It's interesting to think that B1's seem to do a lot better as long as someone is commanding them around like an organic commander, tactical battledroid, or a super tactical battledroid. Even Grievous, who notoriously despised them, seemed to be able to get them to get their clanking together and to perform their jobs rather alright, all things considered. However, as soon as you remove the person/droid telling them what to do from the equation, the B1's just fall apart...usually quite literally. Poor droids.

I mean, that makes sense when you think about it. I forget where you see them, might be the expanded universe but I think they are shown in background clonewars scenes and possibly episode 1 or 2 but there are dedicated CIS/TF repair/salvage droids that are deployed after a battle or depending on the situation even during it who's goal is to recover damaged droids and depending on their state rebuild or salvage their parts, the whole idea is that you can recover most or at least part of your casualties simply by collecting the parts and either slapping on new or salvaged ones to get a damaged unit working or take parts from ones beyond repair for replacement hardware, it's also much darker and this I'm not sure is cannon anymore but in old lore dead or criticality wounded clones were salvaged for organs and even limbs to help heal their living brothers, the repair droids I'm pretty sure are both legends and cannon material but I don't think the recycling dismembered clone parts is still cannon as it's super dark for Disney and was only referenced once or twice in the EU

If love to see a limited run series from the perspective of the CIS via the eyes of a Droid squad, like a weird band of brothers, have it touch on complex subjects like the CIS view of the war, Droid self awareness (developing personality vs restraining bolt/programing conflicts, the other side of the coin from clones like Cutt, the bad batch and most recently Cody and to an extend crosshair), how they are seen as disposable by their organic leaders, oppressors (possibly in some cases liberators) by the local populations and possibly even have the idea of a more compassionate CIS organic officer who could have a post war spinoff with some of the cast as a sort of reflection of the bad batch post shutdown by saving some droids from the shutdown code to live in peace and then get pulled back into war bit this time they willingly want to to protect the former CIS civilians from a growing empire), another investing subject that's rarely covered are the non clone, non Droid PDFs and even non PDF forces fighting, I'm not sure if it's still cannon but in old legends lore the clone and to a lesser extent the droids were only portions of a massive Civil War that was really many smaller Civil wars in sectors and even individual worlds, would be interesting to see some early war episodes where they have the advantage of numbers, favorable predictable combat conditions against local PDFs and republic non clone forces, have some interaction with organic CIS troops as well, possibly reestablish in the lore that even post Nabo upgraded droids can still tap into a control computer to better function in combat, have things get worse as the tide turns, they loose their control ship and are forced to rely on their limited onboard Droid brains, they start fighting regular clone formations and struggle, then have a sort of inverse of the Rouge one Vader scene where they encounter a jedi general and elite clones like Windu and his 187th or Skywalker and the 501st, gradually it goes from the favorable numeric ratios to one's where its more numarucly even but more uphill battles, have some wax wane where new Droid types and tech are deployed as well as republic hardware (could have a whole episode where they encounter something like an H5/H6 juggernaut and for the first time), a tactical Droid or super tactical droid be shoehorn into the command structure between an organic commander and the OOM unit in charge that can cause friction as a aide story, could go either way, good or bad, show how as they becime less dependent on a control computer they all develop quirks and individuality in difreent ways, could have a particularly stoic and observant Droid who's thought to be malfunctioning throughout the story questioning command and how on paper it's odd why the CIS isn't steam rolling the republic with their faster production and how it almost seems that they are being held back (foreshadowing), how they view the war even, if you gave the show some really good writers and gave it a good mix of these really unique perspectives mixed with really interesting obscure lore in addition to an engaging native and story it could be a legimate masterpiece

The droid armies of the Separatists were actually tremendously cost effective overall, even factoring in the low-quality of the B1s. It's a large part of why the Empire technically outlawed the creation of any kinds of battledroids, because Palpatine knew it would be an extremely effective potential threat to the Empire if anyone was able to start pumping out battledroids in those numbers. As was typical for the Empire, this law didn't really apply to the Empire itself making combat-capable droids. They just conveniently reclassified them as "security" droids.

You forgot to mention they would recover, maintain and duplicate personality chips, intentionally keeping any data pertaining to the failure of it's previous owner (as a way to teach them from their failures) As a result, a fresh built b1's only memories were the thousands of deaths he was programmed to learn from alongside it's specialty programming. They were traumatized into their talkative nature . This is why they reacted so insanely paranoid about fighting Jedi.

You gotta feel a little bad for the B1s with all this, but this helped the Clone Wars feel important, thanks to all the personalities they have both Clones and Droids, they felt like actual people instead of mindless expendable cannon fodder, we actually cared about all these beings thanks to this so you feel sad to see them get killed thus adding gravitas and dread to the Clone Wars.

