Close your eyes and try to aim at a dummy. Do this a bunch in different positions. If you consistently overshoot, turn your sensitivity down. If you consistently undershoot, turn it up.

Something I notice is that my movement gets halted when I play with motions. Like all of the sudden my dumb brain can’t do all the gymnastics I do with my squid when playing with sticks . So it feels like I’m trading mobility over aiming or viceversa . But I’m gonna learn this

Things to note with split-joycon playstyle. This is how ive been playing since splat 2 release and are a charger main. When using motion controls, your RIGHT HAND JOYCON is the controller actually using the motion controls. So the easiest way i found to play split-joycons is by designating your hands to seperate roles. Your left hand is designated all movement based options. Your right hand is designated to actually aiming/camera and shooting. You are only waving around your right hand to actually use the motion controls to only shoot and weapon options. Be careful with your sensitivity thou, especially with split joycon. Other than that, most of what is covered in the video is mostly the same as split joycon. Controller style boils down mostly to preference and choose what is more comfortable for you. Both have their pros and cons and choose whats best for you.

I've been playing split-joycons nearly the entirety of my Splatoon 2 gameplay. The right joy-con being the "aiming" one just came naturally. All in all, it just took some practice and it clicked for me instantly - I'm sure others can learn quickly as well :)

I actually like the way split joycons feel. It feels better than my pro controller to be honest lol! The only reasons I don't want to make the switch is because 1. I already have muscle memory for the pro controller and 2. I don't want to deal with joycon drift.

Definitely the most underrated control scheme, IMHO it feels much more natural, akin to keyboard & mouse, or wii remote and nunchuk. I feel so uncomfortable when the stick I'm using to move, or buttons I'm using to shoot, move to awkward angles because I'm rotating a whole controller. I pray that splatoon 4 still has split control scheme option... 😂

It took me like 2 weeks and i used chargers to learn in turf war. Was able to get to A+ 3/4 modes within like 2-3 weeks with chargers only. Never looked back

I recommend starting motion on a low sensitivity, and then moving it up more and more as you get more comfortable with micromovements. It's what I did and I got fairly decent at motion controls in a few days

When I played Splatoon 1, I was a strict stick controls main cause I could just never get used to motion controls. However, come Splatoon 2, I essentially forced myself to use motion controls and now I’m really glad I made the switch because my performance has improved very much !

i was the same with splatoon 2 and 3. 2,i just couldn't get used to motion, no matter what. my aim was rather alright though. in 3, i don't know why i switched, it just kinda.. happened. still getting used to aim, always tempted to switch back because i'm pretty good at stick, but i'm trying.

I had the opposite, with Splatoon 1 on the Wii U I had an easier time with gyro, and a harder time with the sticks, the size gave me an easier time imagining and using it as a steering wheel for my camera movement than any other controller, and the form factor with the sticks near the top and the screen in the middle forced you to hold the controller much more straight than angled like most other controllers, which for me was good for gyro but bad for everything else, as a result of the stick placement my inputs on the X-axis were directed upwards enough that the inputs felt inconsistent or were ignored due to the Y-axis lock Splatoon 2 and 3 i use the pro controller but Splatoon 2 i shut off gyro outside of singleplayer, where as in 3 im forcing myself to relearn and rely on gyro a lot more, especially for multiplayer

Another reason why motion is better is that you can jump while moving the camera. This is almost impossible to do with just the right stick as pressing the jump button and tilting the right stick both require you to use your right thumb (unless you're somebody that holds your controller in a very interesting way).

The tactic I used through all 3 games was I started at default sensitivity, then progressively work my way up to now, at 5:5 sens. It’s really helpful as you get used to the gameplay and motion in general

I’m not a newbie to twin-stick shooters or Splatoon, but prior to watching this video, I tried to aim with stick and gyro for every kill and found it quite challenging to his a precise spot while moving. This was seriously helpful for me. I normally play on PC, so going from m/kb to the Switch controller was daunting. When I first tried to use motion controllers, I got frustrated with feeling slow with turning, but just learning that the left stick can be used for that made a world's difference. Since splatoon 2, i’ve used the stick because i’ve been thrown off by not being able to use the Y axis on the left stick. I hold my controller upright and was thrown off by the fact that my character always looked upwards. When I started playing Splatoon 3 (I hadn't played any other Splatoon games before) I had a controller that didn't support motion controls, and I was stuck not being able to look up and I only realized on a story mode level where you had to get a button, which I couldn't reach because I couldn't look up. I found out how to turn on stick controls and had to play with them for months. Finally got a controller that supports motion controls and I figure out how to use them in like an hour. I just remember loading up splatoon 1 and feeling the motion controls and I was instantly elated at how much fun I was ready to have with a console shooter. I've always been nerfed against my friends and such when playing shooters on console as I mainly played PC. Going to gyro control from mouse control was insanely intuitive for me and its the main reason I still casually play Splatoon quite often as It feels smooth and intuitive, I don't feel nerfed from switching to a controller.

Started running motion controls at launch (of Splatoon3). Pretty much did what you'd suggested, but as I got a little better I started entering turf wars knowing I was going to get my butt handed to me. That made for a great learning experience (the one I wasn't getting from the cpu controlled counterparts). thanks for this guide, I played Splat2 back when there were still splatfests going on, very inconsistently and VERY casually, salmon run and turf war (only got as far as level 46), had a ton of fun but this time I'd really like to actually LEARN how to play and also get into ranked battles, and of course use the game a looot more given I feel like I BARELY touched Splat2 by playing a mere 200h... I got Splatoon 3 a few months ago and feel like I hit a brick wall with stick aiming so I looked up guides on how to use gyro controls. Will definitely practice this when I play the game again

Fantastic explanation. I realized I've been playing wrong by using the right analog for horizontal aiming. Going to give this a try. Great advice to not get frustrated and play story mode to get used to motion also.

thanks dude! been watching the channel since splat 1but splat 3 is my first time playing a game in the series. went with motion controls on your suggestion but hadn’t seen this video in time! basically just figured it out myself in the practice range but every one of your points gels with every step I had to learn to get better.

