Spot on. It doesn't matter that you can play a million notes a minute if none of them are on the beat. A bassist playing simple root notes with excellent timing is a better bassist than someone shredding through arpeggios and scales with no timing. I know I've played well when the drum and bass sound like one instrument

This video answered all my beginner questions! Im a long time guitar player and really digging into the bass lately trying to learn properly. In this video you mention that on the high string you are not bouncing off of the string but rather playing THROUGH it. I was wondering why i couldnt do the thumb up technique at all and this helped me solve that issue!

just found these lessons and fantastic .. 30 years and still learning.. 2 things though on this one - Check out the Larry graham stuff - He was a 2 finger pull of man, does give a slightly tighter "Snap" on the higher pulls also.. Flea's style is special as he "rocks" his hand to use both thumb and pinky to slap and middle finger to pull "Higher Ground" is a prime example - but as stated his low guitar position makes this to work..

Great job on the #1 slap bass mistake. As for gear, in the category of "Awesome Class," I suggest the very amp I've grown to love (it sounds so rich and has been my go-to for two years now): Gallien-Krueger MB (alleged) 500W; I own the 2x10" w/horn. Why don't you mention Mark King here when it's talk about regulare slapping and not double thumb. Mark King uses a angle that is perfect for this kind of practise and he has techniques that is way cooler then Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten visa versa, you must never forget Mark Kings role in history as one of the greatest slapper of em all.
@jameswhite79976 жыл бұрын
I agree. I get the impression Mark King is just not cool in some circles for reasons that I don't fully get. I'm not saying this is the case on this video as I have no idea but I think some modern professional players think he's too cliched or predictable to mention. My goodness though 'A physical Presence' live album from 1985 has some of the finest slap ever on it!

Scott I don't know if you ever knew this but I once read on an old forum years ago on the Stuart Zender website (I think), that Zender would actually use his whole arm to for his slap technique which he attributes to his more "thud" kind of sound. He mightn't be one of the more renowned bassists but his slap bass sound on the Warwicks was always my personal favourite, that said his playing was slower paced than most slap bass styles so maybe that's why it worked.
