a rare yeR where a defensive player was league MVP. Brutal, nasty defense but Elway flashed greatness. Dan Reeves coached like his mentor Tom Landry. Didn’t really change anything for the Super Bowl. The Giants were just so good. Then the 1987 Redskins were another complete team with Joe Gibbs doing things like using a barely used RB to gash the Broncos defense. Finally the 1989 49ers were like a super team. They wanted to win that 4th Super Bowl without Bill Walsh who retired the year before. That offense was a juggernaut with Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, John Taylor & Roger Craig at RB should be in the Hall of Fame. They destroyed the Broncos with so many touchdowns. All three defenses focused on getting to Elway & Dan Reeves coaching didn’t seem to adjust. Poor Elway finally got 2 rings his last 2 years by Head Coach Mike as Shanahan running the same type of offense that his son Kyle runs as 49ers head coach & doesn’t require a lot from the QB. Knowing all that, imagine Elway sitting in the GM suite watching Tebow complete less than 10 passes & still beating the Steelers who went to the Super Bowl the previous season!! He was thinking of all he went through & how great he had to play to win playoff games & there’s Tebow with crazy throwing mechanics & unable to complete most passes playing so badly that the Steelers dared Tebow to beat them with his arm. And God smiled while Tebow did his crazy wind up motion & horrible footwork where he never set his feet & tossed a perfect strike to win the game. Elway was sick to his stomach. lol 😂. Tebow is truly a great human being but man, if he had been willing to make the changes in mechanics & footwork I believe that he would still be a starting QB today. 😀

I was living in Aurora, Co in 2011. When the 4th quarter started, the entire city stopped and watched. Everything was upside down! We won games we should've lost and we lost games we should have won. It was a hell of a ride. In spite of what the sports media establishment told you a LOT of people were sad to see Tebow get traded and Peyton Manning was brought in at QB. It was believed that Gaaawd himself was angry. ESPECIALLY, how we got eviscerated in the SUPER BOWL! But, what is past is prologue and have no fear Russell Wilson (QB who destroyed us in that Super Bowl) and we are living 2011 all over again!

"Tebow is Elway without any of the arm talent." Tebow's entire career can be summed up in that one statement - perfect. I was a Tebow fan; that dude could not throw the football, but he found a way to win the game. I'll take a game winner over a ball thrower. My Broncos have had ball throwers on the field since 2016 and we can't win shit. Thanks DT.

Tebow was an excellent deep ball thrower, but had UGLY short passes. The one where he overthrows Knowshawn Moreno that is 4 yards ahead of him by more than 1 yard was the worst, but TT lead the league in passes over 20 yards, and TT/DT were the leading receiver/QB pair in December 2011 and January 2012. I don't think John Fox was a good HC for Tebow's development. He looked better under Studesville!

I remember sitting in an army motor pool listening to the games on the radio saying “we are going to lose” every fucking weekend. Only to somehow pull it out. For the playoff game I was at a huge bar downtown and the place erupted like nothing I’ve ever seen (including winning the Super Bowl a few years later) with people throwing food and beers in the air on that pass to DT88 (rip). I just sat there bewildered. Jaw on the floor. It was literally a magical season. Thanks to Timmy Tebow.

He was obviously not a good thrower of the football, but somehow found a way to win week after week and then having a walk off touchdown pass in a playoff game? Shit was crazy. but he wasn't. As Perna stated, that 2011 season was a TON of luck. Lots of things broke the Broncos way and Tebow n the broncos were VERY lucky to not only be on the receiving end but to also be in a division that was won by an 8-8 team. And as Perna stated, that kind of play just isn't sustainable. Eventually, you have to stop relying on luck (like opposing RBs running out of bounds for no reason and stopping the clock... Yes Marion Barber, I'm looking at you) to be successful. IMO, Tebow is VERY lucky that his career stopped there. Cause had he been given the reins to another team, its likely his flaws come through and he goes from "A qb who won a playoff game but was never given a chance" to "Yea, he won a playoff game. But then he did absolutely nothing after that and became an afterthought".
@kenw2225
@kenw2225 4 ай бұрын
But that's the problem. We believe that luck was somehow sustainable for Tebow. Sometimes a teams energy is a psychological victory. Tebow seemed to have that energy. Should have played him next year and the go 9-7 or better. His energy was never ending. Many guys have that energy. Prob 8 guys on the field at all times at have energy, intensity , and stamina like they've rarely ever seen. But Tebow was contagious. It was an intangible most don't have.

It was very special - much more exciting than the Manning years. Tebow was an amazing combo of the guy that can overthrow Knowshawn by 2 yards on a 3 yard pass, and then at the same time leading the NFL in 20+ yard completions. I know people give him grief about his play style and religion and whatever else, but I have a soft spot for the guy and I like seeing him succeed. I remember some of the games Tebow won that year in the fourth quarter after looking like a wet noodle for three quarters plus was so insane it looked like a WWE match. The Broncos D was the real hero that season.

Great season - it was the most fun along with 2005. 1997, 1998 and 2015 were better though, but I would have loved us to bring Tebow back with Kubes in 2016!

It is really a bit weird he never got a true second chance. Usually its almost guaranteed a first round QB will have someone take a chance on them even if they don't work out on their first team.

@@extragoogleaccount6061 agreed especially with the titanic upside, I mean it made sense to get Peyton, but dealing away the guy who could have taken over after him so quickly was kinda dumb. All they really had to do was put in the time. But alas we will never know if Tebow would’ve put it together.

I live 30 minutes from Gainesville FL(gator country). Most fun we ever had as Gator fans rooting for Tebow. Proud of the guy. He was as competitive and driven as Michael Jordan. Can't blame Denver for going after Manning. Just wish they would have kept Tebow and let him learn under Manning for a couple seasons.

I remember listening to a Chicago sports radio station during that Jets comeback. The host was doing a monologue about Tebow that could only be described as a guy trying to make sense of incontrovertible evidence that leprechauns, unicorns, and ghosts are all real, intercut with real time updates like "and the Broncos are now in Jets territory, and we all know what's gonna happen". It had the feeling of an early episode of Welcome to Night Vale.

Thanks Perna, that was truly a magical season. If they weren't messing with Tebow's throwing motion and just let him be I think he would have been fine. It was sad to see him ousted for Manning, especially because Manning really struggled, and Tebow never had another chance. Good nostalgia trip, he had all of us believing there was a way, and you nailed it, Satan came in and shit on everything. Good jokes too, I can't really remember them at this point, but I laughed pretty hard.

Outstanding episode! As a Broncos fan, I was constantly telling people that year that Tebow was, in fact, a terrible QB. It was great fun watching those comeback wins but it was also fucking agonizing watching Tebow try and throw a football with any kind of consistent accuracy. All of that being stated, that playoff win against the Steelers was maybe the most fun I ever had watching a Broncos game. Especially because I was watching it with two Steelers fans who were both in a state of shock after the winning play. Ah, the pure joy of it!

The win streak was ridiculous. Every game it seemed like they'd be down two scores with five minutes left and then he would just take over. And like the video said, some other weird plays and special teams success would also happen to help make the comebacks possible.
