This is a fantastic series! We hear you mention these games all the time, so it's great to know more! Granted, I already know and love Le Havre as well :)

Le Havre is a fantastic game. The one logistical issue with the game is seeing all the building available mid to late game and not forgetting certain ones are out there because they are hard to see across the table. We have solved this by keeping purchased (player and bank purchased) buildings in a central area with ownership tokens attached to them (think Caylus with its houses in player colors) instead of each player putting their buildings in front of them in a personal tableau. Love Le Havre and it’s among Uwe best.

Great video Tom! You should have mentioned that it is getting a reprint this year. I cannot wait as I have only been in the hobby for 2 years and I didn't want to pay the massive price people are asking for it.

couldn't get through one game when I first played Le Havre 2 years ago. I was still fairly new to the hobby at the time, so seeing your enthusiasm on it makes me want to give it one more shot. Great series by the way, keep it up

Tremendous game. Easy to just play but so much depth and crunch if you want to play well. Needs another reprint of the Complete Edition.
@XShrike0 Жыл бұрын
I played this for the first time with three other players a few days ago. Everyone seemed to enjoy it. One of the players was very adamant that he will probably never want to play it with five. We all saw the turns per round issue. You would have multiple rounds a row where you got to do one thing and it didn't sound fun.

Great idea for a series and a clever place to try out new editing styles to see how they're received. I bought Le Havre on the iPad more than a year ago and I cannot get my head around it. I'm usually the rules guy in my group and I know I've learnt far more complex games, so I can only think it must be the app-based nature of the game. Definitely one I'm keen to try properly and a strong indicator of how apps of games will not replace games IMO.
@msa49983 жыл бұрын
I also have the app and I can understand what you are saying if you are trying to play the app w/o knowing how to play the game as the app tutorial is poor. My suggestion is to watch someone play on You Tube and then go back to the app and play a 2 player game and then it should click for you and will be more understandable what all the moving pieces on the screen are doing and meaning to the impact on the game. Hope that helps.

It's also really fun as a solo - if you like that. I would like the special building to have more of an impact though.

I know you love this game, but it isn't simple to teach. There is so much to learn~
@amandavallerand74097 жыл бұрын
I'd argue there is a lot of strategy to learn, but not that many rules. I can explain this game to even casual gamers in about 3 minutes, while Terra Mystica takes about 30 for a game of similar length.

Is Santiago de Cuba similar to this? If so, which one is better in terms of 'easyness', suited for 2 players, length of one game?

I'm going to really try to go out of my way this year to play the games in this series. I've never played Cosmic Encounter or Le Havre. I need to get crackin!

You might want to wait a bit on Le Havre, unless you know someone that owns it. It is super expensive right now, but it is getting a reprint (maybe) later this year.

When playing with 4 players, could you not just give the 4th player an extra action on his/her turn? Also what are your thoughts on trading resources as a house rule?

I'm really enjoying this series. I heard in one of the podcasts about a Christian based board gaming podcast that some of the dice tower people are connected with. Does anyone know what it is called? I can't remember. Thanks!

Lots of similarities to Ora et Labora. Many of the positives mentioned of Le Havre can also be said of Ora, no? I wonder why Ora didn't make as much of an impression on Tom. In some ways it feels that Uwe improved Le Havre with Ora et Labora?

Ah, poor, dear Le Havre, in her youth one of the radiant beauties of the French Channel coast; in her post-operative reconstruction a brutalist/functionalist mess of a place, so depressing and depressed-looking that not even a sunny day can relieve the gloom. It’s not Le Havre’s fault, after all its fate was visited on countless north European towns and cities around 1944, but what Mr Perret, - for ‘twas he who decided what this town with such a promising name (the haven; echoes of paradise?), - thought this town needed was a post-war makeover in the manner of every grim, grey, brutalist, godforsaken place behind the Iron Curtain? I walked out the station one day and spent the next hour searching in vain for relief from the Perret-created hell-scape. All in vain. Line after line, like so many massed Soviet troops, of relentless concrete. Yes, concrete, that wonder-material beloved of every brutalist/functionalist architect worth their salt. Even the sea at the end of the (tram) tracks seemed sad, forlorn, withdrawn, sighing daily for what once was. And it was. I’ve checked the old photos. However, on the upside, what Le Havre *does* have, is lovely, lively, often edgy people and a fast train to anywhere else.

I agree on the players count with Tom on this game. I'll never play with 5 players again, and 4 is pushing it.

Agricola is Uwe's best design to date (imo). Le Havre is a good game, but there should be a cap on coke production. Everyone tries to sell massive amounts of coke late game and that's just boring.
@bushibayushi7 жыл бұрын
If you like sandbox games you'll like Caverna better. I love the tightness of Agricola, the "organic feel" and thematic sense of actions in the game and the huge variety of cards.

Four players is yuk. Three players is great but you're still wishing you were able to work the fourth player in. Five is unthinkable.

@dddmmm217 жыл бұрын
Funny how my experience with Le Havre is the opposite. All those great choices Tom alludes to, I find them quite fake. Yes, they are there, but rarely those options will enable you to do what you want to do. No matter what you do, you always realize just by the end of the round that you won't be able to use all those resources to do the amazing thing you wanted to do, rather you will need to convert them cheaply to food to feed those STUPID workers... God, I hate this game... hehe

Tom, you're explative great. Don't worry, I said it to myself. I'm the Chairman of the American Communist Party. I'm completely convinced that board games and comic books should be integrated into education. I attend. Catholic mass fairly regularly. As does a transexual on the central committee. However, I can see that you are a true Cristian! Full disclosure I am a Marxist but I am also a postmodernist. I love you Tom.
