“Stop comparing yourself to other people,” is some of the best advice a small content creator can hear. “Comparison is the thief of joy” I think is the old saying? Great stuff as always. I love SMART goals. The one I’m working on is to stick to my stream schedule 100% without fail, for the month of April. Thanks again for all the great advice you’re putting out there.

Another advice to avoid burnout is: celebrate the small victories! This is very important when you’re doing something as hard as creating an audience for your content. Did you have a new chatter on your stream? Did you manage to remember a personal fact about a chatter? Did you get 10 bits for the first time? Celebrate that! You’ll feel a lot better and more motivated to stream. For instance last weekend I got a 1€ donation. It was the very first time I got a donation. When the stream ended I danced a little victory dance and talked about it with my girlfriend. It made me feel as if I was a top streamer earning thousands of € per stream.

I know you tell me every time I comment that it's not YOU but it's the work I put in, but really your advice continues helping me grow and I am super thankful for you. You're 100% right about the burn out, it happens, it got me and it severely ruined my streams for a while. I wasn't keeping up with my schedule, my overall energy wasn't great on stream, so I took a 4 month hiatus to take care of myself, and when I was ready to come back I re-watched your videos, took notes, and things are going better than ever. THANK YOU!!! I've been recently suffering from massive burnout and honestly considered throwing in the towel. I think the most inspirational thing anyone can ever say is to keep going! Sometimes people just need constant reassurance. To know that their journey isn't someone else's; their successes aren't your failures and vice-versa. Someone told me that when people give you a compliment-it's often just that. No one is putting you on a pedestal that you must suddenly adhere to. I'll be coming back to this video anytime I feel like giving up because I know the internet would be worse off if I did.
@TomasTDE

The comparing yourself to others is a big one for me that I struggle with. I've been at it for 5 months and I'm doing well for myself IMO. I'm averaging about 15 viewers per stream and I just hit 250 followers yesterday. But there are times when I find myself veering into those comparison with my friends and getting down which isn't good. Everyone's journey is unique to them. But more than that, worrying too much about the numbers is a one way track to feeling down, especially early on. do this because you enjoy doing it, because you think you have something unique to present to people. For me, streaming is the first thing I've felt passionate about in almost a decade, working on stuff, adding new things, and trying to create the best content I can is the reason I do anything else that gets me there. these videos of yours have been such a huge help in my journey thus far as a creator as well, so thank you, Eljay. Honestly, so much of what I've done to improve and the steps I've taken have been inspired by these.

Fairly spot on already with your own thoughts BUT the other issue is that KZbin is more discoverable IF you make discoverable video content. My latest video talks KZbin gaming for discoverability and my other KZbin growth video breaks down it as well with some more about optimising for the YT algo. YT does lack community compared to Twitch, less features for community focused streaming BUT they are trying to add it so it does stagnate in the middle, but that middle is fixed with consistent discoverable video content as well (Twitch is the same, I stagnated a bit before this Yt channel did well) It is a toss up but the core shouldn't be "this or that" it should be "What Discoverable And Engaging Content Can I Make to grow anywhere?" Hope this helps! :)

I'll be honest I get the feeling that I already achieved that SMART goal by getting out of my comfort zone and just talking while I streamed. However I can point out that the only way for me to become better than my last stream is to research bitrate and what the difference is between an encoder and decoder which will in fact take a day, as for my other goal would be to get employed so that way I can make at least 250 per week since I don't really have to worry about rent so this planning becomes so easy. There is another goal that I always wanted to achieve and that was to upgrade my SSD for higher storage and that's taking another day that I have to research. TLDR ;Reached my first goal of being more confident, Day one learn what GPUs are, Day two start hustling, Day three upgrade the storage or delete some ahem things off of it.

My new streaming goals are these three things; 1. Finding something to engage visually for my viewers without being affiliate (or having their extra perks) 2. Making sure my audio for all devices are balanced between mic, game, and music playing 3. I want to update the sound effects of my alerts with something I personally love 4. Create 1-5 KZbin videos a month to practice content making with my streams Thank you so much for this easy to learn video you provided!

