The ten laws William the Conqueror imposed on the English after the invasion of 1066. Most notable for outlawing the slave trade.

William certainly wasn't a katana-plonker, and look at him - he conquered England. How many katana-wielding people have done that? Be like him, use a proper sword.

Trial by hot iron and by combat as well as the payment of the caepgeld for a start
@jrodowens
@jrodowens 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that 'caepgeld' bit is pure (West) Germanic - and the upholding of these laws and traditions would have been wise & essential for maintaining order. All the titles and castles in the world wouldn't have been of much use to the new Norman overlords if they couldn't rely on their (mostly) Anglo-Saxon vassals to fulfill their oaths, pay tribute and levy troops when needed. The Normans were fantastic empire-builders & equally great at holding on to these possessions for centuries. Be it Britain, southern Italy, Sicily or the Levant - they had a remarkable cultural finesse and aptitude for being foreign overlords, so to speak. Honestly, they remind me of the British in the late 19th century, at the height of Victoria/Pax Britannica. The British should have embraced the NORMANS as their national forebears over the silly tribal Angles & Saxons. Forget Arthur, praise be to William, Conquerer & First of his Name!

He preferred that people attest with some risk the crimes of others, and likewise to defend themselves in person and as a demonstration of their innocence, for innocence should be defended by ferocity. But he did not prefer a penalty of death, where someone could be found guilty, but rather forced blindness and castration, which is to say humiliation and impotence. Surely, that could be avoided by the innocent by a well-fought battle against their lying enemies.

The Holy Church's blessed doctrine shines through these laws. William was wise and righteous to make these laws, which are based upon The Holy doctrine of the Christian church, especially The Blessed Truth of Monotheism, which is the truth that there is only one God, YHWH, which is the greatest Commandment according to the holy Lam (St. Mark 12:29-24, Deut. 6:4) and the Second Greatest Commandment (Lev. 19:18), which clearly is the inspiration behind the prohibition of the death penalty and slavery. Amen Amen, the first and ninth laws need to be put into place today. Tho I'll admit that number 10 seems a bit far. I'd rather the gallows than castration. Non nobis domine.

No, just the opposite. It didn't say that if a Frenchman accuses an Englishman that the Frenchman will be believed, but rather that the Englishman would be given a trial to prove his innocence. Also, an Englishman could challenge a Frenchman for false accusations.

Alan Rufus made sure Normans didn't tread on his land in Richmondshire, perhaps because of this. He nagged William about the destruction and loss of life until the King went up to York to apologise in person. It seems Alan nagged him about it again on his deathbed.
