I got the Carcassonne 20th century edition a couple months ago and after constantly trying to get my wife to play she finally caved. She's not a board gamer but now she's more open to the idea. She's asking me nightly to play Carcassonne with her after dinner. I think she's enjoying beating me by always completing big cities. I keep telling her I'm going to incorporate nukes to destroy her cities haha. Anyway it is a perfect gateway game for anyone and highly recommended! I would say this is a keeper for life. If anything on my end merely for the fact it's the first game my wife is into. Next up is Cascadia.

That’s a nice array of gateway games Alex! It was cool to reflect on the games that started me off in this hobby as well. The oldest game I have is the original Hero Quest game from 1989! My best friend, my dad, and I played that for hours and hours when I was younger- great memories! Besides that my gaming collection truly began in college and here are the games that I still have from that time: The Settlers of Catan (the original name) Dixit (with a few expansions of course!) Caracassone (also with expansions) Risk Legacy (this is purely for nostalgia since we haven’t played it once the campaign was complete)

Great video. I agree wholeheartedly about Dixit at 12 players / anything over 6. But with a caveat. I taught a game one time with 12 people, from two families (a small engagement do at a friends house), where we played it in teams of 2 and it was an absolutely brilliant ice breaker/ way to get to talk to people you barely knew. Because there is no right or wrong, there was just lots of discussion that became increasingly more animated. A wonderful gaming memory.

Great Projects is a great part of the Babel expansion. I even think it's the best expansion for 7 wonders. But Tower of Babel' part is the worst one. It's sad that these expansions were not divided into two cheaper boxes.

Gosh this video makes me feel ancient. My top 10 would all be from the 1960's when I started gaming in my childhood. Couldn't part with many of the old Waddington classics for clearly sentimental reasons. However your series on games leaving your collection has impacted on my thinking on what I should keep or lose. So more recent games if they don't get played they are in danger of going.

Carcassonne was the game that got me into board games. I still own it and play it and it's many expansions yearly. Soon after, small world and kill doctor lucky joined my collection. My games stayed lighter till dead of winter came out, now I have over a hundred but still have a soft spot for those originals. My oldest game is Nightmare the video board game...the original with vhs. I love it and it comes out every Halloween. Thanks for sharing your list Alex.

Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring - The Deck building Game (good God what a name) is my oldest game. I've had it since 2013 and it was both my first hobby board game purchase and my introduction into the hobby in general. I don't play it anymore, I only have it for sentimental value. But whenever I look at it I enjoy reflecting on where I started vs where I am.

Cool experiment! I started really getting into the modern hobby around 2009-2010. Interestingly enough, most of those first couple years of significant game purchases haven't stayed with me. Here are the longest-lasting games that are still in my collection and the year I added them: 10. Coup (2014) 9. Ticket to Ride (2014) 8. Android: Netrunner (2013) 7. Jaipur (2013) 6. Bananagrams (2013) 5. For Sale (2012) 4. Survive: Escape from Atlantis (2012) 3. Dixit: Odyssey (2012) 2. Summoner Wars (2012) 1. Cosmic Encounter (2012)

Great video! Nostalgia is the reason I have so many of my "first" games still in my collection, though I am getting better at moving on from games that aren't getting played. Several games you included are ones I still keep and love and will likely never get rid of, such as 7 Wonders, Castles of Burgundy, Carcassonne and Dominion. Have played Dixit Odyssey with 12 loads (and even 16 once as I have the original too so loads of bunnies). It works well if you play with the regular rules and cap out the max points per round at 4. The stupid vote for second rules are unnecessary and overly complicated so we never use those.

Although, he likes to play Century Golem Edition instead of Jaipur but I LOVE Jaipur. Might be worth deluxifying my “coins”. Hasn’t gotten played out just yet for me. I also got Castles of Burgundy about a year ago so seeing the reprint getting deluxified is both exciting and annoying at the same time for me because I still haven’t had a chance to play my copy enough to justify an expensive Awaken Realms version. I can only assume it will be a similar price point as Robinson Crusoe which will be WAY too much.
