This is Indigenous Australian gospel. Dr G. is singing of his country. Aboriginal people are of their land - spiritually and physically one. Dr G. was singing of his heart and home, his heaven and Earth. His truth is so beautiful and pure that it is only fitting that he gave it voice in the language of his place. It is something most of us will never be blessed to understand and yet cannot help be viscerally in awe of.

"Bayini" are light-skinned mythological beings. In literature, the first non-Aboriginal visitors to the Arnhem Land coast are referred to as Bayini. In songs that record and preserve their traditions, Aboriginal people of Arnhem land tell of the Bayini gypsies with copper coloured skin who visited their shores. Yolngu are deep thinking people. The words in the song refer to many families sitting together on the beach looking to waves and sea, the horizon, contemplating. "Long ago from over the horizon the Bayini came to Yolngu country."

The peoples of what is now eastern Indonesia , from Sulawesi, and elsewhere, had a depth of interaction with the peoples of the Top End that we shall probably never know enough about. But it was prolonged and deep. There is evidence that Islam was successfully implanted in various areas, and, then, immediately extirpated by the British.

Well said, Jo. Delta has been vilified in the industry for so long by people who have no idea what the hell she's been through and she continues to shine. Gurrumul was a one in a 7.6 billion artist! This song by Dr G and sung with Delta should be Australia's national anthem. And even as a non-indigenous Australian, I could always 'feel' the song when sung by Gurrumul in such gorgeous, soul-searching tones. I never did understand the lyrics though until I heard this duet, so thank you Delta for offering your beautiful voice and explaining what Gurrumul is singing in such a vocally aesthetic and dignified way. I'm with you brother, it makes me cry, every time I hear the emotion of it. A sadly beautiful vocalization that is filled with melancholy. Just the most beautiful song on the planet sung by gentle, beautiful people.

She was basically singing (the English part) as a translation.. Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu was an Aboriginal Australian musician of the Yolŋu peoples. He sang stories of his land both in Yolŋu languages such as Gaalpu, Gumatj or Djambarrpuynu, a dialect related to Gumatj, and in English. Although his solo career brought him wider acclaim, he was also formerly a member of Yothu Yindi and later of Saltwater Band.
