I thought it was your thing for years was to say that you never judged a watch until you had it in your hand? I remember countless videos where you’d champion that you’d never make videos about watches you’d never seen or touched because in the metal things can change. You even looked down on watch KZbinrs that did. So much of your opinions are looking down on other parts of the community now. Whether it be “vapid watch dealers” or anyone that owns a sports Rolex etc. you’ve become very bitter. I agree Patek had a terrible year but I do believe the 6007 was their only saving grace. Here you talk about how much you “despise it.” When did you start polarising so much with your language and opinions? If yourself from 4/5 years ago heard your own opinions now I think you’d have called it out as the opposite of how you wanted to be and not in line with your ethos. The 6007 looks great in the metal. It’s a different look for Patek and at least with that model they tried something a little different. You mention how Rolex are boring for their incremental updates but when Patek do something different with a Calatrava you’re crying “stay in your lane making watches for old boring men!” I like the look of the 1908 but picking it as one of the watches of the years when it’s priced at nearly £20k in amongst where the holy trinity/Lange etc, truly haute horology pieces live is kind of insane. It’s nice but it’s not in the league it’s trying to be at its price. A VC Patrimony time only 40mm can be had for £21,200 which is less than 2k more than the 1908, it’s on another level than the Rolex in terms of heritage, quality of finish, movement etc. If you went for one of those not at a VC boutique you could easily negotiate a discount that made it a similar price to the Rolex. The 1908 is not a haute horology dress watch buts it’s priced like one.

It’s refreshing to see a KZbin watch channel end of the year that isn’t about how the polka-dot Rolex OP monstrosity has grown on them and is now a brilliant idea. My favorite watch of the year not mentioned in the video is the Lorier Hydra Zulu. It’s not for me, but I appreciate that they came out with a dinger that is uniquely theirs as a brand.

Catching up on this a few weeks late, but two things I want to add: •I'm definitely stealing your idea of picking up a Grand Seiko on a trip to Japan. That particular sunburst blue 44GS Is exactly what I'm eyeing too. •You gotta get yourself onto an episode of Red Letter Media! Get them to watch something low budget and Italian from the 80s, or an underappreciated watch-spotting movie, or maybe just Robocop 3.

homages have gotten better and better and are even more competitive in spec to originals at a cheaper cost in 2023. As an avid watch collector this makes me so excited to see what comes... It was a late 2022 release, but the new thinner seiko gmt movement started integrating more into gmts through 2023 and has lead to better watches as well. The overall quality of watches has improved, even cheaper basic models

For me, a microbrand in Portland, OR, USA...Vero, not for their Workhorse chrono, but instead for their Open Water Broadway LE...bead blasted and matte everywhere, the burgundy dial against a matte black bezel is just asserts tool cool. It has a great bracelet AND a Swiss heart...and a 10-year, no-questions warranty. :) Worst was my one and only Pagani Design...the only Root Beer GMT homage I could find...my now ex-wife gave it to me for Christmas last year and it died by March. Fortunately, it was purchased knowing it was trash, and so was the watch.

There isn’t a single military organization that uses any of these watches. Every military and law enforcement agency uses Casio G-Shocks. They are truly tough, practical and accurate. The only one made in Italy is Oisa, the only one that produces calibre in Italy. Merry Christmas 🎄

Regarding the independence of TGV, I'm not sure I can fully be on board with it anymore. As stated many times on the channel, TGV has collaborated or consulted for many brands and they aren't disclosed. "You may be wearing a watch I've helped design and not even know it". Unless we know which brands TGV has worked for, we can't be aware of any potential bias. Whilst I love the channel, and I am certain TGV would absolutely never just take a payment to feature a watch, let alone speak about it positively, there is an inevitable bias when discussing a brand you've worked for. Each time independence is mentioned I always think this.