Just the video I need to be watching. Been stagnant on stream growth and looking to get that up in a healthy way. Thanks for all the videos! The SMART goal with the mic is one I've struggled with and the goal example you gave is one I'm gonna use. Aside from two days I'm giving myself two weeks because there's a mic set up I want and funding for it is already planned out 🥰

My goals this month KZbin - put out 2 videos a week -branch out into one other game Twitch - 100% little nightmares 1/2 - make actual talking points, instead of talking from the hip Side note, I want to say thank you to Elijah (sorry if I spelled that wrong) I just got affiliate this past weekend after 3 months of streaming and doing KZbin, I’ve been lucky to have some help along the way but watching your videos really helped me get a grip on what I need to do to improve as a creator all around. So thank you again!

I started streaming not too long ago, but it is, and probably always will be just a hobby for me. I love these videos as they give me some insight into those who want or are doing it as a job. I also use this to get better at setting up a space and the technology as well as get better talking on camera. The last few years has changed a lot and my work has changed to require me to do a lot more "zoom" calls and a lot less in person calls. It's getting to the point where I have to update all of the training videos I made a couple of years ago, and streaming will help greatly improve the quality of them. As always, great content. Thanks. Edit: I use SMART goals all the time. It's great to know how to set these up for life in general

Honestly, this video couldn't have come at a better time. I've seen a stagnation and small decline in my stream (in both my content and analytics) and I've just been feeling burnt out from my other job. This is definitely the kick up the ass that I've needed to feel better about what I'm trying to achieve 😄 Thanks for another inspiring and informative video, Eljay!

If you haven't talked about this already, I'd love to see a video where you talk about setting up subscriber rewards. I have a bunch of subs from a hype train lol, but other than emotes I made, I have no incentives set up for them to renew, or for anyone else to sub in general. I'd love your take on what's worth it setting up, and just what options there are in general. Thanks for all you do!

I have two main goals. 1) equipment update. (New laptop so I can play better games and new mic for better audio quality) and I want to try and do both of these by the end of the year. 2) stick to a schedule. Now that summer is over maybe add one or two art streams a week.

I was very focussed on growth the first few months, like i streamed every day for a long time 8+ hours. (sometimes a day off) And that was when i started (August) until when i ended up getting a burn out (December) It took me 3 months to get back, but since April i have been getting the motivation again and since this week i am back with a schedule! So guys, please do not over stream, set big goals, my burn out took 5 months to recover. Have fun everyone, and let's get those viewers! ^^

I absolutely NEEDED a video like this. I have always had a terrible habit of picking things up or finding new passion projects, setting high-lofting goals and then just giving up so soon after. I have gone and reassessed some of my stream goals and changing my view to what I can control in the immediate future. My goals for the next month are: -update all my social media bio's -Add more panels to my twitch about page -do 3 fully structured streams a week -upload my first KZbin video -post 3 times a week on Twitter and TikTok Thanks eljay!!

I haven't started streaming yet but here are some of my goals so far in no particular order. 1. Start streaming 2. "Design" a logo (I already have a logo sketched) 3. "Discover" my brand 4. Configure my lighting to look the best 5. Familiarize myself with some of the streaming software e.g. OBS and stream elements 6. Have fun!

You got this! Sadly streaming is SO volatile! Some people don't have a community that is established enough to stick around even after short breaks, big breaks will always see massive drops like this. It's why I tend to suggest people put 2 - 3 days of their schedule back to back without a stream so they get that time off every week to recharge! Hope you're feeling better soon, and back on top!

I have a lot of goals when it comes to streaming but a few will be to get more in depth with the filters and overlay animations I can add to my stream to get my crew even more involved with stream. My big goal which is coming along SUPER well, is to have a place where anyone can come in and feel instantly like one of us and be comfortable with playing games as if we have been friends for a long long time. Keep up the great work!

