And the whole time it was basically a deliberate hedge for this each situation. Best case was Kirk is great and Penix gets longer to learn. Worse case was Kirk either gets injured again or sucks really bad and Penix is forced to come in earlier than expected. What they ended up getting wasnt the worst outcome, but wasn't the best possible outcome either. I'm sure they wish they'd gotten at least one good season from Kirk as a starter. But frankly, depending on how good Penix ends up being this can still work out quite well for them. Yeah they overpaid for Cousins, but in the grade scheme of things, an overpay for what's essentially one regular season of average QB pay, while giving yourself the best odds of ensuring you have a starting caliber QB for the future is totally worth it. Not having a starting caliber QB is far more costly in the long-run. And if Penix ends up being a solid starting QB like most of the other QBs selected in round 1 of last years draft, it will still have been the best decision they could have made considering the financial and roster talent risks associated with having bad QB play. Especially since last years draft class was a bit of an anomaly in terms over both overall QB talent and the level of experience that most of those QBs had. The COVID year basically provided the chance for ATL to get a 1st rd QB with a year more experience than possible for pretty much any other QB draft class. With the season afterwords having likely a worse draft pick and a significantly worse crop of potentially draftable QBs.

If you're going to sign Cousins, then you maybe take a QB in the THIRD ROUND like the Eagles with Hurts. If you're going to take a QB in the 1st round, then DON'T SIGN Cousins who is coming off an achilles injury. Fantastic video Perna, your most phallic yet! I do think there is a chance the Falcons play hard ball in return to Kirk. 65mil dead cap hit VS 40 Mil backup QB. Sure he wouldn’t want to backup but make him put his nice guy reputation at stake by sitting out, or waive the no trade clause for the first team to need him (possibly due to injury in early season). I don’t see how Atlanta loses in that scenario as they’d still have a chance to get out of paying the majority of the contract while only being on the hook for 15mil more after the 35mil deadcap cost in 2026 if Kirk refuses to waive the claus/no offers. Doesn’t help Kirk’s leverage that he doesn’t have a year to sit out either. All that being said I don’t have faith in my falcons to do that. Again, fantastic video Perna, I really enjoyed this one!

6:04 wow Matt Schaub another ATL Falcon. Maybe it's a Falcon thing? 😮😮😮

Falcons have had years of QBs with arms you probably wouldn't describe as a cannon. The most exciting thing about seeing Penix out there is seeing someone with such a strong arm. It gives Falcons fans something different to watch and it changes the offense.

Peyton stopped taking that HGH that's why he was so bad his final season.

Just ordered LMNT! I'd order the coffee if it came in Keurig little thingies. I only drink coffee if I can destroy the planet one little plastic cup at a time. I'm the worst...I already know. Thanks though...Fucking love this channel. In my top 3 sports channels. Laugh my arse off constantly!

So weird how hard he dropped off in just 5 weeks. They has to be something that explains that. Idk maybe he lost it. Who knows.

It's finally looking like my "terrible" take of the Falcons drafting Penix as smart... Might have actually been smart. I saw it similar to the Chiefs with Smith. Only problem is they have big red and the Falcons have.... Yeah

Falcons signed cousins to a 200+ MILLION dollar contract. This is not an Alex Smith situation fella😂

Future Pittsburgh steeler. Calling it now they're going to sign him to the Russell Wilson deal

To anyone who knows football, it's pretty obvious what the problem was....play calling. The Falcons called play action at one of the lowest rates in the league. Robinson would rather do what he wants versus what his quarterback is good at which is play action passing. He said…”Hey, we'd love to rip off this many play-actions’, and then this facet of the pass game is working. Well, let's just stick with this, with our quick game and our drop back [implying more pistol].” Per PFF in week 1-9, Kirk was top 10 when he did do play action. Per Jay Gruden (Kirk's ex-coach).....“He still threw the ball accurately, but he forced the balls in the coverage. A lot of the routes and a lot of the plays that they're running, receivers had options just come out of their cut and break it off to the outer or stick it down in the zone, and that's really not Kirk's forte. He likes to know where people are going so he can anticipate throws; he sees windows and lets it fly, but when he's not sure where the receivers are going to be, he holds onto it a little bit long and just waits or throws it and has an interception.”

I still think it makes more sense to keep Kirk as a backup. It saves them money for next year. Penix has an injury history.

It's insane how Kirk had an amazing October, then completely fell off a cliff. Coming off an Achilles injury the previous year at his age, I'm not surprised. I think the Falcons were so shook from the Ridder-Heinicke experience that they signed Kirk and drafted Penix, just in case of another starter fall-off.

The Netflix show really highlighted that Cousins is not insane enough to win in the NFL postseason. His agent is too good at getting him $$ for his team's own good too.

With the volatility of NFL players (eg Derubme Watson), I don't understand why GM's take such a risk with guaranteed contracts.
@MostlyElectrolytesКүн бұрын
I have said from the day of the draft that this was the best move. If you are sitting at number 8 and a franchise QB falls to your lap you draft him. Period. Penix was the second best QB in the draft behind Daniels and that is not a slight against Williams who is an amazing talent with a super high ceiling, but that's just how good Penix was in college. And nothing against Kirk, but with one playoff win under his belt you don't pin your entire franchise on him. Not saying he's not a really good QB, but let's not act like he's got 3 rings in his jewelry box.

So he didn’t win an Oscar/Super Bowl? My man still secured the bag for all eternity and made people tune in/sit down in their seats. It’s entertainment at the end of the day and yeah, I liked that.

Someone in a Falcons Jersey imploded in the second half of an effort, and looked from the outside like they inexplicably forgot how to play. And, somehow, you are surprised by this. Are you not familiar with the Falcons Franchise? This is part of putting on the uniform. This is Falcons tradition: Elevate the hopes of the true fans, and then dash them to pieces expertly in the 3rd Quarter, and then fall short in the 4th Quarter - all while both somehow leaving everyone flabbergasted and yet offer a glimmer of false hope right up until the cruel end. Being a Falcons Fan is to engage in Masochism.

If Kirk doesn't retire, he should be a backup the rest of his career. He doesn't have "it" anymore.
@Droid668920 сағат бұрын
"He looked like an instant upgrade" I didn't watch the game, but his passer rating against one of the worst teams was over 10 points lower than Cousins' has been for the year. That seems like a downgrade any way you slice it

How soon before Cousins becomes the starting Browns QB?
@Kudeghraw22 сағат бұрын
They have 100 million reasons to cut him. That money was for Kirk to come in and chuck for 25-30 TDs and 4500 yards (like in 2022) leading to a guaranteed playoff run, not to come in and trip over feet heading into the playoffs.
