Exactly. And I like the approach they took to it. These are the lowest ranked, but not the worst, because there really aren't any absolutely terrible MCU films. The worst movie here was Thor: The Dark World. The worst Batman is Batman and Robin. The worst DC films are Catwoman and Steel. These aren't even close.

To be fair some scores are just confusing as fuck, like, is Black Panther really the best MCU film? And Ant Man and The Wasp should be on the lower side of the ranking yet apparently has a better score than Infinity War, and for some reason Civil War barely made the top 10, from which The Winter Soldier was left out, then there's Eternals, which apparently is even worst than The Dark World although it's more interesting and at least had some sort of ambition. I honestly think Rotten Tomatoes scores make less sense the more you see them, and they are kinda biased when it comes to Marvel.

Got to watch Eternals last night and I gotta say it got off to a strong start. The various deviant designs are great. But… I found it meandered a lot in the first half. Lots of exposition. Lots of jumping between time periods. The dialogue and characters felt a bit stiff. BUT - about half way through there’s a big reveal about the mythology surrounding the celestials and the eternals, and the plot comes into focus. I don’t know anything about the comics so I found this really really cool. Then from that point onwards it gathered a lot of momentum, the characters seemed to come to life, and it built to a very epic and satisfying conclusion. I ended up really loving it.

I don't think age of ultron is good but it feels the most the picking up a random issue of Avengers and for that I love it. No comic book movie feels as much like a random comic at the barbershop than AOU. I know most people find that experience frustrating but it harkens back to what comics felt like as a kid. Idk I guess not enough people read comics in waiting rooms as a kid.
@darky15953 жыл бұрын
But Ultron is not a stand up Comedian in the comics.
@forty_two423 жыл бұрын
@@darky1595 Yes because in the comics Ultrons personality is based on Hank Pyms personality. Hank Pym has Bi-polar disorder and is implied to have light schizophrenia. He's arrogant, quick to violence, and has a super fragile ego. In the movies Ultrons personality is based on that universes version of Tony Stark. He's arrogant, cheesy, and this universes version of quick witted. Idk I always thought it made sense. Maybe I thought to hard about it though.
@darky15952 жыл бұрын
@@forty_two42 Ultron in the comics was never an Evil Hank Pym, this is a huge misconception about him. Ultron in the comics is basically Hank Pym but went Full Pysho which explain why he mostly have a different personality than Hank pym and only shares some similarlities with him. Ultron only had Hank's Full Personality when he merged with him in a comic book called "Rage Of Ultron" which created a all new personality of Ultron that is called "Pymtron" that has Hank's Full Personality, if Ultron was always an evil Hank pym like you are claiming then there is no point of this new incarnation of ultron that has Hank Pym's Full personality. So from a comic standpoint the way ultron was portrayed in that movie is completely wrong and inaccurate to the comics, the MCU completely misunderstood the character or maybe they understood him but reimagined him as joss Whedon himself admitted in a interview were he said that MCU Ultron won't be the all powerful menacing killing machine you see in the comics but a cheap copy of loki. If we go in a comic accurate portrayal of ultron then he should only have Tony's personality when he is all serious and at his worse and that's it, he should only reflect that cold serious dark part of Tony and that's it, just like how he was portrayed in the trailers and when he first appeared in the movie at the party scene. Yes, he would share some similarities with him but not the extent that we saw in the movie were he was basically a evil rip off of him.
@forty_two422 жыл бұрын
@@darky1595 I absolutely follow your logic I just don't agree, which is fine. It's kind of the point of art, to be personal. I don't find Ultron to be an Evil Hank just an Indulgance into the dark parts of Hanks personality. Same goes with Ultron and Tony in the movies. Even though Tony loves is father he doesn't want to live in his shadow, Ultron chops of Claws/Claues arm for comparing him to Tony. I think overall Ultron is an unadaptable character and they did what they though worked within the logic of the universe. Like I said in my original comment it's not a good movie, it just feels like grabbing a random issue of Avengers to read on the bus or in a waiting room and that very nostalgic for me personally

Agreed. Tony was motivated by fear. There a theme of family and letting go of the past. There was more comraderie. Clint got some development. And it's intro with the nightmare scene is far better than a car chase with an insane Loki
@thedarkemissary3 жыл бұрын
As a standalone sure. Definitely more emotional and character beats. But the original benefits from much higher payoffs and overall impact. Age of Ultron serves more as a quasi-origin story for Wanda and Vision. Ultron himself is just a one-off villian. And he plot deals more directly into the Civil War storyline than it does into the Infinity Stones storyline. It actually kind of reminds me of a joke that goes "Hitler and Stalin are walking down the street talking when a man overhears 'so it's agreed we'll kill a million people and one dentist' to which the man comes up and asks 'why a dentist?' which makes Stalin say 'see? I told you no one would care about the million'", I think that Hank Pym gets pointed out so much cause it's on a much more personable scale. Wow I'm sorry for that rant, Hank is my favorite hero.

