Misreading Scripture is a series that takes common scriptures and helps you to see them with a new set of eyes. Many of these are scriptures we have been innocently misinterpreting. And once we gain insight into the culture and context of the passage, all of a sudden it becomes clear in an entirely new way.

Everything about the story of the Magi is just so fascinating to me! They go to Herod. (That part makes sense. They’re coming to worship a new king, so it stands to reason that they would go to the palace.) But they ask Herod “ where is he that is born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East and are come to workshop him.” If they just believe he’s a new king, of a country that isn’t even theirs, why do they care? Why travel so far to see the newest king of some other country. I mean, maybe if they’re diplomats and they’re trying to get in good favor with a new monarch. But Israel is a vassal state of Rome. It has no power. It’s not the kind of country that you travel across vast deserts with treasures just to have good diplomatic relations with their new king. The only way this story makes any sense is if they knew that Jesus was the Son of God, the Savior and Redeemer of the world. But even that part is amazing. Because for a long time, Jesus’ followers (who initially were all Jews) believed that He was THEIR messiah, THEIR savior, THEIR God. Not to be shared with the Gentiles. I would love it if you did a deep dive into the wise men and their story. It just seems like there are so many more layers than the brief words that Matthew gives us.

@@Travisaballou Yeah, I did know that. I just think for them to have passed this knowledge down so carefully, and for these men to have made such a dangerous and long journey, they must have known more about who Christ really would be than even His own followers knew at first.

@@ackhak Think about this also another verse from Daniel that he had prophesied before the Babylonian captivity, before what we had spoken of above. Daniel 9:24 (KJV 1900) 24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.

@@Travisaballou spot on! Many people misunderstand or don’t make this connection thinking the magi/wise men were some random bedouin astrologists. Daniel was great in the Babylonian kingdom and had great knowledge and wealth. The wise men knew the signs in the night sky and the coming of Christ because Daniel had this prophecy preserved for those later who would see and know the sign. The same sign described in Book of Revelation. These wise men brought gifts that likely Daniel kept in provision for Christ’s arrival, which was needed to support Joseph and Mary’s escape into Egypt with the promised Messiah.

Growing up in a church of pat, prepackaged Sunday school answers created a tremendous amount of doubt in my faith. For years I was stifled in my search for deeper understanding. Your channel has been quite literally life changing for me. My questions aren’t offensive to God and He wants me to understand the cultural, historical context of His Word. If His Word is living and active, not static, it should be dynamically engaged with, and that means questions. It’s been tremendously relieving and refreshing to come to your channel and learn something new and invigorating each time. Thank you for this good work, and blessings on your efforts for the Kingdom 💛

@@BrandonRobbinsMinistry dearest friend. I encourage you to listen to a few podcasts (available on YT) by James Lindsay, called "New Discourses". Specifically, regarding the theology of Marxism, or Paolo Friere's marxification of the church. Things like "social justice" "systemic racism" "oppression of the minorities" are all cultural Marxist buzzwords. The podcasts will help you recognize the infiltration of the church by another, false theology. James reads their documents and exposes the goal to destroy the church body. I often lament, amongst brothers and sisters in Messiah, that so much of what we have translated we have mistranslated. Context is key to all Bible interpretation…. The Bible is the Word of God, divinely inspired and perfect IN ITS ORIGINAL LANGUAGE. That is not to say there is no value in English translations, but that translation leads to error… and even minor errors can lead to major ones.

I’m reading my Bible front to back for the very first time and literally highlighted the verse where Jesus says to hate your family and I put a question mark there so I could look into it later but I forgot until you mentioned it in this video. I also had some confusion about Noah being caught naked by Ham and didn’t understand why it was as bad as they made it seem but I’m great full for the clarification.i did think I understood the verse about being a lukewarm but I thought your first explanation that is taught by most was correct and now it does make more sense as well. It just seems like God would prefer a lukewarm relationship not 100% committed than total rejection even if he prefers a close relationship and so you have helped me tremendously not just for myself but so I can explain to others as well. In the Bible it was not said spare the rod and spoil the child 🚸 but, what it did say is, a father doesn't love his children that spares the rod. Everyone thought this meant to spank your children. The shepherds didn't beat their sheep. The rod was to guide them to stay on the path and to pull them out of holes they might fall in to. I read the Bible 4 times when I was young and I got a better understanding of it than even preachers who I still wonder if they even read it once.

@@messianicteachingspage Who here is causing division? The story of Jonah is a beautiful foreshadowing of the salvation we receive from Christ. Christ Himself made that clear. Its actually an important story for that reason. Unfortunately a lot of people see it as a silly fable. I think Sunday school deserves some of the blame for that. Regardless, Jonah spends three days in what he calls "the belly of Sheol" (the realm of the dead) and then (again in his own words) has his "life brought up from the pit" which leads to the repentance and salvation of a city of sinners and Gentiles at that. The Christological implications are powerful. That is why I bring it up.

Well, regarding Noah. The scripture has actually been adjusted and even changed in some places. There were actually 2 versions of genesis originally and they didn't correspond. So they were both merged into one book. This is why there are so many ify parts. One might argue that in fact it was not ham discovering the nakedness of Noah but actually Canaan descovering hams nakedness. It would make 0 sense that ham (a married man) would rape his father. Plus ham was the middle son, not the youngest. Scholars have some explaining to do.

