I zoom into this sunny street scene to decide on what I thought could be a simpler composition, but turned out quite difficult!. So things I had to think about:
Rendering the strong contrast between the bright, sun-lit areas and deep shadows cast by the buildings required careful preservation of white paper for highlights and layered washes for the shadows.
Conveying the atmospheric perspective down the narrow street also demanded delicate handling, with the buildings becoming slightly lighter and less detailed as they receded.
The mix of warm and cool tones proved tricky - the warm reds and beige of the buildings had to be balanced against the cool blue of the sky, requiring a bit of temperature control in my paint mixing.
The architectural details and ornate building features necessitated precise drawing first, getting the angles right. Suggesting the cars rather than rendering them in full detail was key to avoiding making them the focal point and maintaining the overall Mediterranean character.
My pink lady did not come out well!
The biggest challenge, however, was maintaining the sunny, Mediterranean atmosphere of the scene while navigating these technical elements. But the final result, I believe, captures the lively spirit of this charming Ibiza street. And remember to get a figure in!
