Hello everyone, just wanted to wish you all the best of luck in your exam tomorrow. If you found this video useful and would like some more detailed analysis, I also have four videos on the key themes of Romeo and Juliet, featuring more key quote analysis. They can all be found in my Romeo and Juliet playlist, accessible via this link: kzbin.info/aero/PLA78A2-yUO6_6I5nuqEqWQ7Pc329LkXD2. Also, for those of you with any urgent questions regarding Romeo and Juliet, I will be around for most of today so please post any important questions you have as a separate comment on this video (I probably won’t be able to respond to all comments but I will try my best). I also have videos on Jekyll and Hyde, An Inspector Calls, Macbeth, and more on my channel so do check those out if you found this video helpful.

Dr Aidan what video do you explain primacy effect in.
@DrAidan5 жыл бұрын
I mention it in a few of the videos so the easiest thing is to quickly explain it here. In essence, the Primacy Effect describes how we (as viewers and readers) tend to categorise characters according to what they do and say when they first appear (or how they are described by others): do we think they are heroic, evil, cowardly etc. In the case of Romeo and Juliet, Romeo is initially presented as the melancholic Petrarchan lover who mopes over an unattainable young woman - Rosaline. He changes during the play as he takes action and talks with Juliet and then marries her. He also begins as someone who hates the feud with the Capulets - later he almost inadvertently becomes a central figure in that feud when he kills Tybalt. Alternatively, if you got set part of 1.1 (where Gregory and Samson argue), you could say that the Primacy Effect lets us know that these are families who have been involved in arguments for years and their language - words like choler - reflect that intolerance and hatred. I hope that helps. If you have another question on this do send me a reply. And best of luck with the exam.

Lux Legend - if it helps, you can think of this play as Romeo’s story until 3.1 and Juliet’s after that. In 1.1 Romeo is melancholy because Rosaline doesn’t like him (feather of lead quotes). In 1.4 Mercutio persuades him to go to the feast (the queen mab speech). In 1.5 he meets Juliet (lips two blushing pilgrims). In 2.2 they agree to marry (Juliet is the sun and swear not by the moon). In 3.1 Mercutio and Tybalt are killed - a major turning point. Then Juliet waits for Romeo (3.2 - gallop apace) and they meet for the last time (3.4 - speech about dawn and birds). Act 4 is about the Capulets and marriage prep + the potion plot. In act 5 Romeo thinks she’s dead - and they both kill themselves. Hope that summary might help you - good luck.

what do you mean in 6:43 when you say Juliet is torn between the two opposites?
@DrAidan3 жыл бұрын
At this point in the play she has just secretly married Romeo so she’s in love with him; yet she’s now discovered that he’s killed Tybalt. So she’s trying to reconcile two opposing feelings. She’s in love with this person yet she discovers he’s killed a member of her family. Has she been deceived? Is his outer appearance and behaviour towards her hiding an inner evil? So she’s torn between her love for him and the fact that she should hate him for killing Tybalt. That’s why Shakespeare uses oxymoron here: to highlight these seemingly incompatible sides of Romeo. Hope that helps.

You don't have to remember all of the quote: I'd pick out a phrase from within it and then paraphrase the rest. They will essentially want to know that you understand the meaning of the line and that you can place it within the story. i.e.which theme it illustrates. Good luck with the exam.

My mock exam is in two days, and I can't memorize all the quotes r.i.p.
@DrAidan6 жыл бұрын
you got hacked : The way I remember the quotes is to learn them half a line at a time. If it’s the one that starts ‘From forth the fatal loins’ I begin with a key word to prompt my memory. I would use ‘fourth’ which sounds like ‘forth’. I then learn ‘From forth the fatal loins’ by repeating it several times. I then ask who do these ‘loins’ belong to and it is ‘these two foes’. I then repeat ‘these two foes’. and then add it to the first phrase. Now I’ve got one line. The next thought is ‘a pair of star-crossed lovers’. I repeat ‘From forth the fatal loins of these two foes’ and then add on ‘a pair of star-crossed lovers’. Finally I repeat everything I’ve learned so far a few times and then add ‘take their life’. I repeat the whole quote several times then do something else for 2 minutes. Then I try and remember the whole quote. Remember your key word is ‘fourth’. You should be able to learn several quotes in as little as one hour in this way. I don’t know if this will work for you, but I hope you might find it useful for the exam and I hope it goes well.

@LampoLaggins6 жыл бұрын
In the AQA English Lit GCSE Exam coming tomorrow, I have been told that you will get marks with coming up with your own interpretations on the quotes you will be explaining. As a student, i think this is quite useful as to when the person will mark the question, they can sense that you can make different alternative interpretations of quotes and explaining them well. This will give you marks under AO2. I think this is what you mean.
@prinny_a7406 жыл бұрын
you will most likely get an extract from the play and told to explain how it presents something or someone as something in that extract and then across the play as a whole. You have to link it to the rest of the play if not then you will barely get half marks
@DrAidan6 жыл бұрын
Prinny_A If it’s helpful, these are the key moments in the play - to help with orientation. 1. Scene 1.1 - Romeo displays a desire to be in love and talks about its contradictory nature (feather of less etc.) 2. Scene 1.4 - tries to resist going to the feast - the dream and Mercutio’ s Queen Mab speech that persuades him to go 3. Scene 1.5 - meeting Juliet 4. Scene 2.2 - going to the Capulet house and committing to Juliet 5. The marriage (off-stage) and warning from the Friar about ‘violent delights 6. Scene 3.1 - the murders of Mercutio and Tybalt 7. Scene 3.5 - the final meeting of Romeo and Juliet (alive) 8. Act 4 - dominated by dramatic irony - we know what they don’t. 9. Act 5 - the tragic denouement

I do not understand the accent section? Why would two people who reside in the same city, who possess the same social status have so divergent accents? I also do not understand the cut and shut bible corollary? What has this do with R&J - because this happens here it can in the play?? Is it not possible, and possibly more likely, that Shakespeare was pointing out Tybalt's arch and OTT hate of the Montagues by the fact he remembered the voice of Romeo as that of a Montague - and only remembered his voice for that end? A bit like in the bible when someone heard Jesus speak, some time elapsed and they heard him speak again and they remembered it was Jesus? Seems a strikingly spurious thing to direct students to - I can't see many examiners awarding much for such 'analysis'.

Maybe to show how senseless the enmity between two families are? Seeing as tybalt proclaims his disdain at a montague-seeming voice alone

This is not helpful, the quotes are too long. Have easier to remember shorter ones

Theo Hoadley these videos are sickkkk if you find the quotes too long find smaller ones within them

I have no time for sarcasm from an English teacher. I have a literature exam tommorow and I cannot find any decent quotes in which I can write a few bits about! For Romeo and Juliet and Jekyll and Hyde!!!

Theo. My reply was for Ayah, just saying thank you for those comments on the video - they weren't directed at you. I hope that you found the quotes you needed and good luck with your exam today.
