The one million mile Toyota Tundra Story. In 2007 a man by the name of Victor Sheppard purchased a new Toyota Tundra and proclaimed he would put a million miles on it...nine years later he did, reaching 1,020,130 miles on the original engine and transmission.
Shortly after, Toyota came calling. They wanted to buy his truck, tear it down, and study it to see what they could learn for future production development. But Victor needed some convincing to give up his truck.
Incredibly, Toyota valued the truck at eight thousand dollars, which is quite the retained value considering the truck had an M S R P of twenty six thousand, eight hundred, and fifty dollars in 2007. But in the end, Victor decided to swap out his one million mile Tundra for a brand new 2016 Toyota Tundra Double Cab Limited courtesy of Toyota.

Maybe because 26k in that time is equivalent to 60k now since the minimum wages and overall median income has increased. I don’t get how people still don’t understand this. As people wages increases so do the prices of things so it’s always around the same

423 miles per day per a 5 day week. That's about 6 hours driving per day. If that's all you do for your job then that's the same as a 9 to 5 if you include one hour lunch break. So it's very doable. I don't know how healthy it is though, sitting in a vehicle for 6 hours everyday for 9 years.

I think the actual story has more maintenance than that. The transmission did have an issue with reverse gear if I recall reading the story and he had it rebuilt and then I think something else had failed….. I believe the story also mentioned that Toyota was actually mostly interested in how the body and frame held up because it was used for a lot of towing and transporting goods for oil field work

How long did you work there?? The reason I ask is the 2nd gen. Tundra had a horrible launch.... "Speaking with Automotive News at the Tokyo Motor Show, ToMoCo's global manufacturing exec admitted that problems with the automaker's full-size pickup have caused "shame" within the company. Takeshi Uchiyamada cited the rapid expansion of Toyota's production facilities, increased sales and issues with new products as being the major dilemmas facing the automaker, but that all these problems are being addressed." Many people paid over $3,000 for the AIP before toy admitted the problem. The 5.7's leak @ the cam towers to this day... There were many other problems. Luckily, my tundra only had a few of the known issues.

I was so blessed that I bought an 09 tundra used in 2019 for 16k with 53k miles on it. My wife and I were down to one vehicle. I needed a truck for a new job that was paying me a truck allowance. We had $1200 in our bank account and I needed $1000 down to finance it. The job allowed us to save 20k the first year and we payed the truck off in 2021. I'm now switching jobs that comes with a company truck so I can keep my tundra. It now has 208k miles and no issues. Regular maintenance.

That's hilarious!! When the 2nd gen. Tundra came out in '07, the 1st gen owners said the EXACT SAME THING!! In the meantime, I bought one and experienced a few of the problems that caused a toyota executive to admit they were ashamed of the quality of the new truck....I liked mine because of the class leading 1/2 ton specs.....but it wasn't without its faults..

@@alansach8437 wow spoken like a true mindless spending consumer cow. Toyota was the FIRST manufacturer EVER to be #1 in sales a few years ago...de-throning Detroit's big 3 for the first time in U. S. history. Keep in mind that toyota does NOT do fleet sales to government/state agencies which the big 3 do! Even without those sales, toyota STILL became #1. Do you think that happened because toyota makes crappy unreliable dumpsters on wheels like the usa companies? No! It's BECAUSE they make the most dependable cars in the world... and they still became #1 in the US. Well it seems that nobody makes a good work truck anymore. The fleet diesel f350 trucks are so low that one trip to the job site rips all the plastic garbage from underneath. The Chevrolets go trough transmissions like nobody’s business and everyone especially dodges have 65 inch tvs glued to the dashes even in base model fleet trucks. This is coming from a fleet mechanic. At least the Toyotas are mechanically sound. The bodies are just made of thin metal.
