Russell is a real gem, the comparison with Aaron Neville is a great compliment. Unfortunately due to bad broadcast regulation Australian media is now full of USA content. Australian artist's and crew have a had time earning a living because of this, along with the Americanization of our cluture.

We didn't get colour tv til 1975 in Australia. I'm 55 & my mum bought her first colour tv in 1977. The late 60s to mid 80s produced some amazing Australian music. Aussies in the conservative 1950s grew up with what we call 'The cultural cringe." We felt our culture was worthless next to Britain & Europe. Then there was, especially under Prime Minister Gough Whitlam, a bold belief that we were capable of making our own unique culture. Then you get incredible Australian rock & great movies like Mad Max & Picnic at Hanging Rock. The history of Australian art has been a journey of finding our own voice.

One of the best moments I've ever experienced in a long radio career was Russell picking up an acoustic guitar in front of me in my studio and knocking this song out of the park (to use a very American expression!) Must find and upload it. :) Agree with other commenters, his voice is even better today. Such a humble, brilliant guy. You mentioned "legend" - absolutely spot on. He is a living legend.

"The Real Thing" is the debut single by Australian singer Russell Morris, released in 1969. Written by Johnny Young and produced by Ian "Molly" Meldrum,[1] it was a huge hit in Australia and has become an Australian rock classic. It also achieved success in the United States, reaching the top of the charts in Chicago, Houston, and New York City.[2]

We in Oz had to wait until 1973 or 1974 to get colour TV.....so some of our best early music performances are in B&W. You have to react to Russell Morris 'The Real Thing', psychedelic pop rock.....a beauty. It was produced by Ian 'Molly' Meldrum, who went on to be Australia's best known music 'guru' and host of the biggest music show in the country, Countdown. Russell is still going, his last album came out in 2019, a rock album but his previous three albums were blues. Very talented man.

Russell Morris has been one of my favourite singers for decades. Do yourself a favour and listen to anything and everything you can find on him. Up until late last year he was performing in a supergroup known as the Fabulous Caprettos (GOAT) Greatest Of All Time. Most recently the band included Russell Morris, Jack Jones/Irwin Thomas of Southern Sons, Rai Thistlethwayte (of Thirsty Merc ) and Dave Gleeson of The Screaming Jets. With Jackie Barnes (son of Jimmy Barnes on drums) and Jason Vorherr (Bass player from Daryl Braithwaite’s touring band. Daryl was an original member of the band but was replaced by Dave Gleeson after deciding to perform solo again). The four frontmen all perform on stage together playing a selection of each member’s hit songs. It is a great concert to see. In 2024 Russell also performed at the Opera House (Sydney) and Hamer Hall (Melbourne) with a 56 (?) peice orchestra to a sold out house at both venues and then later returned for two encore performances at each venue. There is a CD and DVD recording of these shows. BRILLIANT!

To get into the American music scene back then, you had to pay for your management to go to the USA and promote the band, then you had to pay to get a tape played for the management of a big act that you might get a tour supporting. You could try it on your own, but without the finance, that is very difficult. The bands that made it, Goanna and others, they were the ones who were lucky and got that very rare break. Chisel tried and failed in the USA, so did the Divynals and Mental as Anything. The list goes on. I know that Wendy and the Rocketts manager went to the USA several times, trying to get her a support on a major tour. They ended up getting booked for the European leg of a Brian Adams tour, he threw them off the tour after they were called back for encores in Berlin. They sat around in London and ended up supporting ZZ Top. I should mention that Wendy was charting higher in Berlin than Brian Adams at the time.

Saw Russell Morris in a small pub back in 1990 in Bacchus Marsh Australia...no more than 50 people. He sung the place down. Amazing talent and he's never stopped working. So much respect for him.

At the beginning of December 2019, my wife and I had the pleasure of seeing him perform here in Melbourne. First half of the gig he played songs off his most recent album and his voice was great. The second half he sang all his great hits including this. When he began singing Sweet Sweet Love, I was overcome with emotion and nostalgia. His voice sounded exactly the same as when I first heard it back in the seventies! I just sat there stunned. For someone in their seventies to be singing like that just blew my mind. Russell Morris is still one of my all time favourites.

As a pre teen, I grew up listening to Russel. I reckon I'd have bawled too. ❤

@@suzeprimrose-7466 Within a few seconds of him starting to sing that song I choked up. First heard him when I was about 13-14 in the late seventies. First song I ever heard him sing was the "Real Thing". Blew my mind completely at the time.

You need to listen to the whole song without stopping all the time, then react. His voice to this day is still superb. He still tours the country performing.

I enjoy having it broken down to explain the bits I wouldn't notice for myself. Scrolling back and forth from a delayed commentary would be a hassle

@ ThatSingerReactions More than 50 years after Russell's breakout hit in 1969, 'The Real Thing', he has just released his latest album, "The Dreams Of Jack Chrome'. He is still going strong. The new album also features ex-Aussie, Rick Springfield.

I only saw Russell Morris performing live last Saturday night. He's still got it at 75. He sang a bunch of his hits, including this song.

Russell is alive and well. His last album shark mouth was only a couple of years ago. He's changed his style with age though. He was fantastic in the 70s in Melbourne and l was fortunate to see him and his band live in a pub one Saturday night