I'm pretty sure at least in the expended universe they mention how the non CC dependent units can still be connected to increase pefromance to a control computer, I'm not 100% sure its still cannon but I'm pretty sure it's kind of indirectly implied with what happened to echo, he was being used more so on the strategic level but it goes to show that the information relaying to the field is still a thing and it totally makes sense that if you have the assets if both space based and ground based prefab units that can help augment the onboard Droid brains it would probably make sense to use the capability when you have it available, it's not 100% cannon the fall of the republic mod for empire at war has a good take on this where you can deploy a control computer lucerhulk (both the auxiliary cargo model and the battle carrier versions) that in the fluff say roughly "although no longer needed, the control computer can be used to network with droids to increase performance like battle mediation (in game its limited by the mechanics to only apply to space units in the form of a buff to fighters but that's just a limit of a command unit needing to be deployed in a battle and obviously you can't deploy a lucerhulk as a ground unit) (also in the incredibly unlikely event Cory Looses (the mod dev) reads this I have a possible workaround, not sure if you can somehow hook into the planetary bonus mechanic to get this to work for ground battles, not sure if there's a way to modify the bonuses to depend on what's in orbit like with bombing runs and orbital fire support depending on what's stationed in orbit)

Like a lot of things in star wars it's inconsistent. Just like filoni sometimes shows B1s continue fighting even while heavily damaged, while other times he shows them going down barley damaged. He also sometimes has sitaitons that wouldn't be possible if the droids were all connected and other situations where it doesn't make sense that they are not connected.

Its almost like their processor and main storage get full so they rely on temporary storage like RAM which is probably primarily used to queue commands, voice lines, a quick short task. The main storage and CPU being full already from the extensive calculations of projectiles, predicting enemy movement, primary objectives etc. so in a pinch they will make battle calculations and decisions into voice lines to not forget to process them, thus saying them vocally as they process them. Like humans saying a complex thought aloud to process it or remember something by repeating it.

That begining shows alot, Obi sparing that B1. Makes you wonder if he sensed it was alive and didn't want to be there or die.
I thought the reason for them to talk that much, was that they were unable to share Data between one another without it. This was to prevent an uprising of the Battle Droids and to prevent them from creating a hive mind with oder Battle Droids. Its a safety measure for the people.

They aren't actually stupid. They legally have to have limits on intelligence, hence why on occasion they are mistaken by fans to not be sentient. This is achieved by a removable attachment, basically a far more restrictive inhibitor chip thing, we saw Rex accidently shoot one out in a comic. They are really naïve though, like children, so rex, obi and anakin tricked that droid to work for the republic and he slaughtered an entire CIS base by himself (a base which Rex, Obi and Anakin were retreating from because *they couldn't* take it!)

I feel like the B1's could've benefitted highly from a "hive mind" type of intelligence, where each droid is coordinated by centralized computers, but can operate outside of the network's range by using eachother as links, and saving a backup of their previous directive should they be separated from their network. If a central computer goes down, all it takes is a commander with access to the network to manually issue orders in the field whilst they wait for a replacement to the central computer.
@dirkbastiaandejong997 Жыл бұрын
So a decentralised intelligence network? I imagine that would be absolutely terrifying considering the number of B1s and other units on the field. Effectively thatd mean that the more B1s are on the field the more effective they become as the collective bandwidth gets higher and higher.

Corporate and political greed had wittled away most of the integrity the Republic once had. Had the Republic won the war, but in a worse state, then the CIS would've kept existing in peacetime, the galaxy permanently split apart between loyalists, and Separatists. I actually hope we get some games, movies or series that actually do this, a massive what-if scenario.

I was always confused by how the droid army had the B1's physically control every piece of hardware. It has to be cheaper to put a single droid brain into their capital ships than produce 5,000 B1's plus the reprogramming cost just to fly a ship. If their ships, tanks and other vehicles had their own brain you would also stop clones and Jedi from commandeering CIS tanks and speeders. I know that the CIS could do it with the HMP droid gunships, the ones used in the Onderon arc. I always justified it as the sith tipping the scales to let the republic win and anytime a good idea gets through, that was probably a decision someone made one their own or in secret without the CIS council/sidious knowing.
@olinseats4003 Жыл бұрын
Economy of Scale issues: The ships could have been automated and they would have functioned better, but overhauling or redesigning even a single ship is a big project, multiply that by the ridiculous size of the CIS navy and you're looking at a bank breaking amount of money. It would be cheaper and faster to slap a basic "naval skill" package into a stack of droids that you're already churning out by the millions, if not billions. and it fits with the CIS doctrine of "Cheap and good enough when fielded in high numbers"
@drakejohnson5386 Жыл бұрын
@@olinseats4003 wouldn't that economy of scales work for the more mass produced frigates, tanks and artillery pieces. What gets me is they did give droid brains to their starfighters and gunships. That inconsistency and how useful that addition would be is what confuses me.
@dungeonguy88 Жыл бұрын
@@drakejohnson5386 The important thing to remember is that Count Dooku didn't actually want the Separatist droid armies to be as effective as possible. Both Palpatine and Dooku were working to prolong the war as much as possible, making it as terrifying and brutal as possible to ensure that the Republic gave Palpatine as much power as he needed. Doing the smart, effective thing too often would have gotten in the way of that. So a massive army of merciless droids is effective for scaring the people of the Republic. Making sure they don't fight at peak efficiency helps ensure that the clonetroopers can fight back effectively and become invaluable to the Republic and the Jedi.

Did the trade federation originally use organic crew in their spacecraft? Because a lot of their equipment and vehicles look like they were originally designed for organic crews. Why have a tank with a droid crew when you could simply make the whole tank a droid? The only reason I could imagine someone designing a droid that looks humanoid is if said droid was made for working with organics such as protocol droids or if the droid was designed to use vehicles and weapons originally made for meatbags.
