He was born on Elcho Island, Northern Territory Australia and is of the Yolngu people. He taught himself to play multiple instruments and plays a right hand strung guitar left handed. He sings in Yolngu of country and of his life, songs that he wrote. His music touches the soul of all Aussies. He was greatly loved but sadly passed four years ago. Indigenous Australians have a uniqueness in their voices that's very special. A guide to pronunciation, if there are double letters such as Gurr, the emphasis is on that. The rest just flows.

You dont need to virtue signal here. I dont disagree with all you say but as a 50 something white Australian I have had it with the woke attitude of white man being bad, its not the case of all. You cannot paint everyone with the same brush. I have known Indigenous Australians since I was a small child, I grew up playing football with them as I grew up on a Housing commission estate. I grew up in the bronx and have met many great people who I still call mates including many indigenous people. And I can tell you that they dont like your virtue signaling either, they want their brothers and sisters to get off their butts and create a better life for each other and not continue to take the handouts, the handouts I might add from a guilty government that only do this in order to keep them quiet.

I want to know who the 3 people that disliked this are?! Like seriously?? You’d have to be a bigot to hate this. As his talent and voice is amazing.

I have seen him live and didn't know who he was until that night. He touches your soul and have never had goosebumps like it since. He was born blind and taught himself guitar and I think he was also the drummer for yothu yindi.

Love Gurrumul's music and voice. He taught himself to play guitar - I think he was left handed so played the guitar in reverse/backwards (how do you say that??).

Yes you are correct right hand guitar up side down.

Being blind he taught himself to play and never saw anyone else handle a guitar so he ended up playing upside down literally.

This wonderful man was blind, humble and self taught. It proves you don't need to understand the words to feel the song. There is a stunning duet with Gurrumul and our Delta Goodrum singing "Bayini". I swear it will give you goosebumps the size of ostrich eggs!

Thanks Soo much for reacting to Dr G. A blind first nations Australian. The voice of an angel, so soothing. Proves music transcends language. Can't understand any words but love every note. Unfortunately gone too soon, just as he was getting the appreciation he deserves. Self taught the guitar and singing in his indigenous tongue. Bridging communities.

Treaty - Yothu Yindi ( Mandawuy Yunupingu - Geoffrey's uncle) Great band. Geoffrey played with them for a time. Unfortunately both are now deceased. Also... chk out the Fire FIght Australia concert with Brian May (Queen featured on the concert with Adam Lambert) Olivia Newton John, Farnsey and Mitch Tambo (Indigenous artist who performed You're the Voice - worth checking out also at some stage ! ) kzbin.info/www/bejne/oqLNf4qrgpetY7M We have a ton of excellent talent here in Oz... You will be busy for a while !!

@@1holibill And they seriously did... I believe these guys charting actually helped us get the version of the National Anthem that we now use in school (well most of our schools in my state use it at assemblies etc) - it was a long time coming but I think artists like this showing how music can bring a country together helped a heap in bringing it to the kids.

If you watch video of Australian indigenous people talking you'd get why the singing by some indigenous artists have some unique sounds/qualities to it. There's lots and lots of different indigenous dialects accross Australia but such a unique language.

Thanku so very much in supporting Australian Music this is one of our loved Aboriginal singers Gurrumul from Elcho Island Northern Territory Australia , I was lucky to see him perform before he died acouple of years later , his voice is so unique, haunting and flows straight through you .. Every song has meaning and shares culture and life .. He is blind and if u look closely he plays the guitar upside down, he taught himself to play and overcome all the obstacles that stood in front of him ... Rest in Peace Gurrumul 🙏🙏🙏🇦🇺💜💜💜🌅🔥
