Thanks for the nostalgic trip through the 1930’s. We were buying hours in Piper Cubs when the airport manage bought a Ryan monoplane. Beautiful in polished aluminum.

great video about a great plane. Ben, I like your philosophy and outlook concerning old things...and old airplanes. The appreciation for the beautiful, for proportion, for the worthiness of things seems to have gone in the area of the cheeseburger!

Dear David, Mine also. It is one of many "Art Deco" aircraft of that era and that design style is my absolute favorite. If you are not aware of it, that cut you watched is just part of one of my docs regarding Classic/Vintage airplanes. You can find them all here: www.fitzvideo.com/Pages/Launch_ThatThey.htm Blue Skies & Tailwinds!™ The Sky Surfer

I am the producer of this segment. Ben is one of many great interviews and great planes in my series, "That They Might Fly Again". KZbin is a fragmented, randomized cluster foxtrot. The best way to see my movies is to start from my website (www.fitzvideo.com). my father had a flight school at FLABOB airport in Riverside California for 28 years. that airport is the home of EAA chapter 1. it was also at one time home of Bill Turners REPEAT AIRCRAFT. THEY RESTORED OR REBUILT MANY VERY EARLY VINTAGE AIRCRAFT THERE. IT IS/WAS A SMALL COUNTRY TYPE AIRPORT IN UNCONTROLLED AIRSPACE AT THE BASE OF MOUNT ROUBIDEAUX. I HOPE I SPELLED IT CORRECTLY. I LEARNED TO FLY OUT OF THIS SMALL AIRPORT. IT IS VERY UNIQUE FOR ITS TURN TO FINAL AS THERE IS A 50-60 FOOT TALL WHITE CROSS THAT GETS YOUR ATTENTION WHEN TURNING BASE. MY FATHER TRAINED MANY FUTURE PILOTS THERE. MANY WITH LITTLE OR NO CASH FOR LESSONS. HE WASN'T ONE TO HOLD UP ANYONE LEARNING OVER A FEW BUCKS. MANY TIMES STUDENTS WOULD PAY FOR THEIR LESSONS IN HELPING AROUND THE SCHOOL, ANSWERING PHONES FUELING HIS PLANES CLEANING THE OFFICE, ALL SORTS OF SMALL CHORES. HE RETIRED IN 2001 AFTER THE DEATH OF MY STEP MOTHER, SOLD THE SCHOOL AND MOVED BACK TO HIS AND OUR HOME STATE OF OKLAHOMA. HE PASSED AWAY DEC. 22 2014. I HAVE OFTEN WANDERED HOW MANY OF HIS STUDENTS ARE FARING TODAY. ARE THEY STILL FLYING, ARE THEY COMMERCIAL, PRIVATE CHARTER PILOTS. BUT I SHARE YOUR LOVE OF OLDER AIRPLANES AND A DAY LONG AGO WHEN AVIATION WAS A WONDEROUS THING, AN AMAZING FEAT. AND AS PEDESTRIAN AS THIS BEAUTY YOU SHOW US HERE. THANKS FOR THE VIDEO AND MY OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE MINE AND MY FATHERS STORY.

Nice to hear about your Father. I have never been to FLABOB but know about it. If I get another chance to go to the area I will certainly drop by.

just an add on i have a set of 1933 Pietenpol Aircamper plans i plan to build from soon i hope. i have built a true quarter scale version exactly as its built on the plans. i have it through the complete airframe minus engine and covering. as of now i have over 900 building hours on it.

My neighbor has a Pietenpol as does another friend of ours. They fly well but it is hard getting in the front seat.

@@BrianFitzGerald-TheSkySurfer thats what i have heard. also have heard because of the undercambered wing they have a tendency to flat spin. dont know it to be fact just what an old timer told me in about 2000.

I love these video series, but why in the world they will not let us hear any of these beautiful engines running is beyond me. It's like serving a piece of fine sour dough bread with no freaking butter. The music is great but let us hear the engines as well!!!

Frankly, most of the time you hear engines sounds from planes that are shot with a telephoto lens - the sounds are dubbed in - not live and most likely taken from some other airplane. When the sounds are too far away or covered with WIND NOISE in the microphone, I just leave it out.
