Atilla is easily the most thematic of the total war games, with its apocalyptic nature being extremely well done. Everything from the layout of the settlements, to the music, to the amazing cutscenes makes you really feel like the end is here. Great days have come and gone. The storm approaches. That makes surviving it and triumphing, especially if you don’t cheese, feel like you’ve done the impossible. Sad CA has abandoned it. There are some extremely aggravating things I wish they’d fix but atilla surprised me. It felt... thematic, and no total war game really impressed me in that regard.

Attila to me has always felt like a 1,000 piece puzzle set, that initially every piece has a place, but as you go further along, those pieces form chunks, and then those chunks don't fit with one another. Eventually you end up with 10 or so huge chunks, but you can't go beyond that. The game isn't missing features or content, its just that none of the features it contains flows together to make a cohesive game.

@@rockstar450 my argument would be for Rome. From its inception to fall in the 5th century even tho the East continued on for another almost 1000 years was the greatest empire of all time. Rome had way better characters and intrigue as well imo and there legacy is definitely still felt even to this day even tho a lot of their stuff was copied from the Greeks as far as architecture and government ahha. I feel it’s definitely something to be argued. The British empire is without a doubt one of the greatest of all time and the stuff they were able to do is unparalleled. The last great empire probably for the remainder of human history. Not trying to diminish the British empire but in my opinion Rome is greater for the lasting effects and also just the political intrigue and characters makes it better to me haha.

UPDATE 5/27: Folks, they did it again. They just pulled the plug on Three Kingdoms in order to make a new Three Kingdoms game that *won't have any connection to the base game.* Thank you for the positive feedback, everyone. Unfortunately, some people seem to think that I don't like Attila or that I don't think it's a good game. Nowhere in the video do I say these things, in fact, I praise it for its atmosphere and superior mechanics. I like Attila, I have 400 hours & own all the DLC. The game "failed" to garner a large player base (meaning it likely underperformed sales-wise) just like Napoleon did. The numbers are what they are. That wouldn't have happened if it was an expansion to Rome 2 which fixed Rome 2's core issues. If that happened, the wonderful modding communities wouldn't be split between two games (like modder Benjin said in another comment), and we'd have one epic-sized Roman history Total War game that doesn't run like shit. That's the point of this video.

Honestly, I have tried 7 or 8 times to get into it, but I just can't get past the first 20 turns. I even bought a couple of DLC, to see if it would help, but I just find it totally uninspiring. It seems to me you have to win battles heavily against the odds, and that requires a lot of very intense micro-management which is an acquired taste. The minimum skill/proficiency level required is very high. I can watch a playthrough, use exactly the same strategy, and not come close to winning because I simply can't micro-manage the battles well enough to win, even playing on far below the difficulty levels I am watching. I realize this invites the, get gud, response, but for me, when there are similar alternatives such as Warhammer 2 where getting gud is not required, it really isn't neccesary.
@pergys69913 жыл бұрын
@@TheToledoTrumpton mandatory “git gud” comment. But seriously, that’s the appeal of Attila for a lot of players. It’s one of the few TW and only historical title that actively challenges the player consistently. Even when cheesing battles, you have to be very lucky, have the right map and units, and the right timing to win. Once you get the hang of battles, it’s still only the beginning. You have to understand the right builds needed for armies, best settlement build and even the right towns to be used as choke points. It’s super refreshing and keeps you wanting to play more even in late game which is something most TW games struggle to do. For example, In one of my ERE games, I managed to stabilize my empire in around 30 turns and keep it like that for 10 turns. Then I got too arrogant and declared wars on a whole bunch of nations. Then in less than 10 turns, my emperor died, I lost 8 out of the 12 armies I had, the Levant and Egypt got taken, the Huns and Macromani burned Greece down except for Constantinople and I was so broke from trying to maintain my armies and rebuild my economy. You don’t ever get a challenge like this in TW games anymore and winning and bringing my empire back from the brink is what was so satisfying and amazing about the campaign
@pergys69913 жыл бұрын
Attila has honestly ruined Rome 2 for me. I tried going back to the campaign but everything felt so easy and weak. There was no challenge at all. I remember the first time I played Attila. I picked the Sasanids to play it safe, just to familiarise myself with the game. At the beginning of the game I saw my vasals fighting of some weird Eastern-looking faction around the Caspian Sea, some cities got burned, I thought it's just a gimmick. A bit later in the game I sent a spy to Italy. Left him close to Rome, forgot about him. And then I remembered I left the poor guy there and went to check on him... I saw the entire peninsula under siege, burning, dying, entire provinces scorched.... The air was indeed filled with smoke and blood. I was rully shocked, I can still see it, one of thse moments that will always stay with me. Attila is an entirely different experience and IMHO the best modern TW game. And for your comment about 'why it failed' - I never thought it failed, actually it's the first time I thought it might have not been a success, I am genuinely surprised. People do play it and there is a big fan base of Atilla. Sales numbers is not everything if the game is so good and not plagued with bugs or stupid mechanics. It's not a meme like ToB, people don't talk about Attila to describe a failed game. As you mentioned it's a similar case to Napoleon, although I'd argue that Napoleon with its much smaller scope does feel like a DLC, while Attila does not. It's a dark TW game, feels much more like a TW Medieval Prologue, rather than TW Rome Epilogue. It will always be loved and remembered therefore I'd never say it 'failed', Attila's case is too nuanced to call it a failure anyways great video, gib MOAR Total War content and keep it up dude