Actually the Greek word 'κήτος' comes from χασμα which in turn comes from 'χαο' meaning 'to gape, yawn'. In Greek mythology, the Cetus was a serpent-like seamonster. The Hebrew word תנין in turn comes from תן which means 'jackal, dragon' (jackals are devil's symbols in ancient Hebrew tradition for their cunningness and similarities to a domestic dog. This also possibly explains why muhammad exterminated an entire dog race for believing that dog was a devil). The תנין and Cetus were similar because they come from 'ouroboros' myths in various (cosmological) folk myths allover the world. This is one of the myths shared by all peoples, just like gaint myths, dragons, and flood and creation myths.

Everyone watching this video is going to die at some point and each of you will answer to God for every idle word spoken, deed done by your hands and the motivation behind it. Now, the evidence for this is that even if you say you don't believe me, your conscience bears witness that I speak the truth and you know there is a creator to whom you will answer to one day. Are you ready? Your "good actions" you rely on are detestable to God, lest you try to negotiate your way into Heaven. Only by grace and through faith shall you receive salvation. Seek Christ while you still can, only He can forgive your sins. Repent and be born again, of water and the Holy Spirit. I say this without judgement and in absolute love when I tell you that Jesus is the light of the world, in Him there is no darkness...

Wonderful teaching Brandon. Concerning the "lukewarm" Laodicean church, it's interesting that in Hebrew the word for "lukewarm" - posher, is from the same three-letter root as the word for "compromise" - peshara. Could there be some underlying Hebrew thought behind Jesus' words? Is he saying that the Laodiceans were compromising their faith. I'd love to know what your take is on this.

@sunnyjohnson992
@sunnyjohnson992 Жыл бұрын
Psalm 82:6 is referring to human judges in Israel. This is appropriate since they were to serve as God’s spokesmen and representatives. Jesus is quoting from Psalm 82:6 in John 10:34. Again, godlike ones were the human judges in Israel that served as his representatives. Similarly, Moses was told he was to “serve as God” to Aaron and to Pharaoh. (Exodus 4:16)

Love your in-depth teaching on difficult and misunderstood verses. But Matthew 15 the "dog woman" of Cannan, you didn't finish the story. Her child was set free because of her faith. You put the "pecking order" correctly that is missed by our culture, but the conversation is so beautiful.

I saw a documentary that said The Fish is the name of a constellation of stars in the area. Potentially, Jonah was not inside an animal but in the water beneath The Fish constellation.

When working from Matthew, I wish you would use Hebrew Matthew, (which I believe was the original), it would save going from Greek to suspected Hebrew to Hebrew thought, Nehemiah Gordon (see KZbin channel) I think is helpful on this. The Magi were mentioned several times in heroditus’ history as coming from Babylon, king makers, wise men, and the same group that Daniel lead during, and probably after the exile, which makes sense of why they knew the prophecies (except the later prophecies about Bethlehem) and were looking out for the signs and interested in God’s people.

As far as I can see, it's not "blessed are the poor" (8:37) but "blessed are the poor in spirit". As for the Syro-Phoenician woman (12:41), reading the entire context (Mark 6 v 53 to 7:31) it seems to me Jesus went out of his way (literally) to meet her. As for the body being a temple (16:54), here is a good illustration of why everybody should have a King James Bible. In it, the singular (thou, thee) is distinguished from the plural (you, ye).

Jonah 1:17 (KJV) Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. What I find interesting is it said the Lord had “Prepared“ a great finish ….

Technically speaking, a Whale Shark could correctly be described as a “great fish”, or a Giant Grouper could be the “great fish”. Either one, or any other large species that could easily fit a human in its mouth would have been “prepared” by God to swallow Jonah. In all likelihood, God had this “great fish” following the ship through the storm, so that it could get to Jonah quickly. (cue the “Jaws” soundtrack…sorry, my lamentable sense of humor😆)

Another couple of things about the fish or whale or whatever it was that swallowed Jonah. It says "Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah." So what does "prepared" mean? Most assume it means that God brought a sea animal sufficient to swallow Jonah (and keep him alive in its belly for three days) to the spot where Jonah would enter the water. But, it could also mean that God ALTERED an existing animal in some way. So maybe an animal that normally couldn't possibly do this was changed so that it could. And for that matter, when it comes to picking out which specific animal could have done this, people tend to ignore one huge class of animals, which is animals that are now extinct. So when people say things like, "It couldn't have been a great white shark, because . . . reasons." But could it have been a Megalodon or some other creature we assume wasn't around in Jonah's day? Perhaps it was the last of its kind (whatever kind that might be) kept alive by God for that specific task.

The bible doesn't say "three" wise men. It also doesn't say "numerous." The idea that there were 3 comes from the gold, frankincense and myrrh.

Water hydrates best at room temperature. I have been misunderstood, mocked, and rejected by worldly people for decades because of my faith, my love for God, and my rejection of mainstream sin. Still, a huge portion of my current situation feels like a punishment for some sin I don't remember, something that has somehow earned me punishment despite my sanctification through faith. I know it's not my preference for lukewarm water. Still, I feel punished for something I don't know I did.

I know that feeling, especially as a little child. I remember going along, everything fine, then tripping and falling hard. I felt like God had smacked me down because of something, because I couldn't figure out what I could have tripped on. It was scary.
This SPOT in the HOLY LAND forever changed how I read the Bible!
