Dylan Barnes and Nobles is doing this “go on a blind date with a book” for Valentine’s Day. they wrap up novels in paper and you only know the genre of the book. This is would make a nice video for Valentine’s Day

I usually buy the Kindle book and the audio book. I read and listen simultaneously. This is highly immersive. I often speed the audio up to about 1.5 times the normal rate. This helps me to get through the book much faster. I highlight and take notes. I use my iPad mini for all of this. It has become my reading device of choice. You can’t beat it. If I particularly like the book, I also purchase a physical copy for the shelf. Just to have. I really don’t have a favorite narrator. Although there is this guy who reads techno thrillers like the Vince Flynn Mitch Rap series and I really like his voice.

I introduced audiobooks in my life this year! I have listened to a part of one before but I couldn’t enjoy it then because I would start thinking about other things and lose track of where I was. It was pain in the butt to find the spot I got lost. But then I realized that if it’s a re-read, it might work as I would have a general ideas of the events happen in the book. And it worked!! I’m on the 4th audiobook right now, actually enjoying “re-reading” my last year’s favorites. So maybe I should give another chance to Dune. I struggled with it so much last year that it took me more than six months to finish it because I had to make myself read a chapter a day from a half way in. Maybe if it’s read to me, it could be a different experience. 😊

I completely understand what you mean! I’m usually the same way. I typically only listen to books if I’m doing menial tasks like chores or cooking, but even then, I find myself getting distracted from time to time. I’m glad you’ve found a system that works for you! 😁

I don't normally listen to audiobooks and prefer to read the books. However I do pick out audiobooks for my mother and hear some of them on the speaker when it's playing. I love any Fanny Flagg story, A Redbird Christmas is one that she narrates. She is also an actress, so she does a great job I think with the emotions and different characters in her books. Big Stone Gap is another good audiobook by Adriana Trigiani and she also narrates. I love books that are funny and about small towns in the south. Both authors are from the south, so their accents add something to the narrations. I think I will check out the Huckleberry Finn for my mother next. Elijah Wood actually starred as Huck Finn in the 1993 film, so I can imagine he did a good job in the narration.

I really enjoyed Sleeping Giants by Sylvain Neuvel. The book has an interview format and several narrators and it's very immersive. If you're enjoying Neverwhere, i highly recommend American Gods read by an entire ensemble including Ian McShane. Others i really enjoyed were World War Z, JK Rowling's entire Cormoran Strike series read by Richard Glennister and a true crime book that i really liked the story and narration was People Who Eat Darkness by Richard Lloyd Parry and read by Simon Vance. I also recommend Ken Follett's century trilogy starting with Fall of Giants and Boy's Life by Robert McCammon, one of my all time favorite novels.

Oh my goodness, I couldn't possibly pick _just one_ favorite audiobook! 😂 I love: Dan Stevens' reading of Frankenstein, Thandie Newton's reading of Jane Eyre, Tim Curry's reading of A Christmas Carol, Wil Wheaton's reading of The Martian and pretty much any Jane Austen that Juliet Stevenson narrates. Also love Hugh Fraser's or David Suchet's readings of Agatha Christie. 🤓

I'm really glad that I found your post! Where did you get your Book Worm tee shirt? I'd like to get one for myself. My Book Club and I will be discussing PROJECT HAIL MARY in December and I will definitely listen to it rather than read it based on your comments. I am currently listening to REMARKABLY BRIGHT CREATURES by Shelby Van Pelt and narrated by Marin Ireland and Michael Urie and I'm really enjoying it. I also loved Tom Hanks' narration of THE DUTCH HOUSE by Ann Patchett, even though the book was a "downer" and Meryl Streep's narration of TOM LAKE, also by Ann Patchett, which honestly was boring, but Streep's narration made it tolerable for me. I'll be back to see what other audiobooks you have to recommend. Take care!

Can’t say I have favourites in audiobooks. I should start paying attention to narrators’ names. I did enjoy listening to Sir David Attenborough narrate his latest book. And an audiobook that had me so gripped that I walked an extra 5-km so I could hear how something turned out was the non-fiction The Ice At The End Of The World by Jon Gertner. That was a fantastically interesting book and I have both audio and ebook, and if I see it on sale I’d probably get a hard copy too.

My all time favourite audiobook series is written by Michael Anderle and the narrator is Emily Berisford. (Appologies for misspelling of the name!) There is the traditional audiobook format and a 'dramatized' version by Graphic Audio. I'm absolutely hooked on both the original audiobooks and the dramatized version. Emily portrays the lead character, Bethony-Anne in the most spectacular mannor and she was chosen to continue the voice during the dramatized version due to the way she brings the energy, personality and fury of the main character. I must warn you however, this series contains masses of expletive laden exchanges and 'creative cussing'! This is a fantasy scifi series that has its own univers of interconnected and standalone books and stories criscrossing the main storyline. I highly recommend this. Please let me know your thoughts. If anyone's heard these, wow, what a ride we're beeing taken on lol. 10/10 recommendation!

I personally love Michael Kramer, who does a lot of Brandon Sanderson books. There's something about his voice that I love. I love John Saul and he wrote a book called Perfect Nightmare. It was narriated in part by Dick Hill. He did all the male voices and Susie Breck did the female voices. Hill did the prologue, which was in the POV of the villain and he was so creepy and hit the nail on the head so hard that I was so creeped out. I almost decided to read the book physically rather than have this dude in my ear. But I didn't. He did so good, I totally believed his narration.

Glad I came across this video as I've been looking for ideas. I read Dune years ago but I might give the audiobook a go. Thank you for the video. Do you find that audiobooks are more memorable to “read” rather than an actual book? Recently, I have listened to Finding Me - Viola Davis. This is a memoir that is read by the author, who happens to be an actress. This powerful book had me riveted to my seat from the outset. I have also read The Guncle - Steven Rowley. This is quite a funny book with some serious overtones. A brother, who is entering rehab asks his gay brother to look after his young children. A lovely, sweet book that is read by the author. Finally, I read Lessons in Chemistry - Bonnie Garmus and narrated by Miranda Raison.

They certainly can be! I find that if a narrators performance is especially strong, it really elevates an otherwise mediocre story. Those sound like good reads!

He made the characters sound really whiny and the way he narrated certain dialogues didn’t really seem to fit the scenes.