I think Atilla is fine as its own game: It's a different age of history (dark ages vs. Iron/classical age), with different tech, cultures, forms of gov't religions and world powers. And that's why it could support its own DLCs extending the period well past Rome's fall. The problem was CA's post-release policy: using Atilla as an excuse to abandon Rome II and then Rome II as an excuse to abandon Atilla. That doesn't mean the games couldn't have both been developed to work well.
@happycompy3 жыл бұрын
You know what, this is the most unique take I've heard so far. I guess it never occurred to me that CA could theoretically walk and chew bubble gum at the same time, because they've never once shown us that they can. They are not good at balancing support for two titles at once, as we can see with the disparity between 3K & WH2 support. They go where the money is, which makes sense, but that's why Attila was doomed to fail from the get-go. Thanks for the comment btw :)

Thank you for explaining in this short video what I've been trying to explain individually to various people for *_years_* now. Attila, IMO, should never have been its own game entirely - it should have been a standalone expansion to Rome 2, like how Fall of the Samurai was to Shogun 2. Doing that would have helped add more depth to the original game it was based off of (why wait for the Rise of the Republic update for the family tree in 2018 when it could have been added as early as 2015?) and it would have also kept the community more united. Right now, as a modder myself that focuses on this era of TW (yes, I am the same Benjin who worked on AAA: Generals and various 3D art-related mod content for Rome 2), I know that it's rather disheartening for modders in both communities atm. Basically, people who mod Rome 2 want to have the same tools as modders in Attila have (e.g. battlefield / siege map editing, more scripting possibilities, more core mechanics / depth etc), while people who mod Attila want the game they're modding for to be more popular (i.e. have the same number of players as Rome 2 has) and also have a more optimised experience for the core game (in comparison, Thrones of Britannia - which is mostly based on Attila and I believe was originally slated to be a campaign pack DLC before being made into a standalone "Saga" title - is far more optimised. There was a time when lots of Attila modders / overhaul projects were seriously considering moving over to ToB, but realised after a month or two that the player numbers were even worse + there were some core features cut out that could not be re-implemented (e.g. agents, hordes, navies, ambush battles etc) which made it a less attractive idea to initiate a move to that game). This could have all been resolved if both games were united in the first place and it's still such a shame that it happened - you'd have thought that CA would remember what happened with Napoleon and not repeat the same mistake? I'm not gonna be too harsh though. Perhaps there was a technical reason at the time as to why they didn't which we're not fully aware of (e.g. memory limit / file sizes)? Whatever the reason was, how about now, what with many technical improvements since then (e.g. the move from 32-bit to 64-bit)? Warhammer 2 (and soon Warhammer 3) proves that such scale / diversity can be achieved and still be technically viable. I would love it if CA remastered both games into one big package some day along with many extra improvements to bring them both up to more of a modern standard and unite the community for this era of TW again, but I doubt they'll ever do that.

Besides the forever end turns, one of the things about Attila that really bothered me was the feeling that the game was punishing you in bursts, rather than a gradual ramping up. Things got really difficult, really fast, and it felt like if you could survive that big burst you just played the waiting game for Attila to die (because you can't really fight an enemy that gets free full stack replacement armies the turn after you defeat them). Another thing that really could have been done better is the problem of an empty map. After the first 50 turns or so it is a few powers left hiding from the huns, most of the map a series of ruins. I feel like both of these problems could have been solved by changing AI behavior in each chapter. At first it could be be some slow barbarian border incursions, then ramping up to more desperate barbarians trying to seek shelter from the hunnic storm, then Attila raiding and sacking (but not destroying the cities that were his source of tribute income), concluding with the barbarians who were still around being willing to make alliances to defeat the huns, then a final chapter after Atilla's death to try to scratch an existence from the ruins.