once again you've hit the nail on the head! It's not about building the most expensive watch with the most gemstones and the most pointless complications. The true values, the useful functions, the beautiful design, the classic attributes, that's what characterizes a beautiful watch. Not the price tag and not pointless extremes. Attracting attention at any price should not be in the specifications of a new watch development...
@benjaminbarrera2149 ай бұрын
But people buy those horrible watches! So what if you and I agree that they should not exist, the companies do want to attract attention to their brand. Those weird Louis Vitton watches, it doesn't matter if they sell or not, it gives LV the illusion of making premium products. Sure, it's all smoke and mirrors but that's how capitalism works.
@tranquangminh76179 ай бұрын
Apologies, but what's the issue with creating a costly timepiece adorned with precious gemstones and intricate features? Aren't most watches, if not all, essentially devoid of practical purpose? Why is a reasonably priced watch, featuring a straightforward and conventional design, deemed more tasteful than a lavish one boasting gemstones, intricate complications, meticulous craftsmanship, and a unique design? Personally I feel all microbrands featured in this video is boring, merely copy and paste products, why the LV is the most interesting one.
@Not-a-bot2229 ай бұрын
@@tranquangminh7617to me it’s all subjective. While I may think an MM300 is beautiful and other may think it’s hideous. And while I think a Richard Mille is disgusting and over priced another may love it and must after it. I couldn’t care less what people wear from invicta or low tier Timex to the eye watering pieces demanding nearly 7 figures. Just keep a healthy level of respect for others like and don’t be a snob!

I was deeply disappointed with Patek this year as well. It was only recently did I learn that they didn't actually set their own gems before, and would have to outsource a different company to do that for them. Last year, they bought out that company, and then suddenly like now they don't have to pay others to do it anymore, they went insane and added as many diamonds and gems to their watches as possible.

I don’t know about having Hublot in the same category as MB&F. From the interviews I’ve seen, Max just seems like a mad scientist who is having a blast making crazy watches. I have no desire to own them, but their philosophy seems almost antithetical to the cash-grab origins of Hublot.

As far as the worst watch in your video, Richard Mille is my least liked model here. My least liked release of 2023 has to be the Islander Baiting Hollow, which really felt like hollow masturbating masquerading as watch design. The movement doesn't seem to be a true skeleton movement, and this really felt like a lazy release from Long Island Watch.

Cracking video, I was surprised to see GS land at the number 1 spot, honestly. I laughed at the RM bit though. It feels like Richard Mille indeed is born to collaborate with the Memphis group. I really hate the Memphis group. They made "de Stijl" look tasteful. Regarding watch journalism, it hasn't existed for quite a while now, but it's been propelled to new depths with Hodinkee becoming a lifestyle-marketing magazine pur sang. That all said I think one of the few neat Rolexes of the last few years was indeed the balloon. The 1908 is almost a good dress watch, but the balloon is harmless fun. Loved the comments on the AP. I may have sniggered out loud.

Merry Christmas to all. I just got a last generation Citizen NY0040 a NY0040-17L to be precise with 8203 on the dial but 8204 on the caseback which probably will make these watches collectible. For Christmas the finish is great for €200 odd quid. The lovely blue dial, the classic handset, applied lume marks, framed date window and dimpled crown. The Bezel feels great and there is no misalignment, eat your heart out Seiko. I feel that Citizen are an underrated brand compared to Seiko in Japanese watchmaking in the 1950’s they created parashock and the first truly water resistant watch in Japan. That Jacob and Co casino watch is tasteful compared to their sex scene watch. On a more positive note that new Rolex dress watch looks so superb I would probably buy it. But alas my current grails are either a Stowa Marine 36 handwind no date with decorated movement and open case back, Longines Zulu 39mm with black dial, gilt hands and indices and green bezel or the Longines Conquest heritage dress watch as either my current grail. One of the things that I loved about 2002 to 2015 Top Gear was how they would often skewer in the later years Designer speak and process. Hublot seem to have jizzed out all those watches. Old money is no longer the high priority target for high end watch makers instead it is the new money.

To call every other watch journalist/watch manufacture collaboration a "money grab" and yours pure and authentic is a bit rich. I would argue some of them are actually quite good and designed from the same place of love and respect for horology as you. Overall, a fine list if a bit judgy on the worst watches of the year. Not every watch has to be "pure class" to exist. Some people are rich and like to have fun-the Hublot Murakami a case in point. Anyway, happy 2024. Keep the content coming.

One thing I like about this channel is that you choices are different from those coming from many watch publications. And I'm happy to see that! Most of the watches on the top 10 best list I wasn't aware of, so I'm very happy to be introduced to them via this list. Regarding the top 10 worst, it's a very harsh video on Patek Philippe, but I must say, I agree to a good degree with the point you made. That calatrava model is not ugly, but it feels like an expensive toy with no mechanical innovation inside it whatsoever. That and a gem-set aquanaut are not why I personally love Patek Philippe. Personally I would be a bit kinder to the likes of LV, Richard Mille and MB&F because at least their offerings come with some mechanical merit behind them.
