The Madsen machine gun is still in use with Brazilian paramilitaries today. World's oldest light machine gun. Designed in 1896 and adopted into service in 1902.

Amazing how ahead of it's time the Madsen was, at least 25 years. Imagine how much advantage large numbers of Madsens would have provided to the combatants at the beginning of WW1.

The Madsen machine gun is a Danish-developed and manufactured machine gun that was patented in 1901. It was sold to 34 countries and was used in many wars, including the Russo-Japanese War, World War I and World War II. In Brazil, the Madsen machine gun was used by the army, who later donated them to the police. In 2008, the Brazilian police chose to switch to another make. There are also reports that the machine gun was used by drug gangs in Argentina.

@@Gert-DK There has been footage of it in use much later than 2008. I believe the most recent I've seen was from 2022. Wikipedia is bullshit.

@@JizzMasterTheZeroth You are right, I actually found indication of it in use as late as 2023.

Maxim MG began service in 1886, some years before Madsen MG.

I think the Maxim was invented by Hiram Maxim of the US.

Hiram Maxim was indeed an American. However, the us army rejected the Maxim gun. Maxim was good friends with one of the Vickers family, and the Vickers firm built it (and improved it). When Maxim retired ( I believe he looked at aircraft design), the final version of the gun was called the Vickers gun.

Not to be confused with Hiram Percy Maxim, one of the founders of ARRL.

Maxim sold manufacturing licenses to pretty much everyone. British, Germans, Russians all used versions of it, with differences in caliber and small parts.

I can't believe I have to turn the subtitle on just to know the real references "62 rounds per minute", are you saying that most old-fashion bolt action rifles can shoot faster than this 'machine gun'?

Apparently the Ukrainians love, absolutely love, the M2 Browning