On Iron Man 3... my main issue with that one is that the villain plot is hard to understand. The individual components of the plot are great, it just doesn't feel all that satisfying when it all comes together. Like, he had a plot to kill the president, but his side plot with the fake terrorist (which was outstanding by itself) was just a cover up for when his soldiers failed... it just doesn't feel like it clicks together. Beyond that though, it has some of the best acting and character development for Tony Stark outside of Civil War. The kid in the restaurant that asks tony "how did you get out of the wormhole?" is deeply creepy and one of the most spine tingling moments in the entire MCU. His interactions with the engineer kid after he crashes his suit are incredible. It's such a parallel to Stark's own father issues and it's such a great vehicle for his resolution of some of his anxiety issues. It's just fantastic. AND ANOTHER THING. The "barrel of monkeys" mid-air rescue was the first scene in the MCU that I skipped back and immediately rewatched. (My first viewing was on DVD). Fantastic! So anyway, Iron Man 3 is one that's actually worse than the sum of it's parts, and for that I blame the convoluted villain plot. Overall though I'd say it's vastly underrated.
@LeedleLee4573 жыл бұрын
6:50 Yes, that's Wing Chun. Robert Downey Jr actually practices Wing Chun in real life. It's the martial arts that Ip Man uses, and was made popular by Bruce Lee. Tony Stark can even be seen wearing a Bruce Lee shirt (one that he owns irl) in one of the Avengers movie.

Any review that's nuanced could either end up as a ripe tomato or a splat on that stupid web site, and sometimes it seems as if they decide which it is by a coin flip. I've seen a ton of reviews on that site where, for instance, the critic's basically saying "yeah, it's fine, but this could've been better" and RT sometimes rates that as a bad review, other times as a good one. Because they have no system for counting movies as fine, with some reservations. It's only "best movie ever" or "worst movie ever", much like ... oh, right. Point is, if a director has their own style, or makes any bold visual or storytelling choices, then some people will like it, some won't. So, imo, any movie that's genuinely interesting is likely to get an average-to-bad score on RT.

While I agree rotten tomatoes has issues with its system and would benefit from other options or sorting values, but that large assumption you've made at the end is simply untrue. There are plenty of stylized and unique movies on there with high scores, both indie and big budget. At the end of the day rotten tomatoes is simply a collective of peoples opinions. And a lot of people didn't particularly think eternal was all that good, simple as that. Doesn't mean it's a trend that movies deserving attention get shafted on the website, that's a huge generalization.

The fact that Eternals has such a low score on Rotten Tomatoes is shocking to me, like Black Widow has a good score get Eternals doesn’t? Is the movie as bad as these critics say or did they feel it veered to far from Marvels roots and that’s the only reason it’s bad, I guess we’ll find out soon

Rotten Tomatoes is a "likability" scale, not a quality scale, though. By metacritic average, it's close to Hulk and Dark World at 52%. That is: not good, but hardly awful. Seems like some actually negative reviews come out just recently, IIRC yesterday there were none (metacritic also groups reviews into positive, mixed and negative.)

Thanks for asking for my list. I am putting Black Widow at the bottom (maybe because it is the only one I saw at home) because the stakes felt like they were zero (Black Widow survived long enough to die in Endgame), and the whole "we ARE a family" message felt forced and never worked for me. Iron Man 3 would be second last because of the Mandarin fake out and it felt so disjointed as a movie. And I will go on record as saying I have never understood why Thor and Thor Dark World are rated so low. I enjoyed them both.

