As a 35 year old mature student also at the University of Glasgow, I didn't attend Freshers or join any clubs either. I'm very antisocial when it comes to my degree. I'll still talk to anyone. But I don't go out my way to make friends, that's probably because I've also got a job and family to juggle with too. It's not the same experience for everyone. Independent learning and study is crucial to your degree. I'm going into my Junior Honours year studying both History & Economic and Social History, I still feel proud to be part of #teamuofg

I went to a secondary school in Scotland, which was a terrible experience. I basically had to teach myself at School, so attending uni was actually a step up in service for me, as the lecturers know what they were talking about, unlike my teachers at school, who were utter crap..

Hey this is really useful. Ive applied to French and Spanish, and I’ve accepted my place at Glasgow so I’ll be starting in September if everything goes according to plan with corona obvs. I’ll be doing Spanish from beginners. Did you find it was very intense? I’m guessing it will be the same for all languages at beginner the intensity
@julietcairns
@julietcairns 4 жыл бұрын
Adib yeah I found beginners French pretty difficult, it was very fast paced and I think they kinda presume that you already know stuff even though it is beginners. I think though if you did a lot of work yourself and outside of class though that it wouldn’t be too bad :)

After watching the video and reading some of the comments, I'm curious. Do they make you do a language as well as your major or is it a separate thing you have to add, like a double major. I'm from America and want to apply in the next few years for music but also have a love for german and would be willing to double major if I had to, but I was just curious about how it works there.
@julietcairns
@julietcairns 3 жыл бұрын
hey, hopefully I can explain this well but my degree is a double honours in English and film & tv, but here we have to do 3 subjects in first and second year of uni to make up the credits so I chose French as my elective (3rd subject) for first year. So if you choose to do a single honours you would have to take 2 electives in first and second year, one of which could be German or anything else really :)

@julietcairns
@julietcairns 4 жыл бұрын
hey, i didn't find it hard to get in because i had the entry requirements for the courses i applied for so it just depends on your grades. you don't get to choose who you live with, and there isn't really a campus as such at glasgow but most of the accommodation options are around a 20 minute walk away from the uni. i'm not really sure how things would differ for international students unfortunately but i'm sure if you email the uni someone should be able to help :)

this is a great video, thank you for it! I applied for smth back in October that I do not want to study anymore, I got accepted (conditional offer) for that course, should I accept my place (if I get the grades ofc) or should I say no to it? This course has three classes already, I wouldn't be able to add a third choice that I would like more anymore :( I definitely do not want to drop out after a few weeks, and I still can study in other countries but I'd love to study in Scotland still... Should I bite the bullet and study smth that I do not want to study in a country that I love or study smth that I love in a country that I still like?

V Hehl thank you! as far as I know once you get into the uni you can generally change courses within the first few weeks if you aren’t enjoying it. I’m not 100% sure though if it’s the same for every subject, I think your best bet would be to try and email someone from admissions to check :)

I had overall a very good experience but sadly I faced some discrimination from the Senate whilst they mishandled dealing with an abusive relationship I was the victim of, and they unfairly intervened in a defamation lawsuit against my abuser too (staff members involved were Prof Paul Bishop of Earth Sciences, Helen Butcher, Helen Clegg and Jack Aitken). Unfortunately there was a lot of classism and ableism (I have autism and was suffering from pretty severe PTSD too) 😔
