Pretty good list, but to be fair, if you ask 1000 people, you will get 1000 different answers which makes this a list an individual's favorites and not an actual top ten list which doesn't exist, unless you're using record sales as a basis. Jethro Tull ...etc In terms of absolute popularity, the only thing I know is that Pink Floyd was/IS the most popular choice among die-hard prog rock fans and it's a fact that they were the most successful band among all these.

Yes because Close The Edge is an incredible concept album that transcends the genre. 5. Jethro Tull because their quirky approach.

Being a huge YES fan, I would have put them as number 1 until a couple of weeks ago. I had missed out on King Crimson completely. I’ve only heard the first album. I haven’t been able to move past it because I’m addicted. I’m obsessed with Greg Lake’s vocals. If King Crimson is as good as I am thinking at the moment, they will be my number one, primarily because of Lake’s vocals. This coming from a person who played an abridged version of Close to the Edge in a candlelit church as the prelude music for my wedding. 😊The last verse played before the wedding march was Coming quickly to terms of all expression laid As a moment regained and regarded both the same Emotion revealed as the ocean maid A clearer future, morning, evening, nights with you… We had many, many people of all ages tell us that they would have never listened to that music at any other time. They thanked us! YES gained a few fans that evening. I am grateful that I lived when rock was king, that I experienced the Beatles, Bob Dylan, progressive rock and so many more. I am disappointed in myself for having been foolish to dismiss bands without giving them the courtesy of listening. I regret that I worked too much and listened less. If I had known what was in store after the 70’s that would not be the case. If you haven’t experienced the bands on this list, regardless of your age, you should listen to them. I would recommend that you add Emerson Lake and Palmer to the list. They were showmen/showoffs but it shouldn’t discount the music. Happy listening!

In your opinion, which 10 bands should be on this list? We will make a reissue based on our subscribers and you can contribute.
@Vince-lq3ve8 ай бұрын
@@BackingTrackCenter I may be able to make a case that Pink Floyd should be categorized differently, however I could be easily swayed either way. Great band no matter what. If you google top Psychedelic bands you will find Pink Floyd at the top every time. Are they Psychedelic or Prog? Growing up in the late 70's, Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, Jethro Tull, and the little known band, Audience were in my fav rotation. If I were to rank them for me personally without kicking out Floyd for the Prog or not, then Genesis is way out front as I became a life long addict of their music. Then Audience because i return to that album a lot, even now (House on the Hill) and also Lunch became a fav in a smaller way later. Jethro Tull is third for me because I still play their songs a lot and can play them for a general audience as they are always positive and fun. Then Pink Floyd, though I never listen to them anymore -I hate to say it but i think they serve the teenage to early 20 audience better with their anti-establishment dark tunes. YES would be 4th, though I rarely play them. They are a wow instrumental talented band but they don't give me the escapism I get from sitting through a Genesis song. Sometimes they do a little too much noodling away where I get kinda bored, I need a bit of "story" to the music. Back to Pink Floyd...not prog? Which Prog band is trippy? None that I can think of -except Pink Floyd are trippy. On side two of the Lamb, Genesis tried trippy once -i skip that price every time -it just doesn't fit for me and Pink Floyd does that trippy stuff so much better. I have rambled enough. Open to others opinion on this though.

Genesis might be up there. Mind you, if you included solo efforts, then Genesis would likely blow all bands out of the water. Steve Hackett alone has 21 solo albums. Never mind band offshoots: Mike and the Mechanics, GTR, Brand X, and then guest spots for Phil with Robert Plant, Tears for Fears, Clapton, Eno.

@@BackingTrackCenter Hello! I am almost 63 years old and I have been listening to Genesis since 72, that is, 10 years literally speaking. I can assure you that this band changed my life. If you ask me what was the best period, I think that no one surpassed this band from '72 to '82... and what was the best album, it's very difficult to say, I'm leaning towards Foxtrot since in there is the icing on the cake, which is Supper's Ready. The era of the great Peter was amazing and then Phil's monster as a soloist and drummer devastated everything imaginable... that's how my head flew into the stratosphere! I recommend a great private concert from 1982 called Marquee that you probably already know but just in case I recommend it... look for the version that is recorded in very high fidelity, you just have to look for it on KZbin and get the one that is Hi-Fi. Not to mention another monumental concert called Chicago Live 78, it is something truly extraordinary, you also have to get the Hi-Fi version. Greetings from Buenos Aires