It's challenging in so many aspects and the mod Ancient Empires is just really beautiful as it combines Rome II into Attila. Woe to us, that we live in the wrong timeline.
@rafox662 жыл бұрын
There is a fix for the performance of Attila by taking some files from thrones of Britannia and merging them into Attila, this works because ToB is pretty much an Attila DLC. I can actually play this game now on the same hardware I had when I bought the game 6 years ago, couldn't run it then but it runs pretty good now.

just one minor thing about FoTS. The introduction of FoTS actually changed shogun 2 naval battle where ships become much more durable against cannon fire and it became extremely rare for ships to sink (99% of time ship's morale will break due to crew loss). Considering how many underlying mechanics of attila are different from rome 2 I am not too sure whether integration would have been practical or better. Last Roman is a peek of historical TW. That said, if they made Atilla and R2 one game, they could patch and polish them together, and we would have probably wound up with superior product.

Yet the amazing part of the Attila total war is that even when the Huns are dealt with the game is not over yet as the Sassanids in the late game almost dominates all the territories in Asia and challenges whatever territory I left in Africa. That campaign was so great and tense that I didn’t mange to finish it up till today.

First of all - I have grown to love them all, regardless of their undeniable flaws. They have solid base mechanics and relatively few remaining minor technical issues ( apart fro ,the major ones. And yet, while neither of their basegames is bad, I feel like they could be so much more if the devs had focused their efforts on cleaning up one game and then added the same kind of content instead of three separate titles that really could be part of the same thing. Stuff like problems with the AI or the major improvements in parts of the gameplay mechanics could carry over so much better but CA seems to have forgotten a lot about Shogun2 + expansion and why that game works so well to this day.

They had the Peloponnesian War, the Roman Kingdom, fledgling of the Roman Republic, the survival of the Republic and the changing of power from Carthage to Rome, Caesar's Rise in Power, the 2nd Civil War, Empire Divided, and Attila. If you add in Charlemagne, lower Middle Ages, you have quite literally every major part (besides the 1st Civil War) of the Ancient World, including the first major part of the Middle Ages. I am surprised they never did an "Triumph of Alexander" DLC where it happens just before the Grand Campaign of Rome 2. As a relatively new Total War fan that started with Total War: Warhammer 2, besides the epic fantasy setting, I think what made Warhammer such a massive success was how in-depth they went with the game. I think any historical settings could compete with Warhammer if they are as detailed as they are in Warhammer so far. Commit to a title until it’s finished instead of canning it after a few years and pump out a lot of detailed and fun dlcs. If they want to explore an entire area make compatible sequels or however many it takes to fill out the timeline. Example: Rise of Rome as the first game. Fill out that game for years until there is an insane amount of content, then make a compatible follow up game for the next historically significant period about Rome, ending the series with Fall of Rome. Less standalone titles, more dlcs and integratabtle games. As a Paradox fan, I know how much people complain about too many dlc, but WE BUY THEM ANYWAYS. CA should go all out with their titles.

Now that I think about it, trying to build a campaign spanning the better part of a millennium is likely one big reason why they may have divided the games in the first place for better or worse. I think CA generally gets really in-depth on their historical titles. I mean, from Empire to Napoleon is about 100 years give or take. Rome II (counting DLC) to Attila is about 1200 years. A lot of things happened at that time. From an economical perspective, CA wanted to release a game with high anticipation and with short-term economical gains whilst making the (I think) better gameplay of Attila. I'm a huge fan of the Attila time period, and so I could not be any happier with it (although I do like my mods for it). That being said, it would not have been impossible to merge the two games. It's just, we would have been waiting for 4+ years for this goliath game to come out, and only for it to have tons of bugs and problems. In the long term, it would have been better for them to do the merge and for us to wait years longer. It's saddening to see, as you pointed out, one or the other, but not both. Personally, I like Attila more, but I love Rome too. I believe the biggest reason that Attila is not liked is because of the lack of interest in the time. Had they both been merged, this problem would have been erased, and players may have come to admire the Attila time period instead of shutting it out before even trying it.