Avengers: Age of Ultron was about the journey of the Avengers to become beings of mythology, true heroes after confronting their dark reflection in the form of Ultron, who believes that saviour figures like the Avengers are holding humanity back. We get dreams sequences showing Tony's fear about his lack of control and fear of the future (which later manifests into Ultron). We're shown Natasha's fear that she'll never be anything more than the manipulative killing machine the people in her past made her into. We're shown Captain America's fear that without war, he has no place or home in the world. Ultron sees himself as the saviour the Avengers wish they could be and in a way he has a point. When Ultron first meets the team, they're celebrating a victory that in Ultron's mind they haven't earned. People like Strucker are still around standing in the way of real peace. Ultron comes to the conclusion that as long as humanity has free will, peace will never be achievable. Ultron is desperate for control to a point where he is willing to get the population down so he can rule over what's left and force them to act in accordance to his idea of morality. Ultron's way of achieving peace would be undeniably better for the world statistically, but when you take away humanity's choice to do bad, you also take away any chance for personal growth. We see this in Nick Fury and how much he's changed since Winter Soldier. There's a Greek marble statue of the Avengers at the end of Age of Ultron. Hawkeye's wife calls the Avengers "gods." The Avengers are brought down to earth (Clint's farm) from high above the world (Avengers tower) to be reminded what the most important part of being a hero is; preserving life. The Avengers end up with a bunker that much like Hawkeye's farm is closer to the ground and more connected to humanity. This shows that Stark and by extension the Avengers have overcome their resentment and need for control and have come the accept their role in the world as preservers of life. Also Vision is Jesus and him lifting Mjolnir shows that the Avengers have divine approval. Symbolism "You want to protect the world, but you don't want it to change. How is humanity saved if it's not allowed to... evolve? " - Ultron "Ultron thinks we're monsters, that we're what's wrong with the world. This isn't just about beating him, it's about whether he's right." - Captain America

Fun Fact: The martial arts dummy you see in Iron Man 3 is Wing Chun, which is famously known to be practiced by Master Ip Man (there actually exists several film, played by Donnie Yen and other actors, but actually just bother watching Donnie's films), who is better known as the master and mentor of the one and only Bruce Lee.

I saw The Eternals last night and I thought it was okay. It feels a bit slow and heavy at times and the characters aren't that compelling, but it definitely wasn't as boring as Thor: The Second Thor. I think people that love "epic movies" are going to like this movie, but for me it lacked humor and an interesting villain.
@robertfrost82643 жыл бұрын
I don't care for the non-stop quips in every single Marvel movie. I'm glad there's less humor. Only seen the trailers but the silly Disney jokes don't fit the tone of this. The "Ikea Fall Collection" thing in the one trailer made my eyes roll into the back of my head. Everything looks so good and interesting and then, BAM garbage joke.

Take this with the caveat that being a fan of the source material inherently makes it harder for me to always enjoy the MCU. I'll never say everything has to be exactly alike in adaptations...But without going into all of the source material issues I have with Iron Man 3, Iron Man 2 (which isn't great itself), is leagues better than 3 to me just for the always fantastic Sam Rockwell hamming it up as Justin Hammer.

Try to avoid controversy, but have always found Age of Ultron to be much, much more entertaining than Avengers. The characters are better established, the team dynamic is more solidified, and while this may also be attributed by the passage of time in-universe, it was a great evolution of the work which had come before. Vision is great, Ultron is great, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch were instant hits, and the loss felt much more personal rather than just a plot convenience/Macguffin. Still one of my top MCU films, and riding on the back of Winter Soldier and Guardians the year prior, it did not disappoint. If you can get past some of the silly moments in Avengers, Ultron shouldn’t be as much of a world-building slog as it’s described to be. The criticism it receives on tonal dissonance is entirely understandable, but that’s also part of its comic book charm. It’s the most comic-booky MCU film.

It's true that user scores have some dodgy-ness in them but there can't be any doubt that critics are pretty much the same and can be extremely biased at times. Best bet would really be to take the mid point of the two in terms of the pure response to the film but understand that sometimes you have to pick one and go with it.

*You gotta love this guy. Yesterday I watched a video of his that was over 5 years old in which he was giving away a loot crate. I thought it would be funny to ask if the sweepstakes was still going on. When I left the comment something told me that he is the kind of guy that would find that funny and respond to it with a joke, and he did. He told me the contest ended the day before. Someone that Likes his audience that much, and will like respond to a comment on a five year old video definitely deserves a like. So give this video a like if you like being liked by a guy that is like really likable.*

I honestly just don't understand the POV that Black Widow would have been better if we didn't know that she dies in End Game. Honestly, you already have really strong faith that the hero of the movie is going to survive the movie and that the bad guy is going to lose, and if that doesn't happen then it gets spoiled on the internet immediately. There are no real stakes when watching an action movie because you know what's going to happen. At no point when watching Iron Man was I worried that he would die, even when they blew up his house. Why would you all of the sudden be turned off now because you know that Black Widow will survive her solo film because she dies in a different one? There are so many other reasons to not like that movie, and you choose the weakest.
@gingernytemare3 жыл бұрын
I think it's not just because we know she won't die in this movie, but that we know she's already dead. I'm completely uninterested in her character growing or changing because I know that 1: she's not that different in Infinity War, so she obviously won't change by much, but also 2: even if she were to grow as a character it doesn't matter, because she won't be in any more films, so all that progression would be wasted anyway.