Really loved this video. I've been working on setting goals like this. Started streaming 3 months ago and it's been slow. Not to say it's been bad. I've been enjoying the slow roll. Finding my way and understanding how to do things correctly. My current goal to hit by end of May is new content format. Instead of just playing games, I'm working on how to expand the types of content I put out. Reaction nights, viewer art and music, maybe watch parties for new content from other creators. But I'm loving where it's taking me and I'm enjoying the ride. Thanks for this video!

My current short-term goals are a) To make my Twitch channel look good before I start streaming (make graphics, set up possible alerts etc.) and b) Plan out everything for my first stream. I'm planning to start streaming in July after I'm done with my Bachelor's degree, because it just sounds like something I'd enjoy. :D I've already planned out the type of content I want to make, I'm almost done with graphics and a possible schedule, so now I'm just waiting for when I actually have time to make that plan reality :) Thanks for making these videos and putting all the hard work into them, they always inspire me a little more :)

YES! I use SMART goals at work! So knew as soon as you said it... and it's all about accountability, which you need for yourself... streaming is like your own business... typically the more you put in, the more you get out, but more effective with effecting planning. As they say, fail to prepare, prepare to fail.

I didn’t think of this as a goal but I’ve been focusing a lot on improving my engagement with chatters and the quality of my content. The engagement with chatters is measurable because I do get more people chatting for longer. Improving the quality of the content isn’t measurable per say but I am reading a book on how to write comedy. That by itself is measurable but the book has action points that are measurable too. For instance, I’ve started a writing challenge of writing for 30min every day for at least 2 weeks.

It's funny I found this video, I just started streaming two days ago, my first stream had a crappy video so I made a goal to fix it, which I was able to do with a few changes. I just watched a video went home and fixed it but then noticed my mic sucked so I just watched your video for the second time and now I'll go home and tweak it which will make tonight's stream better. My current goal is just to set a schedule for the next few weeks and enjoy the process of streaming on Twitch. I have work on laying out weekly goals and have not linked them to getting followers of subs but more just taking the time to make my streams better quality and the rest should follow.

It amazes me how similar streaming is to "real jobs". As someone who started climbing the corporate ladder almost a decade ago, I 6 can confirm that Smart is something I praise and push to my "disciples". (I didn't pick the term). Both you and los gaming give identical advice to what I give people that show a desire to move up in a corporate structure.

Great information here! I've been using various SMART goals for months to work towards my overall streaming vision myself and even set goals for every stream that I show my viewers to make accomplishing them part of the stream. My long term dream is to have a horror roleplay storyline type "show" happening on my stream, would like to one day be running it almost like Tales from the Crypt, and also do a horror themed nighttime talk show where I talk to other horror content creators. But that's the tip of the "one day" mountain for me, my current goals are just to set up two new channel point redemptions that utilize automatic features letting chat influence my stream, and to by the end of the month finish creating and setting up some background graphics for my camera/green screen setup. I just accomplished over the last few weeks goals of swapping from SLOB's to OBS and getting a ton of plug ins installed and setup in basic forms! I agree doing these small steps to improve your content and stream, and not focus as much on "making my number go up" which you can't directly influence, is a great way to keep feeling motivated!

My goals are all going to be hype 😂 when I start streaming is currently out of my hands - my internet is flakier than a well cooked salmon until roadworks are finished some time in the next month and we can switch to the new ISP laying cable. My initial goals are: Improve mic set up between my first and second stream based on feedback. Once I have a start date for streaming I will spend a week in advance getting into the routine of engaging on Twitter (4/day) and Facebook (2/day) to start polls, community building and generating hype through my friends following me on those platforms. I currently play on other peoples' streams 3x a week and know when I've been consistent about hyping that from my personal accounts I get a core of people who will share and watch so my goal is purely to be consistent in advertising my own efforts.
