To clear up the continuity errors R6-H5 R7-A7 and R7-D4 are just the names of the astromechs and not their actual model line A Lucasfilm executive stated that the names could be part of a longer serial number so R7's full number could be R2-R7-A7- etcetera etcetera it most likely that the droid itself is just another R2 unit and Dave Filoni most likely named other droids different numbers because having a bunch of droids being called R2 and R4 would be confusing as hell since when we hear R2 and R4 we think of R2-D2 and R4-P17

Tbh I love that starwars Droid market is so variable, half of models seem to be "see if it sticks" and the rest are the result of aftermatket customization which for tabletop games in setting result in some fun Droid chars people can make. My favorite char I created for a "scum and villany" smuggler and bounty hunter campaign was a prototype corporate collaboration project at the end of the clone wars...Between baktoid, holowan, and czerka Corp. It was "suposed" to be an "elite, but recource effective" assasin Droid to be used to hunt down the remaining jedi, or dispose of high value targets... It was a commando Droid with upgraded servos, several hidden weapons and a hidden compartment for its primary weapon system, and upgraded sensor package (more emotive eyes), but using a prototype of the more advanced IG series processors and internals...czerka basically just made the weapon which was a custom made, limited run folding slugthrower marksmen (more like a anti-material) rifle/scatter gun combi-weapon of the finest quality (my char was VERY attached to it and often hated using other weapons if forced to) Long story short...his limited line (like 10 droids) that was sent to be "tested" by the rising empire was also home to a number of other droids to be "tested" for capabilities in the new imperial military market...including IGs...which subsequently went rouge, killed the crew and left but not before "disposing of the competition" by dropping all the storage pods of my chars droids out on some backwater world to burn up in atmosphere... My chars pod was left in the dunes until the end of the empire, and subsequently found by some scaver, whom sold it not knowing what it was to the party... Really, really fun char to play. Not a psychopathic Droid...but certainly a sociopath that pushed for "effective, efficient decisions" and "recource management"...though clearly hid a almost disconcerting desire to "prove there worth...often by keeping track of kills both numerically, and exceptional cases)

The occurrences of anachronistic numbering in Clone Wars era droids (using number designation that seem decades before they canonically should exist) is not necessarily a continuity error. Using the Letter-Number pattern (the D2 in R2 D2) would only allow numbering of up to 260 units . For general sale, it is not such a big deal having a number of droids with the same name; during the Clone Wars, this would prove to be a huge problem for a military the size of the Galactic Republic. Using a yet (well into the future) undersigned model number would allow for more variety in droid names.

Regarding the droids with R7 and R8 designations in the clone wars, I always thought that they named that way because the Republic had more R2 units than the naming system allowed for. With naming system being the droid model followed by two numbers or letters means there can only be about 1300 unique names for any given model. My guess is that the Republic just gave a lot of droids a different designation not used by an existing model. For example R7-A7 could still be an R2 and a droid like RG-G1could just be an R4 with a different name.
@passingrando6457Ай бұрын
According to a Lucasfilm exec (I think it was Leland Chee, but don't quote me on that) the R2s, 3s, and 4s with R(higher number) designations got those numbers from their full serial number, as one might be R2-A7-P3 and it would be shortened to R7-P3 or something.

Her head would still be that of your average R6, but it would have an antenna attachment and a dish attachment. I would modify her to be able to hold 46 different hyperspace coords. She would also have a plasma torch arm, a buzzsaw arm, a scomp link (cuz every astromech needs one), and a grapling hook. The eye on her head would be modified to be hexagonal in shape. She would come equipped with those rocket boosters some astromechs have. She would have a tazer arm. She would be one of the less common female droids (don't know why they're so rare but they are). Funny how the R series kinda resembles Star Wars as a whole. Star Wars as a whole. The P2 was like script for the original films, pioneering. Before A New Hope there was a not as sucessful film, symbolong the R1. after this everything banged like the original series. The R3 was not as successful due to a lot of extra features, which weren't going to make necessarily more successful, like the prequels that were still successful, but had some features like jar jar binks. after this the R4 had some increased durability, though weren't as successful without the R2 head, just like Clone Wars on it's own due to the messed up chonology, although it had increased lenght, however in combination with the prequels you could put it into context and it was destined to skyrocket. But then came the R5, a "A meter-tall stack of the worst business decisions you could possibly want, just like the sequels...

That R1 that almost ended up in Luke hands, I wonder what amazing stories and adventures that Droid have been on since he's like many decades older than RT D2 ? It could have been on a massive high Republic battleship which Jedi did the Droid encounter? How many times was he almost blown to a million pieces !

R4 , would name it Groszek and the modification would be uploading data that would allow it to fix cars 😏 Business so good it would pay for its own maintainance 😂 coloured in neon yellow/orange and white for safety😇 And yes, I say it as in a timeline where the technology reached Earth somehow 😅

If I could only have one astromech (R-5 is an easy NO); I would go with a R-6. White body and head with red stripes. Default styled head. Jet thrusters modded onto the legs. Would be named Sureshot.

I can't pick my fave. R2 is classic, iconic, and no one can beat that. That said, an R4 for Space Redneckery or an R8 for Space Trucking would be pretty nice.

Does it bother anyone else that with the serial number for each droid in the series only being 2 characters (1 letter, 1 number) - there can only be 26x10 (260) droids of each class?? Only 2600 R class in total!

I like to think that Industrial Automaton had a deal with the Jedi Order that outfitted jedi with highly experimental prototype astromechs including very late series versions as seen with Mace Windu. These versions would later be redesigned to fit the needs they now service. I feel like business dealings like this would have been minor sources of mistrust with the general public that would begin to see the Jedi not as a religious organization but as a business making profits amidst a galactic war. It's also possible that Industrial Automaton simply saw the Jedi as the perfect group for testing their products considering their tendency to traverse the galaxy and travel to planets that have wildly varying conditions.

As much as I love r2 bb8 and the bb series completely stole the adorable sassy hilarious and brave little toaster robot side kick role for me! Doesn’t mean I’m hating on r2 though he’s the king of the droids always

Meh. I like to think Fisto had a prototype R6, explaining why he has an R6 earlier than they were supposed to exist.

I would love to have an R6 personally but I would be fine with an R5 and just upgrade him/her when ever I had time to turn them into a semi R6.

If you count from A1 to Z9, you only get 260 droids before you run out of names. How many R2 units were made?

If I had to pick one, it would have to be the R2 series. The design is iconic and influence on the Star Wars series is massive. You can't help but to think of R2-D2 if you know about the series.