The comparison to holding it like a truck driver steering wheel alone made me so much better...also knowing that its a nightmare to use in handheld mode, cause that's exactly what i was doing 💀 thanks for the guide and i hope now i can achieve my e liter 4k dreams (after a comfy story mode stint...i hope to come back an update this comment with news of my success!)

Btw, while Splatoon doesn't let you reset your "neutral position" (position where your controller doesn't detect motion input) if it's held even just a little bit downwards (pressing Y will reset it if it's pointing upwards), you can do so from within the Switch's settings. Go to the Settings menu on your Switch home screen, scroll down to "Controllers and Sensors", and select "Calibrate Motion Controls." Then select "Calibrate Controllers". You can then just hold your controller the way you normally would (instead of setting it on a flat surface), and it'll set that position as your neutral position. FYI, generally it's disadvantageous to hold the controller downwards, but if you hold it at just a slight downwards angle (I've ended up holding mine maybe 10 to 20 degrees below completely flat), it's not a huge issue so long as there is still room to tilt it further downward for aiming purposes.

I like to describe it like this: Imagine trying to balance a broom on the palm of your hand, and you are allowed to move your entire arm and wrist to stabilize the broom. Depending on how long the broom is, it's actually not that difficult. That's gyro controls. Now imagine trying to balance a broom on the tip of your thumb, and you are _not_ allowed to move your arm or wrist. I guarantee this will be more difficult. That's stick controls. I'll admit that gyro isn't as good as mouse controls, but on a spectrum from sticks to mouse, it leans closer to mouse controls.

I'm not gonna lie, I like gyro a lot more than mouse. With gyro, you always have a base resting position to return to - on mouse, not so much. It's gonna be harder to pull off insane trickshots, of course, but that's usually a style thing and less of a normal gameplay thing

@@weefslider I disagree. Gyro effectively tracks the position of the controller in 3d, while a mouse effectively tracks the position in 2d. A 3rd dimension means 1 more degree of freedom for the error in your aim. Also, your aiming landscape (your screen) is 2d. As a specific instance of this, note that keeping a controller fixed in a single location in 3d is more difficult than keeping a mouse fixed in 2d.

Gyro only translates to 2 dimensions of movement, it's just that unlike a mouse which uses a linear mapping to linear movement, gyro uses rotations mapped to linear movement, which is a trigonometric function. It's still just 2 linear movements it translates to, at the end of the day. Mouse has a firm pad for stabilization. However, I believe gyro can be just as good if in the right hands.

Making it unavailable with a mouse pad provides (like you said) stabilization. I think gyro could perhaps be competitive with mouse, but I still think it’s at a fundamental disadvantage.

@@JM-us3fr There's a couple of points that I'm not following here. 1) You say that your "aiming landscape" is 2D, and Jaxon Holden said that a gyro is translating from rotational motion to linear motion. Both of those statements are incorrect. Yes, your display is flat, but the game is rendered in 3 dimensions. You're not aiming at a 2D plane, you're aiming in a 3D space. Also, the in-game camera is controlled via rotations. With mouse, you are translating linear movement to a 3 dimensional rotation, which is not 1:1. There are inconsistencies with this translation, which is why so many games require completely different mouse settings and why there's so much disagreement between inverted/normal Y axis. With gyro, the rotation of the controller * the sensitivity is exactly 1:1 with the rotation of the camera in game. It's objectively more accurate than using a mouse. 2) You say the 3rd rotational dimension introduces error in aim, but it doesn't. At least, not in Splatoon. All rotation of the controller is measured relative to gravity, which is a constant axis. Your horizontal aim uses both yaw and roll based on their rotation relative to gravity. If your controller is perfectly perpendicular to gravity, then roll gets completely ignored. The game doesn't drift from this calculation in the same way your eyeballs don't drift when you rotate your head. You state that it is difficult to keep a controller in a fixed position in 3D space, and sure that might be true but position does not matter for gyro controls. Linear movement does not affect rotational input. It's the same with a mouse: spinning a mouse around the sensor doesn't move the cursor. If you rotate your mouse to be along the diagonal of the mouse pad, moving it along that diagonal will still give you a horizonal input bc you're moving the mouse horizontally relative to its position. If you move your controller up in front of your face instead of resting near your knees, then rotation will still work as rotation bc the linear movement is ignored. No drift is involved in linear motion.

Honestly, the part that annoys me about motion is that it locks you out of using up down on the right stick, which isn't a thing I've encountered before, even in games that have motion included

Personally in both 2 and 3 I always play using the joy-cons clicked into the plastic grip, even though I have a pro controller. The reason is, I put more hours into Splatoon in the wii u than probably every Switch game combined, and the squareness feels the most like the wii u gamepad :) old habits die hard!

It's been an odd transition coming from playing exclusively keyboard and mouse for shooting games until now. On m&k I find it better to use the lower sensitivity options so as to not have to strain my wrist for small adjustments, but with the motion controls I've had to use significantly higher sensitivity so as to be able to make the faster flick motions I'm used to.

I spent two years of Splatoon 2 in handheld mode before getting monitors and a capture card. I really loved the motion controls in handheld :) Made charger sniping feel a lot more satisfying lol. Hmm, the adventure mode camera is a pretty good comparison. I'll have to keep that in mind whenever someone asks how to use motion controls.
